The Academy of Interactive Arts and Science has announced Gabe Newell will be the 17th inductee into the AIAS Hall of Fame. Valve’s co-founder and president will also headline the D.I.C.E. 2013 Summit stage as Thursday conference keynote speaker.

Steam for Schools initiative announced, educators given Portal 2 for class purposes
During the Games for Change conference, Valve announced it will give away Portal 2 for free, via the new Steam for Schools initiative. Educators which sign up for the beta which also recoeve the Perpetual Testing Initiative level maker so students can create Portal levels in the classroom – but they won’t be able to share said levels outside of class. Perpetual Testing Initiative now available for Portal 2
Valve has announced the free Portal 2 update, Perpetual Testing Initiative, is now available on PC and Mac. The DLC allows players to “easily create, share, and play Portal 2 puzzles,” via the in-game Puzzle Maker. Log into Steam and get to downloading.

Portal 2 sells 4 million units combined on PC and console
Valve has announced Portal 2 has sold over 4 million copies combined on PC and console since it was released a year ago. The figure was provided to Neogamr by level designer David Sawyer. The entire franchise has now sold over 8 million total, with the original Portal game selling over 4 million units – a figured which doesn’t take into account Steam sales. Thanks, Gamasutra.

Video preview demonstrates in-game editor for Portal 2
A video preview of the Perpetual Testing Initiative DLC for Portal 2 has been released by Steam user Doogiehoogie. It’s posted below. The DLC allows users to create, share, and play Portal 2 puzzles using the puzzle maker. Users can then publish maps to the Steam Workshop so that others can browse, vote on, and select to play them. Selected puzzles will automatically be downloaded and installed inside Portal 2. It releases on PC and Mac May 8.

In-game map editor releasing for Portal 2 in 2012
Valve has announced the second game add-on Portal 2 is in development and targeted for release early next year. The update includes an “easy-to-use,” in-game map editor so you can design, build and share single-player and co-op test chambers. The community will be able to view, play and vote on your creations with “a simple click.” The development of the editor was mentioned earlier this week with the release of part two of the Final Hours of Portal 2 app, but was unconfirmed at the time. Portal 2′s first content update, Peer Review, was released two weeks ago.

Valve and Dark Horse team up for Steam-Powered Stories hardcover comic collection
Valve and Dark Horse have announced a hardcover collection of comics based on the worlds of Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress, and Portal. The comic, which contains over two hundred pages of story, is titled: Valve Presents: The Sacrifice and other Steam-Powered Stories, and is to be made available on November 16. Portal goes free on Steam until Tuesday – get it now
Valve’s made the original Portal free to get from Steam on PC and Mac, but only from now until Tuesday. If you don’t already have the game, get to it here. You’d be very, very silly if you don’t, although that begs an entirely different question: why don’t you have it in the first place?

Square Enix is soon to announce the latest title from Portal co-creator and former Valve designer Kim Swift, with an official unveiling planned for PAX Prime which takes place this weekend.

First Portal 2 DLC expected in mid-September
Valve’s Portal 2 DLC is still heading your way this summer, and according to spokesman Doug Lombardi, it will be released sometime in mid-September. No further information was revealed about the content, but we’ve previously been told by the firm it will contain new test chambers, new challenge modes, and other nice nuggets for Mac, PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. Mega Valve comic book to be published in November
A 300-page strong Valve comic book will get a release in the US this coming autumn. On November 3, for $30, Dark Horse Comics will launch Valve Presents: The Sacrifice and other Steam-Powered Stories, a book based on comics penned on Team Fortress 2, Portal and Left 4 Dead, the latter’s Sacrifice will be the main comic of the lot.
