The latest PlayStation 3 firmware update, 4.40, has an inetresting feature that will not go live until May – it will allow you to kick off content downloads on your PlayStation 3 from the SEN web store. Otherwise, it adds PS2 Classic support for first-party headsets and addresses some stability issues.

Sony will issue a new system software update for PlayStation 3 on Thursday October 23, bringing the firmware to version 4.30. As briefly mentioned on the PS Blog, the update will any trophies you’ve earned through Vita games to the collection displayed on your PS3. No other changes have been announced.

Sony has announced an optional PlayStation 3 firmware update will roll out over the next few hours. Update 4.11 has not been detailed beyond a comment that it “improves certain aspects of system software”. The update is not required for continued access to the PlayStation Network, if you’d prefer to hold off.

A new PlayStation 3 firmware update has slipped in under the twin cover of night and a bombshell E3 presser.

Firmware v3.65 reportedly addresses a few stability issues pertaining to specific titles, and fiddles with the save data utility for PS Minis.

The non-mandatory update won’t be downloaded automatically; you can opt-in by visiting the system update section of the console’s XMB.

Sony has now confirmed through its US blog that high definition master audio support – DTS-HD MA – will be included in next week’s PS3 Firmware update.

“I have more good news to report today – the system software update will also add DTS-HD Master Audio output for Blu-ray videos, which means the high-definition visuals of Blu-ray will now be matched with the highest quality audio for the ultimate movie-watching experience on PS3,” said a spokesperson.

“DTS-HD Master Audio is literally bit-for-bit identical to the studio master recording and makes movie soundtracks and sound effects truly come to life. The technology delivers audio at the incredibly high rate of 24.5 mega-bits per second (Mbps) on Blu-ray disc, which is significantly higher than standard DVDs. DTS-HD Master Audio also offers 7.1 audio channels at 96k sampling frequency/24 bit depths, so you’ll be totally immersed in the sound. The firmware update will add DTS-HD High Resolution Audio as well, which is a similar output technology that requires less disc space.”

According to engadgetHD, AV Watch recently interviewed some PS3 firmware engineers who confirmed that DTS-HD MA support is to be included in a future update.

Sony has recently added the BD-Live feature, so the inclusion of DTS-HD MA support will bring PS3′s Blu-ray player up to spec with the top of the line competition.

A release date for this inclusion has not been disclosed. However, for those firmware fans out there, not long now until the PS Store update arrives.
