Planetside 2 will launch “on or before December 31,” SOE has announced. The date was included in the fine print of a members package called Alpha Squad. The package will run you $39.99 / £29.99 and comes with beat access and 4000 Station Cash. At launch, those who purchased it will also get to choose between three camo sets based on the three factions. Sony Online Entertainment boss John Smedley has confirmed on Twitter that Planetside 2 will have an Australian server. Smedley’s comment that SOE will “bite the bullet and put a server down there” suggests the server will actually be located in Australia, not just a dedicated virtual destination, meaning the shooter MMO won’t suffer the enormous lag spikes normally experienced by antipodean gamers connecting to US and especially European servers. Planetside 2 is in closed beta test and expected to be live before the end of the year.
