Kinect Sports: Rivals developer Rare had to improvise many of the game’s control methods while Microsoft continued development of the Xbox One hardware. Despite ever-evolving features coming out of the Redmond team, Rare had no problem keeping up with advancements.

The original Kinect was “80% magical” according to Rare executive producer Danny Isaac, because it sometimes worked and sometimes couldn’t figure out “what the hell was going on”. Due to the “higher fidelity” of Kinect 2 however, Rare has been able to deal with its “unfinished business” of making a challenging, core-focused Kinect Sports game.

Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President Phil Harrison has shown a new video about Kinect 2.0, focusing on Rare’s Kinect Sport Rivals game. He stated that Kinect 2.0 will be powerful enough to understand two voices speaking at once, and read mouth movements even in the dark.

Kinect Sports Rivals uses Kinect to capture the player’s likeness, which can then be used in-game instead of an Xbox Live avatar. You probably already watched the tech demo we posted for it earlier this week, but now a new video showing OXM’s Aoife Wilson getting her face scanned and put in the game. Watch below. Kinect Sports Rivals is out in northern autumn 2014 and will be an Xbox One exclusive.

Many have been disappointed about Rare’s restriction to making Kinect games. It hasn’t bothered them, as they as they have a few ideas how to get their classic game brands onto Xbox One – and Kinect will be involved.

Fox and Microsoft have signed a coexistence agreement regarding their rival claims to the Killer Instinct trademark. Under the terms of the agreement, as uploaded by NeoGAF users, Fox promises not to raise objections to Microsoft’s trademarking of or use of the phrase. Presumably this means the TV show that started the drama won’t be renewed any time soon – but oh, harro, what’s this jaw-dropping Kinect title in the works at Rare?

George Andreas, formerly of Rare, has taken a new role as creative director of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, according to Eurogamer. Andreas was at Rare for 16 years and worked on Killer Instinct Gold, Donkey Kong 64, GoldenEye, Viva Pinata, the Banjo Kazooie series, Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero. He played an integral part in developing Kinect and was on the Kinect Sports and Kinect Sports: Season 2 teams.
