Report: Sony working on PlayStation-branded Android phone

Ever felt the need to tell your grandmother who lives in the middle of nowhere about the pious, upstanding life you’ve been leading while also slaying/doing the nasty with the entire Greek pantheon on the same device?
Well, that’s kind of weird. But soon, you’ll be able to.

PS3 firmware update 3.40 stealthily adds Move support

Did you know that Sony can remotely add things to your PS3 and not tell you about it? Wild, huh? We’d be outraged, but we probably should’ve actually read those terms of service we agreed to when we signed-up for PSN. Our bad.
This time, it’s just what looks to be the foundation for Move support. But next time? Well, our memory’s a bit hazy, but we’re pretty sure this is how the Terminator movie franchise started.

PSone is 15 years old today
PSone celebrates its fifteenth birthday today, as detailed by this splendid SCEJ page.
The machine launches on December 3, 1994 in Japan, and went on to sell over 125 million units.
It took almost a year to get out of Japan, launching in the US on September 9, 2005 and Europe on September 29 in the same year.
What’s left to say? A beast. A boxy, grey beast. Little life-changing man: we salute you.
Thanks, Blerk.

“We work with experts in a number of fields to minimise the environmental impact of our operations and believe the Electronic Waste Company is able to meet our high standards.”
Tres vert. Press release after the link.

45nm Cell to reduce power consumption by 40%
According to Tom’s Hardware, “Sony is apparently working on a 65 nm to 45 nm migration of its Cell Broadband Engine. Sony claims that the chip area size will be reduced by 34% and the 45 nm Cell will consume 40% less power than the 65 nm generation. The company also works on improving the design for manufacturability (DFM) for Cell to simplify the CPU production process.”
The Cell processor, obviously, powers PS3, although quite what a 40% reducrion in energy consumption would mean for the machine, apart from being good for the environment and you console not getting so hot, isn’t clear. Someone will tell us soon enough, we’re sure.

Someone bothers to call Sony about new PS3 SKU
SCEE has dismissed talk of a 120-160Gb PS3 as “rumour and speculation” following this morning’s… rumour and speculation. CVG gets brownie points for working out how to operate buttons on a telephone. The story started in reaction to last week’s assumptions that Sony’s dumping the 80Gb SKU in America.
