Star Trek: The Video game launches in April, and license-holder Paramount has stressed that it won’t be another shoddy cash-in. The company has said it learned a great deal from previous licensed disasters.

Paramount has secured a pair of new trademarks for World War Z – the usual two-hit combo of “downloadable electronic game programs; electronic game software for handheld electronic devices; video game cartridges and discs” and “entertainment services, namely, providing online electronic games”. It may be just a protective measure or it may indicate we’ll see a licensed tie-in when the film arrives in June 2013. World War Z, for those under rocks, is based on a post-apocalyptic novel by Max Brooks, the follow up to The Zombie Survival Guide.

Deadline has reported that Paramount is in talks regarding a film version of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, although when asked, the studio declined comment. According to the report, Ubisoft “will be very involved and retain control over how the game is translated into a film.” Earlier reports indicated Warner was a front runner, but it appears Paramount is the safe bet. And we’re off. Sony just announced that 20th Century Fox, Disney, Paramount, Sony Pictures (dur), Universal and Warner Bros. are now all signed to delivery HD movies for the US PSN.

EA’s games label president has told the LA Times that the Godfather franchise is finished as far as the publisher is concerned.

“We’re not going to do another one,” said Frank Gibeau. “The bloom is really off the rose for licensed games.”

In response, the PR team at EA quickly contacted the newspaper and clarified that while there are no Godfather games on the schedule for the next three years, nothing is set in stone.

“We do not currently have a Godfather game in development,” said the rep. “Nothing has been decided as to future sequels. Paramount is a great partner.”

EA has handed over major licenses that were previous developed by the company including James Bond and The Lord of the Rings with Harry Potter and Jason Bourne the only ones being kept.

Godfather II has sold 241,000 units in the US since it’s April release.

The lawsuit between the estate of Mario Puzo and Paramount over 2006 action crime game The Godfather has been settled out of court for an undisclosed sum.

Puzo’s estate – the author passed away ten years ago – was trying to get Paramount to fork over $1 million in sales and rental revenue.

“We think it’s a terrific settlement,” said Bert Fields, the lawyer for the Puzo estate, Bert Fields. “This involved one of the most admired films of all time.”

Film studio Paramount is getting into games, if this is to be believed.

“Broadly speaking, it’s exciting to work for a company that has a portfolio that crosses film, interactive entertainment and online – and that’s a strength of position that [Paramount parent] Viacom certainly holds,” said Paramount Digital’s general manager of worldwide distribution, Alex Carloss. “Paramount is very, very excited about the growth in the interactive entertainment market. I’m sure you’re going to see an awful lot more from Paramount in this space.”

Paramount currently licenses its properties to established games publishers such as Activision, Ubisoft, EA and Sierra.

Download-to-rent films will cost from 250 Microsoft Points (£2) for SD movies and from 380 Microsoft Points (£3.20) for HD movies.
