Mass Effect 2: We won’t “shy away” from controversial moments, says BioWare

Good news, alien sex fans. Remember the “porn” scene from Mass Effect? The one pop psychologist Cooper Lawrence claimed contained “graphic” shagging? The one that actually didn’t?
BioWare’s promising more “emotionally engaging moments” for Mass Effect 2. We know because Steph asked BioWare co-founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk at GDC.
VG247: Anything controversial this time? In the same regard as the…
Greg: The big over-reaction?
Ray: We don’t shy away from emotionally engaging moments. We try to make them contextually appropriate. They’re not gratuitous for the sake of gratuity. We put them in to actually drive an emotional response, but the journey you’ve gone through to get to that point in the game, it has to feel like that is a real point, a real outcome that makes sense to the player to get that point. They’re not there for shock value.
If there’s surprise and delight in the emotionally engaging moment then that’s great too, but they have to feel contextually appropriate. We just make games with great stories and characters and, just like in real life, some of the interactions are emotionally charged between some of the characters. There could be all types of different emotions. And even the experience itself, we strive for emotion… We’re not shying away from it.
So there you go. Mass Effect releases in early 2010.

Wright praises “amazingly explicit” Sporn
Speaking to the AP, Will Wright has done the right thing and said all the Spore Creature porn’s creative. Good, even.
“When you give players creative control, you have to expect they’re going to do the unexpected,” he said.
“Some of it’s really good for what they were shooting for. It’s amazingly explicit, especially when those creations are animated. We just have to make sure those people aren’t messing up the experience for others.”
More through there. Spore’s out next week, almost unbelievably.

According to this News.com.au piece, games are now the most popular subject for searches on Google in Australia, beating out pornography for the first time.

Heavy Rain dev says Uncharted is like porn
Speaking to Gama, Heavy Rain developer and Quantic Dream founder David Cage has likened the narrative structure of Naughty Dog’s Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune to that of porn.
“I thought Uncharted was very interesting,” he said. “There was some very, very interesting aspects to it. The big difference between Uncharted and what we’re doing here is that Uncharted was still structured like a video game. It gives you a bit of story, then action, then a bit of story, then action – like porn movies, when you think about it.
“Porn movies are structured in exactly the same way, except that the action is not the same (laughter), but it’s the same structure. Most video games are done like that.”
More through there. It’s a bit late for stuff like this.

Japanese erotic games industry suffering from Blueprint-syndrome
According to this, Japan’s erotic games industry’s getting in the ass, so to speak, from bedroom coders who can create sex games on virtually no budget but still make enough money to survive. Apparently, a large number of the big “eroge” industry games companies have been laying off staff to compete with the l33t underground porn ninjas. Worth a read.
