Sony: New IP is important to gaming industry’s survival

Sony VP Michael Denny has told attendees at Develop Liverpool that new IP is worth the effort because it’s essential to the survival of the gaming industry.
“For me the answer is clear,” said Denny. “Simply, we must support new IP creation to survive as an industry. Consumers crave new things. If we want to stay relevant in an increasingly competitive marketplace, we have to continue to produce new experiences.
“New IP is truly the lifeblood of the industry and Sony’s commitment to producing new IP will continue. We believe we have a promising line up of exclusive new IPs for the year ahead and one that is particularly special to me and reflects a growth of emotional connection and story-telling, is Heavy Rain.”

Sony has to service LittleBigPlanet user-generated content properly
In an interview with GI, Michael Denny, the senior vice president of Sony Worldwide Studios Europe, said that he sees network services as the next big challenge for the company adding that Sony has to learn what the LBP community needs.
When asked about about whether he could envisage a day where games were released on optical media and as digital download he said:
“Going back a couple of years when we launched a game on a disc, you developed it, you tested it, you put it on disc and marketed it, and that was the end of the game. Now, for some games it’s only the start of the game and the service.”
“With LittleBigPlanet’s user-generated content we have to service that correctly, we have to learn what the community needs and we have to make sure we’re providing additional content along the way. So it’s more about the network experience for us.”

Denny: Heavy Rain is played with your head, not the pad
Speaking to GI, SCEE dev boss Michael Denny’s said that Heavy Rain has nothing to do with being “good” at games, but rather it’s about choice.
The title will appeal to the casual market as well as the core, the exec added.
“When you look at the game it is difficult to pigeon hole, and sometimes we talk about looking for new audiences. But sometimes it’s about creating a product that can may be cross over to a number of different audiences,” he said.
“We have a hope for that product that both core and casual can get into it. It’s a game that when you look about and when you understand it, it’s really not played on the control pad, as in your head.
“It’s about making choices and consequences, it’s not about twitch gaming and how good you are. We feel that the mature nature of the content can appeal to the core and then the consequence based gameplay can appeal to a newer audience, a more casual audience as well.”
There’s a full interview with Denny through there. Heavy Rain releases next year.
