ASCII Media Works, known for its Dengeki magazines, has reported that Resident Evil: Revelations has sold-through 75% of its initial shipment in Japan its first week on sale, which essentially is around 158,012 copies. The figures show a discrepancy between ASCII’s figures and those of Media Create’s, which stated earlier this week the Capcom title moved 146,559 units its first week on sale. Furthermore, ASCII’s figures state another debut, Tales of Innocence R for Vita, moved 70% of its shipment, which is close to 53,000 copies, a bit less than the 54,853 reported by Media Create. Regardless which figures are correct, both debuts did well the first week on offer. Thanks, Siliconera.

PS Vita have rebounded slightly in Japan after week-over-week declines since launch, and the new handheld should send Namco a thank you card for the resurgence, as it was due to Tales of Innocence R’s debut which did it. Over on Media Create’s weekly software chart, the Tales game wasn’t the only debut in the top three, as Armored Core V and Resident Evil Revelations took the number one and second place spots, respectively.

Armored Core V topped the charts with 163,906 units moved on PS3, and the Xbox 360 version landed at number six with 24,719 units sold.

Resident Evil Revelations hit 3DS running with 146,559 units moved, and Tales of Innocence R moved 54,853 units for the three spot, which gave Vita a title in the top 20 once more.

The other debut for the week, Namco’s PSP title Gundam Mokuba no Kiseki, landed at 11 with 9,121 units sold.

Over on the hardware end, last week, PS2 and Xbox 360 were the only systems to show growth; however, Media Create’s latest figures show the growth was sort-lived, as both declined in sales for the week.

PSP and its handheld competitors DSi and DSi LL also saw a sales decline during the period. Wii and PS3 sales were up slightly over the prior week, but 3DS and Vita were the clear winners in the growth department with an extra 3,829 and 3,723 units moved, respectively, over the prior week.

The full top 20 for the week ending January 29 with LtD sales in parentheses is posted below. Last week’s chart can be found here.

PS Vita sales in Japan continued to decline last week according to Media Create’s weekly sales chart. The system moved 15,219 units, which is 3,142 units less than the prior week, and is the system’s lowest sales period since it launched in the region during December.

Furthermore, no software titles represented the system on Media Create’s top 20, as PS3 and PSP claimed three titles each and Xbox 360 had a software title in the top five, D3′s Onechanbara Z Kagura, which helped boots sales of the hardware by 69 units over the week prior.

The rest of the chart was was dominated by titles for 3DS and Wii, which had seven and six on offer, respectively.

Debuts for the period included Rhythm Thief and Onechanbara Z Kagura, which sold 31,598 and 22,013 units, respectively. Other debuts for the week were Heroes Phantasia and Beyond the Labyrinth, each moving under 16,000 units.

Mario Kart 7 was the clear winner though with 35,105 units sold, bringing its LtD total since releasing in December to 1,404,728 units.

Sales of current generation systems were down overall across the board, except, as noted above for Xbox 360. However, PS2 sales increased over the prior week by 137 units.

It’s unclear at present why PS2 had a boost in sales given the information provided to us at press time.

The full top 20 for the week with LtD sales in parentheses is posted below. Last week’s chart can be found here.

In Japan, Vita saw an upswing at launch, but sales have progressively dropped ever since:

Launch: 324,859

Week 2: 72,479

Week 3: 42,648

Week 4: 18,361

For the week ending January 15, the holiday sales drop not only affected Vita, but 3DS as well, with unit sales for the handheld dropping 50% over the week prior, despite still maintaining the top spot on the hardware chart.

Media Create has stopped reporting sales of DS Lite, which last week only sold 28 units in the region.

PS3 and PSP, which landed in second and thrid place, respectively, also saw a drop in sales.

The full hardware chart with last week’s sales in parentheses is below, courtesy of Andriasang.

PS2: 766 (1,659)

The software chart for the same period was topped by the aforementioned Namco title for PSP, but it wasn’t the only debut for the week, Tecmo’s Spirit Camera and Namco Ace Combat 3D were also new to charts.

