Kim talks third-party, MGS coming to Xbox 360

According to Microsoft VP Shane Kim, the company feels it has claimed a victory in the third-party sector with Metal Gear Solid Rising coming to Xbox 360.
Speaking with Gamasutra at E3, Kim talked about exclusivity and how it benefits consoles.
“I still think exclusive content is really important,” he told the site. “First of all, in games, we’ve said for a long time that a key part of our strategy with Xbox 360 was a level third-party playing field. Now we’ve effectively done that with Metal Gear Solid coming to the Xbox 360.
“The economics are such that third parties also have to support multiple platforms, and you can’t ignore Xbox 360. It’s the second leading platform.
“But I also think we have to broaden our definition of exclusive content now. It has to include things like Xbox Live, because I do think Xbox Live is a real competitive differentiator for us.
“And now Project Natal is going to be an exclusive thing, too. And so, we feel good about how that’s shaping up, but it’s really not about relying on third parties, because I don’t think that that is sustainable, as we’ve proven. And it’s up to each of us to differentiate on our own.”

Kojima teaser site reveals another countdown

The Kojima teaser site finally switched around a bit, and after waiting around for the update, we were presented with yet another teaser.
The clock was reset, and now along with the flashing “S” or “5″ there are the new letters and numbers “E”, “3″, and either a “q” or backwards “g”, possibly a “9″ or something else entirely.
We have no idea at this point.
All we know is that it’s a countdown to a countdown of sorts. Wait til E3 basically.
Go see for yourself.
Thanks for the company, Michael.

Japanese 7-Eleven claims Kojima’s teaser is a new Metal Gear

The teaser site over at Kojima Productions is scheduled to reveal what is in store for us later this evening, but that has not stopped a Japanese 7-Eleven e-Commerce database from claiming it’s a Metal Gear game.
Its listing mentions upcoming issues of trade magazines offering coverage of the MGS games, specifically pointing out Famitsu PSP+PS3.
Other than implying that the game is Sony only, the listing also mentions that the magazines are slated to hit retail on May 30.
Over on the Kojima site, there’s just over six hours left before another bit of tease is added, or we get a full reveal.
Maybe it will at least shed light on the “5″ that pops up with the lightening. Or it could be an “S”.
We don’t know, really. But it’s killing us.
Thanks, IGN.

Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection ships in US
Konami US has confirmed the shipping of Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection in America. The PS2 pack features all the Metal Gear games so far, including MGS, MGS2 (director’s cut) and MGS3 “in a commemorative package with artwork by renowned Metal Gear Solid artist Yoji Shinkawa”.
No word on this coming to Europe, and it’s looking distinctly unlikely in the near future if we’re being realistic. Konami Europe’s made no noise on it whatsoever up to now.
Press release after the link.

MGS will be PS2 port for Essential Collection
According to this, the original Metal Gear Solid in the upcoming MGS: Essential Collection for the US will be a full PlayStation 2 port on a DVD. The original PSone game was CD-based and needed a disc change half way through.
“Metal Gear Solid 1 will in fact be released on a Playstation 2 disc,” said that report. “No disc swapping. No more gray memory card. Other than those two improvements the port should be entirely transparent to the player, retaining the PS1′s visuals and gameplay mechanics.”
Which is awesome. The whole thing – all MGS games up to now – are included in the package for $30. What would be even more awesome is a European date announcement. Konami: don’t be rubbish. Release the frigging thing over here. Don’t make us cry.
