SCEA has announced that it has seen a 70 percent growth in sales for PS3 when compared to October 2008, making it “the only console to experience significant growth year over year”.
According to a statement from Sony, October also marked the “highest month of revenue on record for the PlayStation Store, with downloads increasing 60 percent over October 2008.” To date, more than 650 million bits of content have been downloaded worldwide and there are more than 31 million registered users for PSN.
“Many believe a console race is a 100-meter dash, but it’s really a marathon. The PS3′s ten-year lifecycle is clear testament of Sony’s commitment to providing entertainment value to consumers,” said EEDAR’s Jesse Divnich. “PS3’s growth in recent months is a perfect example of how a new low price along with upcoming innovative, exclusive titles such as MAG, Gran Turismo 5 and God of War III, will act as large catalysts for driving the PS3′s install base even higher.
“Add in the robust offerings on the PlayStation Network and there’s no doubt that PS3′s success will continue well throughout 2010, and beyond.”
Sony received 17 nominations for the 2009 Spike Videogame Awards today which according to the company is “more than any other first or third party publisher”.

Sony has sent word that it has moved 1 million PS3′s worldwide in the past three weeks since the launch of its slimmer, less expensive models.
And with Sony announcing that the whole of Europe will have video service support by the end of 2010, that will probably help sales as well – we peeked into our very own crystal ball on that one.
“While maintaining cutting-edge features and functions, such as the ability to enjoy high quality interactive entertainment content including Blu-ray Disc games and movies as well as various content and services downloadable through PlayStation Network, the new PS3 is available at a highly attractive recommended retail price,” reads the press release.

Sony’s responded to last nights NPD results via ever-reliable SCEA senior VP of marketing, Peter Dille.
“In February, we had a tremendous kickstart to what promises to be another record year for the PlayStation brand with the launch of mega blockbuster hit Killzone 2, which ranked in the top five with only two days of sales in February and has been garnering extraordinary reviews, and a noteworthy 92 Metacritic score,” he said, apparently without taking a breath.
“We have no doubt this game will deliver a next gen experience and will be responsible for driving hardware sales throughout the year.”
He went on about what to expect for the console in the coming year.
“Expect an onslaught of unmatched entertainment offerings to hit across our platforms, such as genre-leading PS3 titles like MLB’09: The Show and inFamous, and new content via the PlayStation Network like movies and TV shows from NBC Universal, and an unprecedented line-up of third and first party exclusives to hit the PSP”, he said.
“We have no doubt 2009 will be another year of continued momentum and we remain confident in delivering the best entertainment experience to our consumers.”
Just for reference, PS3 sold 276K units, PSS 99K, and PS2 131K units in February.

“We believe Blu-ray’s victory could drive market share gains for the PS3, as we believe consumers will now be more willing to pay up (versus 360) for the standard Blu-ray player,” said William Blair analyst Ralph Shackart.
Sony US shares rose to a session high of $47.07 in early trade on the NYSE before easing to $46.30, up $1.52, or 3.4 percent from the Friday close. On Monday, markets were closed due to the President’s Day holiday.

According to this, this morning’s HD-DVD cancellation is likely to push PS3 sales up 10 percent in the short-term and lay the way clear for a heavy increase in sales this holiday, as predicted by videogaming247.
“Longer term, I think it’s a huge boon for Sony, as most retail clerks will be instructed to push Blu-ray along with sales of HD monitors at holiday, so we should see a large increase in PS3 sales year-over-year at holiday,” said Wedbush Morgan’s Michael Pachter.
Ed Barton and Richard Cooper, from Screen Digest, broadly agree: “With the format war over, and the end of the consumer indecision resulting from it, video consumers are likely to purchase the PS3 as the most cost effective, future proof Blu-ray player,” they said.
“In the longer term lower price, higher specification set-top Blu-ray players will take on the role as best entry level Blu-ray player but not within the next 12 months. This could result in a small but significant rise in the number of PS3s bought over the next 12 months as Blu-ray players.”