Mario Kart 7, Monster Hunter 3G, Super Mario 3D Land, and Inazuma Eleven Go helped Super Robot Taise round out the top 5.

A lack of new releases

For the week ending January 8, there were no new releases in the region, so you would be forgiven for thinking the top 20 looked similar to last week’s.

Mario Kart 7 topped the chart with 157,188 units moved, and was followed by Super Mario Land 3D with 119,093 units sold. Monster Hunter 3G moved 98,355 units for the week, and the chart also saw the return of Nintendogs + Cats which landed in the 13 spot.

After failing to equal the 3DS’s launch figures, sales of the Vita didn’t pick up pace in its second week at Japanese retail, shifting just 72,479 units.

In the wake of poor sales, PlayFront reports Japanese retailers have cut prices on the more expensive 3G version of the console by up to 20%.

The 3DS, on the other hand, had an exceptionally strong week, pulling 482,200 sales and passing the 4 million milestone.

It’s a one-sided battle at the moment, but the holiday delay means we’re getting close to Media Create’s next release, so stay tuned to see if New Year sales bring any change.

Software
On the software side, the Vita didn’t even enter the top 20. Again, the 3DS dominated – Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land proved holiday favourites, and Monster Hunter G charted again.

If not for franchise favourites Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Warriors Orochi 2 (that’s Warriors Orochi 3 by western numbering), Nintendo would have had a clean sweep of the top ten, with the ageing Wii surging once more.

See the full breakdown below, with last week’s sales in parentheses, and check last week’s figures here.

Ahead of its official data release tomorrow, Japanese sales track firm Media Create has released a preliminary report.

Andriasang reports the firm puts Vita sales on December 17 and 18 at 325,000 – slightly higher than rival service Enterbrain’s data.

While not privy to Sony’s figures, Media Create estimates the initial shipment was 500,000, as supported by an earlier Nikkei report. This works out at about 65% sell-through.

Echoing comments from the Nikkei report, Media Create CEO Atsushi Hosokawa said the system’s higher price tag and lack of “killer app” was stalling sales.

“The shipment was abundant, so it seems that there were hardly any reports of inability to buy due to shortages. Regarding sold units, to be honest we would like to have seen it sell a bit more, but you can say that it reached a certain level of success,” he hazarded.

Interestingly, Hosokawa noted that continuing strong sales of the PSP – around 60,000 last week – could be holding the Vita back.

The Vita arrives in the west in February.

Media Create’s weekly release of Japanese sales figures revealed the titan that is Monster Hunter still has the power to wow, propelling the 3DS to new heights. Meanwhile, the most Western of Western RPGs won local hearts.

Monstrously good sales
The 3DS had its strongest single sales week since its launch in March this year, largely on the back of Monster Hunter 3G, which sold over half a million units. The game is yet another version of Munster Hunter Tri, which has already shifted millions of units on PSP, PlayStation 3 and Wii.

Mario Kart 7 sales continued to be strong, although significantly down from last week’s stellar effort, and Super Mario 3D Land managed to retain third position, granting the 3DS a trifecta at the top of the charts.

Elsewhere, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim had a strong week, shifting over 100,000 units across both major consoles. It’s a gratifying result for a game so divorced from JRPG conventions, and even managed to ensure the Xbox 360 got a spot in the charts – a rare occurrence.

See the full software chart below. Last week’s figures can be found here.

Hardware
The 3DS dominated this week, with hardware sales rocketing up. Last week Nintendo president Satoru Iwata was excited about the system approaching the 3 million mark, overtaking the DS in terms of week-by-week sales and thereby ahead of one of the best selling consoles in the industry’s history. It must be champagne time at Ninty this week with a further 350,000 sales pushing the handheld well past that milestone.

It was also confirmed overnight that the handheld had sold 200,000 units in Australia since as of its 37th week, making it the fastest selling console in the country ever.

In other Big N news, the Wii had a good week, coming in at third place, thanks to a software chart dominated by lower-selling but numerous entries for the ageing console.

