PS3 price cut brings “relief,” says Yoshida
Sony WWS boss Shuhei Yoshida’s told GI that the GamesCom-announced PS3 price cut has removed a barrier to “success” for the company’s products.
“We’re so excited about the products we’re working on for release this year, but if there was one thing that could have prevented the success of our titles we felt that would be the price point – so we’re relieved to see it finally happen,” said the exec.
Yoshida added that the addition of general economic recovery will broaden his market and allow the more casual part of PS3′s line-up to flourish.
“Games like MAG, or those hardcore games, we have no concerns over,” he said.
“But games like EyePet, or Heavy Rain, or ModNation Racers – they’re targeted to grow the audience, and it’s crucial to make the hardware more approachable to those consumers.”
Relief all round. More through there.

Some retailers already sold out of PS3 Slim

Looks like some retailers have already sold out of PS3 Slim.
According to a report from Gamespot, local GameStop and Best Buy stores in or around San Francisco started selling the console a bit early, and have subsequently ran out of the fist shipment.
Amazon still has some left though, at least in the States.
Regardless, like most console launches, the merchandise will go fast, so if you want to be able to yell “FIRST!” into your friends’ faces – you better get on it.

PS3 Slim uses half the power of old SKU
Basically, PS3 Slim uses about half the power of of the “old” machine. We know, because Crave‘s tested it. And we believe Crave. Because there’s no reason not to.
Look how green Sony is, eh? Read that article, then go and buy one. Or two. You could buy two, run them side-by-side and be ruining the environment just as much as you were before. Awesome.

Sony unveils its “It Only Does Everything” campaign for PS3

Peter Dille, senior president of marketing and PSN, has posted Sony’s new ad campaign for PS3 over on the US PS Blog.
Called, “It Only Does Everything”, the new ads are a new campaign in which Sony “will have direct conversations with consumers about everything the PS3 can do”.
From now through the holiday season, you’ll see and hear about PS3 and what it can do on TV, radio, online, retail and social networking outlets. A total of 9 TV spots will roll out throughout the holiday, each highlighting a different benefit and feature of the system.

PS3 Slim ads go live in UK – watch both now
Sony’s now posted both of the new UK PS3 TV ads on its site – watch them both here.
You will have seen one yesterday courtesy of the Guardian. The second focuses on games as opposed to the services video seen previously.
The American ads were shown in still for the first time overnight, and feature a “comedy” element. Dangerous business.

PS3 Slim unscrewed, exploded, imageised, put on the internet
Someone’s got a PS3 Slim, taken it to bits, taken pictures of the entire process and put it all on Ifixit.
That’s it. The case is full of wires, as you can see. Be sure to probably not do this to yours, assuming you’re buying one.
Thanks, rrod360lol.

Sony losing money on each PS3 Slim

Sony’s will make a loss on each PS3 Slim unit it makes, PlayStation mega-boss Kaz Hirai’s told Times Online.
“If you’re just talking about the hardware alone, the quick answer is yes,” he said.
“That makes good headlines, but I don’t actually know that that’s the true nature of the business that we’re all in, whether it’s PlayStation, Xbox or the Wii.
“I think the better indicator is to look at the business as a whole platform, to ask: are you profitable in terms of the hardware, software and peripherals. And the answer to that question is yes on a gross profit level since the last fiscal year.”
Bonanza. Slim costs £250. Thanks, Kotaku.

Watch these PS3 Slim “Playface” ads, if you dare

Sony’s new Japanese ad campaign for the PS3 Slim, called “playface,” is — bar none — the most terrifying thing we’ve ever encountered while working in the rough and tumble world of games blogging.
If this is indeed what play looks like in Japan, then we now know why Japanese people are always buried in their work.
To escape. To escape from the nefarious, pitch-black boxes that sit in their living rooms. The horror, the horror.
We’ve locked the commercials away after the break, with the hope that they may never seep forth from beyond the veil.
Why did you bestow this evil upon us, Joystiq? Why?

Why’d the PS3 Slim ditch the Spider-Man font? Kaz Hirai explains

To many, the PS3′s Spider-Man font was like that gaudy tattoo you regret getting in college; sure, it was kinda cool at one point, but you were young and foolish, and Batman is way cooler than Spider-Man.
Fortunately, while you’re covering your left shoulder in shame, Sony’s starting anew. That is to say, the PS3 Slim is Spider-Man-logo-free. So, what happened to it? Kaz Hirai explained in an interview with Times Online.
“We wanted to make sure that we set a new direction for the PS3. The PS logo with the capital P and small S has always been our logo, has always been synonymous with video games and I wanted to reset the thinking. Also internally I wanted to send the message internally that we are resetting the thinking, going back to our roots,” he said.
“What better way to do it than by resetting the logo? That puts the entire organisation on its toes. On a practical level, when you have PlayStation 3 spelt out, the aspect ratio was such that if you wanted it on a billboard it became tiny. It didn’t work in terms of visibility.”
So there you have it. Sorry Spidey, them’s the breaks.

House: PS3 price cut not down to slowing sales, Facebook for PS3 not ruled out
SCEE boss Andrew House has said to the FT that the price-cut the PlayStation 3 recieved last week in Cologne at GamesCom isn’t down to “a reaction to current market conditions”.
“We are aware that consumers are watching their euros and pounds more carefully than before and it may make a price reduction have potentially even more impact. But it would not be fair to say this is a reaction to current market conditions,” admitted House.
House also didn’t rule out a possible link-up with social website, Facebook. This comes as an Xbox 360 version of the popular socialising website, announced at E3, is due before Christmas.
“The goal is to move from a traditional short, toy-based life cycle to a longer, consumer electronics life cycle. The network allows us to give customers a better sense of value and continuous improvement.”

House: PS3 Slim won’t be in short demand
SCEE bossman Andrew House has said to MCV that, despite fears from Amazon it’ll be in short demand, the PS3 Slim won’t be receiving shortages at it’s release.
“There are trucks and trailers leaving right now – it’s on the road,” said House.
“I will make a prediction there – I don’t think we will be having too many of those [shortage] discussions with retail.”
House also claimed how “pleased” he was with how the company was holding on the PS3 Fat.
“I’m very pleased with how we have managed our inventory system on the existing model.”

We sat down and chatted with Andy House on Wednesday. Catch our full interview with him here.

Watch Minkley nick a PS3 Slim and decimate a demo pod in Cologne
What can’t Johnny Minkley do? Well, you don’t have to add burglary and destroying a PS3 demo pod to his CV of cant’s as the Eurogamer TV editor nicks the PS3 Slim and pulls apart a demo pod, all roughly within three minutes.
He does a comparison with the fat PS3 as well, abit a debug PS3, hidden in the demo pod and revealed to the not too happy SCEE PR’s.
A little Thursday morning humour for you. Go watch it here.

Rumour – Second PS3 Slim SKU being planned
It’s not even been 24 hours since SCEE’s conference ended where the PS3 Slim was announced, but already rumours are already circulating that Sony have a second 250Gb version of the console planned.
The console went through the FCC under a psydeum known as “Sand Dollar Enterprise Inc.” to make sure the SCEA report was kept a secret.
Very clever if we do say so ourselves.
When it was announced last night, only a 120Gb SKU was announced, retailing for £249/$299/€299.
Thanks Engadget and Roybott.
