Half-Life 2 Black Mesa mod will not be released in 2009

The Black Mesa mod for Half-Life 2 will not make it’s projected 2009 release, according to a post on the mod’s official forums.
“Unfortunately, to our great disappointment, Black Mesa will not make a 2009 release,” wrote the mod’s project lead. “Cynics may now rejoice, bets may be collected, and I think a mod team member has to eat his shoe, but we hope our loyal fans will forgive us and realize that the delay will translate into a better final product that’s (hopefully) more easily available to everyone.
“Once again we apologize for what has to be very disappointing news. We placed a 2009 deadline on ourselves to motivate us and bring this 6 year project to a close. And while we didn’t quite make it, we have come very close, and you can expect a complete, polished game to hit your hard drives in the near future. We’ll be sure and update if anything changes.
“Until then, hang tight, it’s coming.”
A video was released around this time last year, and we have it posted here.

Left 4 Dead 2 SDK could support custom character models

When the Left 4 Dead 2 SDK’s finally released, it looks as if it will support custom models.
According to L4DMods, users will have the ability to create survivors, common and special infected, weapons and edited weapon functionality unique to campaigns maps.
Sounds rather neat, actually. Head on through the link to read up on it.

Steam plays host to mods, beginning this week
The modding community may not be quite as prolific as it once was, but maybe it just needs a little push. Or at least, that seems to be what the little voices in Valve’s head are saying, with the game developer-turned-storefront-owner’s plan to stock a portion of Steam’s unlimited virtual shelf space with a few popular PC game mods.
Sometime within the next seven days, Age of Chivalry, D.I.P.R.I.P., Insurgency, Synergy, and Zombie Panic will all be put up for download. Owners of any Source-powered game will, of course, be able to play them for free.
Additionally, Valve will integrate its number-crunching, stat-tracking Steamworks service with every mod hosted on Steam – a move that could send ripples through the entire modding community.
Kudos to Valve for this one. Now let’s just hope Newell and co. decide to extend their steamy love to non-Source mods as well.

Grant given to discover why US WoW players mod more heavily than Chinese
According to this OCRegister story, the National Science Foundation has given UC Irvine $100,000 to investigate why Americans go to greater lengths than the Chinese to mod WoW.
About 5 million Chinese play the MMO, twice the number of American players, yet US subscribers produce far more modifications.
“We are examining the many reasons for this disparity, including cultural and institutional factors,” said UCI informatics professor Bonnie Nardi.
It’s Saturday evening, OK? More through the link.
