Analyst: Wii already overdue for another price drop

wii

Seems like only yesterday we were scanning Toys ‘R’ Us fliers and picking away furiously at Nintendo’s buttoned lips over a potential Wii price drop. Then – shock – it happened.

But that’s not good enough for Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey. He thinks that, with Natal and Arc on the way, Nintendo needs stop treading water before its end of the pool gets a little more crowded.

Sony: Cheap PS2 could take Wii market share

ps2a

SCEA marketing boss John Koller’s told GameDaily he believes his newly-cheapened PS2 could crash Wii’s American party.

“We do think the $99 price point could steal some share [from Wii],” he said.

“From a technological standpoint, the Wii is much closer to the PS2 than it is to the next-gen consoles. It’s obviously not an HD box and the software development is on a par with where PS2 development is, so that’s a much more realistic and similar demographic.”

Sony made its “big” announcement regarding the ancient machine yesterday, dropping its price to $99 in the US and €99 in mainland Europe.

“We feel very confident that the $99 price level will allow us to grab our share [of the young and female audience],” Koller added.

PS2 is available at the new price point today.

SCEE’s just confirmed to VG247 that the UK will not see a PS2 price cut, despite the fact the machine has just dropped to $99 in the US.

PS2 will now cost €99 in Europe, SCEE said today.

“The price of PS2 is not being reduced in the UK,” said a rep.

“For the rest of Europe it has been dropped to €99.”

UK PStwo bundles go from £100 on GAME.

SCEA’s said today that the machine will go on sale at $99 in the US as of tomorrow.

Apparently it comes from next week’s Target catalogue.

Sony is planning to make some kind of large announcement today, apparently. We shall see.

NA Xbox 360 price drop does sorta OK, raises sales 100%

Kotaku recently received word that Microsoft is slightly pleased with the natural sales enhancement its console received following its recent batch of US price drops.

“Coming off the heels of the console price drop last week, Microsoft Xbox 360 sales have surged, with retailers reporting over 100% sales lift for all Xbox 360 models compared to the previous weekend,” reads the statement.

“Additionally, retailers are reporting that between Friday, Sept. 5 and Sunday, Sept. 7, some Xbox 360 models were selling at six times the rate they were the weekend prior.”

Pretty impressive. Shame Microsoft can’t pull the price drop shtick every week.

Microsoft brands imminent Xbox 360 price drop as “rumour”

Never saw this coming. Speaking to VG247, Microsoft UK called overnight claims that the European entry level Xbox 360 will drop in price next week “rumour and speculation”. And as you all know by now, ““We don’t comment on rumour or speculation,” the firm said.

The story originated on a Dutch site, which claimed Microsoft Europe was readying to drop the price of the Xbox 360 Core pack to €199, making it €50 cheaper than the European Wii.