Otherwise it was business as usual, with the PSP sitting near the top and the PS2 at the bottom, but the Xbox 360 nearly tripled sales this week – probably thanks to Skyrim again.

Media Create has released its unit sales chart for the week of October 31 through November 6, and of the nine title debuts this week, Super Mario 3D Land took the top spot, besting Uncharted 3 by 218,493 units.

Super Mario moved 343,492 units, and helped provide a spike in 3DS sales. The handheld moved 145,271 units this week, compared to last week’s 65,041 units.

Other software debuts this week other than Uncharted 3 were Battlefield 3, Slime Mori Mori Dragon Quest 3 and various versions of Winning Eleven which followed last month’s release on PS3 and Xbox 360.

The top 20 software chart is below. Last week’s figures can be found through here.

The release of Uncharted 3 and Battlefield 3 also helped PS3 sell a few more units compared to last week, but not by much. While BF3 was also released on 360 in the region, it didn’t help console sales at all, as units moved were down by 5 over last week.

In the first nine months of 2011, each of the three traditional games industry markets returned very different sales results.

As part of its semi-annual investor briefing, Nintendo released top 20 software charts for Europe, Japan and the US, drawing on data from MediaCreate, Gfk International and NPD.

Europe
The PlayStation maintained its lead among the HD consoles, bringing home seven chart positions as opposed to the Xbox 360′s three.

Nintendo’s consoles clearly took home the prize though; the Wii took six places and the DS three.

FIFA 12 on PS3 was the best selling game, also charting on the Xbox 360 – and, astoundingly, FIFA 11 also took a spot.

Japan
Portable multiplayer experiences were a strong presence on the Japanese charts, topped by Monster Hunter Portable 3rd. The HD re-release on PS3 also made it in.

Despite releasing just weeks before the end of the charted period, Dark Souls snuck into the charts. Namco Bandai also scored a major win by netting second position with Tales of Xilia.

The perennial Wii favourites remained strong but there was little new in Nintendo’s offerings; Square Enix’s re-release of the first three Dragon Quest games scored a chart position.

Two of Tecmo Koei’s Warriors games charted, including Samurai Warriors 3 Z, which has not been granted a Western release; only the Wii original is available.

On the US side, the Xbox 360 unsurprisingly dominated, taking out ten chart positions. Mortal Kombat was the only multiplatform release to sell more on the PlayStation 3 than the Xbox 360.

US
The DS remained strong in the US, with both Pokemon releases charting highly, as well as New Super Mario Bros. The Wii took top spot with Just Dance 2, and two other dancing games charted; the only core Wii game to chart was New Super Mario Bros.

Call of Duty: Black Ops charted on both major consoles, despite releasing in November 2010.

The charts, replicated in full below, cover January through September 2011; you can expect to see a fair shake up as the final quarter unleashes some serious heavy-hitters, not least among them, the Great Shooter Showdown of Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Software
Gekijouban Macross F: Sayonara no Tsubasa made a strong debut – you may know the franchise by its Western adaptation, Robotech. This one’s based on the movie of the same name, apparently, and is the sequel to Macross Frontier: Itsuwari no Utahime.

After last week’s storm, Ace Combat: Assault Horizon sales dropped off sharply, but maintained a more than respectable level.

Sports surged back to dominance after a post-summer lull, perhaps triggered by the release of FIFA 12, which in its first week only just pipped sales of Winning Eleven – Pro Evolution Soccer – months after launch.

A couple of new Western first person games appeared, with Deus Ex: Human Revolution proving a little underwhelming and Dead Island, of all things, even managing to pull a chart entry on the Xbox 360.

New releases accounted for almost half of the software charts, with perennial favourites dying back a little; hopefully the holiday release crunch will refresh things a little.

The 3DS was back on top again, for the sixth week in a row. Nintendo’s price cut seems to have mollified Japanese consumers at least; the 3DS is taking a reasonable share of the software charts on a regular basis now. The upcoming release of Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land is likely to see anther surge in console sales, too.

Media Create has released sales data for the week of October 10 through 16, and the Japanese market apparently went rather gaga over Ace Combat: Assault Horizon in a week full of new releases.

