Moore in FIFA Japan score “delight”
EA Sports boss Peter Moore’s expressed “delight” at FIFA 10 hitting the Japanese charts on launch, writing on his blog.
“Imagine my delight to see Famitsu award the game a platinum rating (36/40), a score only enjoyed by the cream of the crop of games released in Japan,” he said.
“That score obviously caught soccer gamers eyes over there, as the game debuted in the top 10 this week, much to our delight.”
Mr Moore’s not resting on his laurels, though.
“It is clear we still have work to do in Japan to more fully understand what drives that gamers attraction to sports titles,” he added.
“Let me be clear on this. I recognize that there are many factors that contribute to a gamer’s decision to purchase (or not) a particular game, I’d just hate for the gamers in Japan to not get as much enjoyment as the rest of the world out of the best sports game of this console generation.”
Moore through there.

Moore: Games industry “at least a decade away from saying goodbye to physical disc”

Speaking at the PLAY conference this past weekend at UC Berkeley in California, EA Sports boss Peter Moore said the games industry is going to be using physical media for a good while yet.
“[The industry is] at least a decade away from saying goodbye to a physical disc. The more important question is what does the next generation of console look like,” he said.
Moore went on to say that Microsoft will probably be the one making the first move on the next generation.

FIFA 10 sells 1.7 million Euro copies in week one
FIFA 10 is the fastest selling sports game of all time and EA’s biggest ever European launch, the publisher said this morning, with 1.7 million Euro units sold in just one week.
Mr Moore, understandably, is quite pleased.
“We were confident that FIFA 10 would be a hit, and this week fans across Europe have shown just how much they love this game,” he said.
“We are incredibly proud of FIFA 10 and this kick-off for great, authentic football competition.”
More than 10 million gaming sessions have now been played online, with over 155,000 gamers playing online simultaneously during peak playing hours.
FIFA was branded the second biggest UK launch of all time on Monday, only being bested by GTA IV.
The game launches in the US on October 20.

Moore – 360 and PS3 Grand Slam Tennis will be released, will use motion tech
EA Sports is still planning on releasing 360 and PS3 versions of Grand Slam Tennis, division boss Peter Moore’s told VG247, but only when motion controllers have launched for both systems.
Moore delayed the games in August following the release of a MotionPlus-compatible Wii version.
“You will do on the new motion technologies,” Moore said when asked if we’ll see the 360 and PS3 SKUs actually make it to market.
“One thing that becamse glaringly obvious is that once you started playing Wii MotionPlus tennis and then you go back to [traditional controllers].”
Moore added that MotionPlus had “ruined” tennis games on standard controllers for him, but reiterated that the success of EA Sports Active had been an equal part of the decision to slip.
“It’s two things,” he said. “Active is such a powerful platform that we have to bring in resources to take advantage of that and get more stuff coming down the pipe.
“Secondly we’ve decided just to wait for Natal and for the Sony motion controller to come out.”
Natal is expected late next year, while Sony’s motion tech should release next spring.
Moore was speaking at GamesCom in Cologne.

“No plans” for more EA NASCAR, says Moore
Sounds as though any aspiration EA may have had to make more NASCAR games has gone south.
“There are no plans right now for NASCAR from EA,” EA Sports boss Peter Moore told Gamespot.
“We had a great relationship over the years that I thoroughly enjoyed when I first got here. Unfortunately…we had to make some tough trade-offs.
“We’ve had to redeploy some of those folks. A number of the NASCAR team has moved over now to EA Sports MMA, which will be shipping next year. [We're] still a huge fan of NASCAR, but no plans right now to develop any further games for NASCAR from EA Sports.”
Moore’s comments represent a shift in position from April this year, when he told VG247 that “NASCAR and ourselves are in negotiations about where we go from here.”
Clearly not any more.

Analyst: Profitability hasn’t grown for Western developers

At the Edinburgh Interactive Conference, BMO Capital Markets’ Edward Williams told attendees that the gaming market has suffered “significant disruption” to its business model.
“For Western publishers, profitability hasn’t grown at all in the past few years and that’s before we take 2009 into account,” he said while stating that the opposite could be claimed from the Chinese sector.
Chinese firms were seeing improved profits due to the PC market and direct download methods rather than the traditional way used by Western firms releasing titles on DVD per retail outlets. Developers in China also do not have to pay as much in royalties to console makers because of the low number of console users.
Three factors, Williams explained, are causing the Western games market to decline:
- Games are getting larger, which meant longer development time and larger staff costs.
- In the 1990s the PlayStation accounted for 80% of the market, today the console space is very fragmented, so developers have to work on many platforms at any one time.
- The cost of licensing intellectual property or gaining official sports body endorsement (such as FIFA or FIA) has gone up.
Speaking to the BBC, Peter Moore agreed that while there’s a difference in the markets, Westerner will start warming up to digital distribution soon.
“In China, PC and mobile platforms will continue to dominate,” he said. “There isn’t the necessity to buy other pieces of hardware and it is our job to service that. In Europe we are going to see more content that’s delivered electronically, be that through Steam, Xbox Live or whatever.”
“The release of Tiger Woods online as a free to play experience will be the real test of the Western consumer’s appetite for digital downloading.”

Peter Moore discusses how EA Sports learned to cater to women

Peter Moore gave a keynote this morning at the Edinburgh Interactive Conference and discussed how EA Sports learned how to reinvent itself to women and embrace Nintendo’s Wii.
“The only time our testosterone-fuelled business talked to women was about games for their boyfriends, sons or fathers,” said Moore.
“The Wii came along and the dynamics changed. The audience changed radically – no longer interested in passive sitting down, it became more about getting up off the couch. We knew that if this is where the business was going, we were going to lag behind unless we changed our business model.
“Probably the most stark example of success on the Wii is the rise of health and wellness. We are EA Sports, where do we come in on this? We did $150m business in the first year in our case by talking to the female consumer and providing a solution to someone who perhaps can’t get to a gym, or afford one, through EA Sports active.
“It’s not only great business for the company but we are changing people’s lives through a game, and actually, it’s not just a game it’s an experience. It kicks your ass. We are delighted we are talking to girls, we are talking to women.”

Madden 10 pre-orders up on last year
EA Sports boss Peter Moore said last night that pre-orders for Madden’s 2010 version were ahead of those the firm saw for the franchise in 2008.
“We’re now marginally ahead year-on-year with about ten days to go,” said Moore, speaking in EA’s Q1 investor call.
“Last year on this call we talked about pre-sales and whether they were really a key indicator anymore for what the strength of the title is going to be out of the blocks… but we’re marginally ahead.”
Moore didn’t give specific figures. The game releases on August 14.
For all the major headlines from the call and all related figures, hit this.

Peter Moore has posted a developer diary of sorts over on the US PS Blog.
In it, he discusses the success EA has been having with its sports titles and how the company plans to support these titles via PS3.
