Tretton says PS3 shortages are “conceivable” thanks to price cut

SCEA boss Jack Tretton has reiterated last week’s news regarding sales of PS3 climbing 300 percent thanks to the price cut.
But because of the popularity, he thinks there may end up being a shortage for the console.
“We are up about 300 percent over where we were pre-price drop,” he told Reuters. “We are up significantly versus last year.
“If things continue at this pace, it is conceivable that there will be product shortages.”
Get ‘em while they’re hot then, we reckon.

House: SCEE would “absolutely” make PS3 £199 if it were “sensible”

SCEE president, Andrew House, has said that Sony would like to knock down the price of PS3 to the same £199 price point PS2 saw during its peak last generation.
However, that is providing the decision to lower the cost that much was within the boundaries of “sensible business”.
“If we could get to a more aggressive price point within the boundaries of sensible business, absolutely would we wish to do that? Yes, we would,” he told VG247 exclusively during GamesCom.
“We have to deal with an exchange regiment that is-what-it-is right now, and not something that we are obviously in control of. I also think, as well, that that we have – let’s not forget – a great line-up of content coming for PS3 this year that I think will be very motivating and I think what we are also trying to do – we spent a lot of time yesterday very deliberately talking about the network – talking about what we are doing to improve, refresh, and add more capabilities to the network.”
As far as making a splash during this holiday season, House believes with the recent announcement of the movies on demand service along with the size of PSN, Sony is in good shape.
“What I hope is starting to become very apparent with PS3, is that the network has a larger community that you can engage with because there are more services, more things that you can do – access to movies now coming in November – and we are adding value to the existing PS3 owner as well.
“I think, will put us in reasonably good shape for this holiday.”

Tecmo Koei: “We would welcome a price cut for PS3″

Tecmo Koei CEO Kenji Matsubara, has said that during meeting with Sony, he requested a price cut for PS3.
“Whenever I discuss this with Sony reps I always ask them: ‘Please cut the price’, but I don’t have a clear view on Sony’s situation,” Matsubara told CVG. “Yes, from a publisher’s point of view we would welcome a price cut for PS3, and we are waiting, definitely.
“It’s definitely a way of boosting the PS3 market, but it’s Sony’s strategy and I don’t know their cost structure. Sony introduced cutting-edge technology in the PS3, that’s why people in the industry accept that the PS3 cost is so high, but we’d welcome a price cut.”
So would the rest of the world, apparently.

More price cut rumors: PS3 and Xbox 360 both getting cheaper by fall

A source close to Ars Technica says that PS3 and Xbox 360 will both get a price cut by fall.
Yes, more “price cut” talk.
The “mole” says that the 80Gb PS3 will become scarce, and thanks to the bundles being offered by Sony, this could happen within two moths time. The Slim will come out in the fall with the price drop and 160Gb models of PS3 will also become scarce — all part of Sony’s diabolical plan no doubt (insert evil laugh).
As far as Xbox 360 is concerned, Microsoft will phase out the Pro making Elite the standard. Another bundle is expected just in time for the holiday shopping extravaganza to replace the Elite, but the source failed to elaborate on what the SKU actually was.
Like you would with most rumors, take out of this what you will.

A PS3 price cut would “really boost the industry,” says analyst

Billy Pidgeon, an independent analyst at Game Changer Research, reckons the gaming industry in general would benefit from Sony slashing PlayStation’s price.
“The thing that would really boost the industry in this traditionally slow period would be a Sony price cut. That would really help right now,” he said.
The quote is part of a Reuters article that looks at E3, the various financial aspects of the industry as it stands today and it’s potential economic future.
“If it doesn’t happen, I don’t think the industry is in for rough times,” Pidgeon added. “I do see that, in the fourth quarter, there will be a return to form.”

Analyst: Sony could cut PS3 price by $100 as early as late summer

Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian says that the PS3 could get a $100 price cut between E3 and the end summer.
Putting the console at $299 would not only be good for business, but the purse strings as well. Anything less “would likely be perceived negatively by the market,” Sebastian told Gamasutra.
“In addition to a $100 price reduction, which would put the PS3 in easier reach of a mass market audience, we note that Sony has a healthy lineup of upcoming first-party video games planned over the next year, including inFAMOUS, God of War III, Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2 and Gran Turismo 5,” said Sebastian.
“For Sony PlayStation, we believe the next 12 months are critical to regain market share, particularly with Nintendo losing some momentum near- term, and with Microsoft likely introducing a new gesture-based user interface.”