Assault Horizon, other newcomers take software

Namco’s title moved 149,470 units on PS3 during its three days on the market, and the Xbox 360 version landed at number six on the chart with 20,523 units moved.

The Japanese version of Just Dance Wii debuted in second place with 90,039 units moved, and Forza Motorport 4, Dead Rising 2: Off the Record, Class of Heroes Final and Clock Zero rounded out the week of newcomers in the top 20.

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon (PS3): 149,470

Just Dance Wii (Wii): 90,039

Winning Eleven 2012 (PS3): 61,787

Zelda Ocarina of time 3D (3DS): 7,239

Hardware flattens, PSPgo delisted

Hardware numbers weren’t much different compared to last week, and 3DS stayed on top despite only having one offering in the software top 20.

The biggest change for the week, was PSPgo being removed from the chart.

The handheld has been moving only double digits for eons, and with Vita set for release, it only made sense for the firm to stop tracking its sales. Meanwhile, PS2 is still moving units, and sold 1,280 for the week.

Hardware figures are below, with last week’s sales in parentheses.

3DS: 55,025 (58,504)

DS Lite: 71 (52)

Three NES titles have picked up the top spot in the Japanese charts for the week ending September 18th as Square Enix’s Dragon Quest Collection, a compilation of the first three titles in the series emulated for Wii.

The game has been released as part of Square Enix’s 25th Anniversary celebrations for the series, though the disc also includes a first glimpse at Dragon Quest X in addition to the three NES titles emulated with extra features such as save states. It sold 263,000 copies across that week, and was the only new release in the chart.

Namco Bandai’s Tales of Xillia slipped to number two, while another compilation disc held onto a chart position at number three, the Resident Evil Revival Selection.

In the hardware charts the Nintendo 3DS reclaimed the top spot as the best selling machine with nearly 59,000 units sold – a jump of just under 10,000 on the previous week. The PS3 came second after suffering a nasty decline in sales from around 65,000 units to 36,000. PSP placed third with 25,000 machines sold.

Here’s the full chart:
1. Dragon Quest Collection (Square Enix)
2. Tales Of Xillia (Namco Bandai)
3. Resident Evil Revival Selection (Capcom)
4. Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo)
5. Everyone’s Rhythm Heaven (Nintendo)
6. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD (Capcom)
7. Atsumete! Kirby (Nintendo)
8. The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time 3D (Nintendo)
9. Grand Knights History (Marvelous)
10. Monster Hunter Diary Poka Poka Felyne Village G (Capcom)

Software
Marvelous’s RPG Grand Knights History took out top spot in its debut week, edging out Monster Hunter HD. But the latter remained strong, and may prove a persistent entry over the next few weeks.

Interestingly, the Xbox 360 managed to sneak into the top 20 this week for the first time in ages – unsurprisingly, it was Monster Hunter again.

Elsewhere, a handful of new releases performed reasonably well, with a re-release of Call of Duty: Black Ops drawing interest, and a Corpse Party title confirming interest in the soon to be localised series.

Below you’ll find Media Create’s top 20 sales chart for the week ending September 4, 2011. Last week’s figures can be found here.

Hardware
The 3DS is still the best-selling hardware this week, but dropped another 6,000 units from late week’s figure as the price cut frenzy continues to wane. It’ll be interesting to see if next week brings less sales for Nintendo, as consumers anticipate a hardware revision, or if the second circle pad peripheral will actually drive interest up.

Overall, year-on-year hardware sales figures are up, with the PlayStation 3 and 3DS’s price-cut bumps creating a small spike. Individually, all other platforms are down, with the PSP and Wii each dropping 5,000 units from 2010′s figures – not that significant given both have successors on the way.

The rumblings of the upcoming release crunch are already visible in this week’s Japanese charts, but while the 3DS stole the hardware sales glory and a PS3 game nabbed top spot on the charts, elsewhere it’s all about the PSP.

Software
A spate of new releases livened up the dully static results of the last few weeks, with Tecmo Koei of particular note, scoring two top five places with spin-off versions of its Warriors series.

