Level 5 boss Akihiro Hino has confirmed in a tweet that the first Professor Layton title, The Curious Village, has sold 1 million units in Japan since its launch in 2007 for DS. The series has now shipped 11 million units worldwide. Three more titles in the series launched on DS, with the fifth in the series, The Mask of Miracle, appearing on 3DS. Hino also confirmed a sixth title was in development, but didn’t state which platform it was for.

ELSPA’s announced that Wii Sports Resort and Professor Layton and the Curious Village were the top-selling Wii and DS games, respectively, last year in the UK.

NPD has revealed that Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box sold 67,500 units in the US during its seven days of availability for the month of August.

According to Gamasutra, the first Layton game, The Curious Village, was the top-selling DS game in the US during its first three weeks of availability. The September NPD figures should reveal more on just how well the game has sold, come October.

Three games in the series have been released so far in Japan, and a fourth one is in the works.

According to MCV, Level 5′s confirmed that the sequel to much-loved DS puzzler Professor Layton and the Curious Village – Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box – will be heading west within the next six months.

The third part of the series will reach us next year, apparently.

Lisa Kudrow has already been seen in DS TV spots for Cooking Mama, so the fact she’s now appearing in one for Professor Layton and the Curious Village is no real shock.

She seems rather bossy in it. We feel a bit bad for her friend.

According to the latest issue of Famitsu, not only is the Professor Layton and the Eternal Songstress movie scheduled for a 2010 release in Japan, but Level-5 will be releasing a new Layton DS trilogy to go along with it.

The first offering, Professor Layton and the Devil’s Flute, is set three years before the Curious Village took place.

Our hero is in a strange town besieged by a giant who goes bonkers whenever a mysterious flute is played. Layton’s trusty sidekick Luke is present, as well as a new female pal named Remi Altava.

“The series wrapped up its trilogy with Professor Layton and the Last Time Travel, so there was a bit of resistance to making yet another new title,” Level-5′s Akihiro Hino told Famitsu.

“However, we received word from a lot of gamers during development asking if this was really the end, and that was all the inspiration we needed to create a new trilogy, a ‘second season’ of Layton.”

“With this trilogy, we’ve got puzzles and tricks that go across all three games”, he added. “I think each individual game is going to take a lot more time to complete than before. We’re challenging ourselves here because we don’t want people to think it’s the same thing over again.”

Devil’s Flute is slated for a fall release in Japan, with the Eternal Songstress film continuing where Devil’s Flute leaves off.

According to 15,000 reports this morning, Professor Layton and Curious Village will release in Europe on November 7.

The DS puzzle-thriller thing’s been out in the US and Japan for ages, but there we are.

Of course it did. Open world death game set in the African outback assumes narrative cues from odd DS puzzle thing. Stands to reason.

“You see the blocks of text there,” Far Cry 2 narrative designer Patrick Redding said, pointing at the screen during a demo of the game at Games Convention last week.

“We kind of took a page from Professor Layton’s game on DS, to give the player a recap in text of what he’s been up to up to this point.”

The text aspect of Far Cry 2 isn’t finished yet, however, as Redding explained.

“You’ll notice these weird kind of weird little text strings that seem a bit broken,” he said. “That’s just because they’re not hooked up to the final text database.

“We talk a lot about the fact that our game’s story is dynamic, that we assemble the narrative on the fly, so what we’re doing is slotting in the names of characters the player has interacted with – like the different factions that he’s dealt with – and we dynamically update those text blocks in order to give him a description up to this point.”

Nintendo should charge Ubi Montreal, or something. Blatant theft.

A sequel to Professor Layton and the Curious Village has apparently been confirmed for US relief by the DS game’s manual, says this. The title released in America yesterday. As far as we know, this is down for a European launch, but no date’s been fixed as yet.
