Tomb Raider reboot concepts are rumor no more

laracroftrumor1

According to a post on Kotaku, those leaked Tomb Raider concept images were real.

An attorney from Nielsen contacted Kotaku asking the site to remove its cache of Tomb Raider propaganda, while an attorney with Crystal Dynamics apparently did the same to Four Player Co-Op, the source of the pictures. The photos were leaked without Crystal Dynamics’ permission, so the story goes.

Granted, as Kotaku points out, just because the images and accompanying info are real, that doesn’t mean this particular Lara Croft face lift will ever see the light of day. Still though, we know something now, at least, and knowing is half the battle.

Nielsen study says gaming hours, used game purchases up

nielsenhours1

A new study conducted by research firm Nielsen found that gamers have recently started spending more time gaming, more money purchasing used games, and less purchasing new games. The study attributes much of this behavior to the current Rough Economic Climate.

In January 2009, gamers spent an average of 19 hours per week basking in the glow of their favorite games, compared to only 16.5 hours in January of 2008. May 2009, the study’s most recent month, saw gamers log 16.5 hours into their favorite hobby, while the corresponding month in 2008 saw less than 16.

Interestingly, Nielsen doesn’t believe hardcore gamers have had any significant impact on the study, attributing most of the upswing to “mainstream gamers.”

“Primarily, we believe mainstream gamers are playing more of the broadly appealing games (i.e Wii Fit, Guitar Hero and Rock Band) pushing their hours of gameplay up,” director of client consulting Michael Flamberg said.

Used game purchasing is also climbing more quickly than expected, reaching an all time high ratio of 0.36 in May 2009. This, of course, means that new game purchases are down, though Nielsen says that could be a result of a lack of “huge hits” at this point in the year. 2008 was already quite bountiful at this point, bringing forth both Mario Kart Wii and GTA IV.

Nielsen issues correction on Wii being the least used console

wii5

Nielsen has issued a correction regarding a report that said Wii is the least-used console.

As told to FastCompany, the study was mislabeled, and the correct percentages of user minutes for average sessions are:

  • PS2 – 23.7
  • Wii -20.7
  • Xbox 360 -18.2
  • PS3 – 9.0
  • Xbox -7.9
  • GameCube -3.3

However, Nielsen stands by data that claimed Wii is used less often than PS3 and Xbox 360.

[UPDATE] Women make up 46.2% of PC gaming, says Nielsen report

womengamers03

According to a new Nielsen report, the largest demographic in PC gaming is women aged 25 and upwards.

The group accounted for 46.2 percent of all players and 54.6 percent of all gameplay minutes in December 2008.

The most played games on PC are card games from Microsoft, with Solitaire averaging over 17 million players during the month.

Apparently, hardcore games are not a favorite amongst the majority of females, then.

Shame that.

[UPDATE] Looks like Nielsen polled World of Warcraft players for the same report and found that over 428,621 are female. Now we feel bad for making a bit of fun at their expense earlier. Thanks, Shack.

Wii is least-used home console

wii3

More shocks from the world of Wii today, as a Nielsen report has shown that Wii is the least used of the three current generation consoles.

Wii had an average usage of five days in December last year, compared to 6.8 for the PlayStation 3 and 7.1 days for the Xbox 360, according to the Nielsen’s State of the Video Gamer paper.

The average usage session was 58 minutes for Wii, while PS3 was played for 64 minutes on average. Xbox 360 was most-played, at a general 78 minutes stretch.

Edge showed last night that Wii has by far the worst games of any of the home consoles, judged by review score.
