A patent filed by Sony in late 2011 for a “User-Drive Three Dimensional Interactive Gaming Environment” has surfaced, and the device appears to be an updated version of PS Eye.

During the Q&A session following John Smedley’s keynote at GDC Austin, the SOE president informed attendees that Free Realms should land on PS3 sometime during the middle of 2010 and may also support the PS Eye.
“It’s next year sometime, toward the middle of the year,” he said. “For the PlayStation 3 version, it’s very likely that the Eye is going to be something we support.”

Sony has announced that EyePet will land in the US November 17 for $39.99 or bundled with PlayStation Eye for $59.99.
Be prepared for your “real” pets to freak out.
Apparently, the little guy is customizable, “letting you modify fur length, color and pattern, as well as the ability to outfit your pet with more than 250 unique collectible items”, according to the US PS Blog.

In case you missed it in the PS motion tech keynote liveblog from Develop yesterday, Sony confirmed that PS Eye can already recognise faces.
The SCEE research and development guys said the peripheral is capable of detecting the “position and direction” of your head, the “gender and age of face” and smiles.
It can also detect different parts of the face, such as nose, mouth and eyes.
The camera was shown being used with the company’s motion tech in the Brighton session yesterday, although the demo was the same stuff shown at E3.