But it was Monster Hunter that took the crown. Echoing its incredible, chart-dominating performance on PSP, the first entry in the Japanese exclusive PSP remaster series managed almost 300,000 sales in just three days on sale. The next strongest performer, Black Rock Shooter, had nearly a third of that garnered over the same period.

Rhythm Heaven remains a strong performer for the Wii, as does Wii Sports Resort, but Nintendo also maintained a strong chart presence with Pokemon and Ocarina of Time.

Below you’ll find Media Create’s top 20 sales chart for the week ending August 28, 2011. Last week’s figures can be found here

Enthusiasm for the PlayStation 3 price cut seems to be holding steady with around 30,000 sales – up from pre-price cut levels of around 20,000 – but the 3DS is definitely ruling the roost with twice that under its belt.

Still, it’s another significant drop off, down from over 100,000 last week and almost 200,000 the week before. Nintendo will be hoping to maintain the spike, but it’ll need a software boost – the 3DS managed just two entires. A number of new announces – and, possibly, a hardware revision – are expected at pre-TGS events as well as the show itself. The latter rumours may have Japanese consumers hedging their bets.

Software
Four new releases made it into the top ten this week, but none performed well enough to take the top spot. Instead, generally lacklustre retails saw Rhythm Heaven returned to top position despite declining sales.

Although 3DS hardware sales dropped off again after a price cut-fuelled spike the last week, it maintained three spots in the software charts, although both Ocarina of Time and Nintendogs dropped off since last week. Pokémon Rumble Blast stayed high, but dropped 63 percent.

Summer trends kept sports games high, but a lack of blockbusters kept the chart fairly varied otherwise.

Below you’ll find Media Create’s top 20 sales chart for the week ending August 21, 2011. Last week’s figures can be found here.

Hardware
The 3DS took a tumble this week, with sales almost halved as interest in the reduced-price console waned again. Nevertheless, with over 100,000 units sold it remained ruler of the roost.

The PSP came in at second place as usual, with the PS3 behind despite a close to 50 percent spike in sales thanks to the recent price cut.

Media Create’s Japanese sales tracking for the week ending August 7 show the 3DS taking an expected downturn, a chart dominated by summer fun, and the PS3 looking very quiet indeed.

Sports cash in on summer vibes
Rhythm Heaven has toppled from the top spot on the charts, which it held for two weeks running, replaced by PSP title J-League Pro Soccer Club! 7: Euro +. Nevertheless, the Wii retained a strong presence in the charts, helped along by the long-delayed release of Epic Mickey, entering at number six.

Nintendo and Namco Bandai both had good weeks, with each nabbing five charters each – half the charts divided between two publishers.

New releases really shook up the summer charts, with Kirby Mass Attack at number two, Toriko: Gourmet Survival at three, All Kamen Rider: Rider Generation at five, and Family Fishing # at six.

RPGs had an underwhelming presence, as Devil Survivor 2 dropped off notably from last week, and Half Minute Hero 2 struggling at 17 in its first week. The more traditional JRPG fare of Elminage III: Ankoku no Shito to Yaiyou no Kyuuden managed a little better at 16.

Sports-themed games, on the other hand, charted strongly, with Family Fishing, Wii Sports Resort, two versions of Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2011, and Inazuma Eleven Strikers following J-League’s lead.

By coincidence, the PSP version of Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2011 and Inazuma Eleven Strikers on Wii both reported identical sales. Huh.

Below you’ll find Media Create’s top 20 sales chart for the week ending August 7, 2011. Last week’s figures can be found here.

3DS sales down 75 percent
The announcement of a price cut for the 3DS predictably killed sales of the console, although second hand sales – which entitle the user to entry into the 3DS Ambassador Program – are reportedly through the roof. The 3DS dropped off to a quarter of last week’s sales, shamefully overlapped by the DSi LL (XL) and very nearly pipped by the bog-standard DSi. 3DS sales life to date in Japan have now reached 1,310,288.

Otherwise, the charts stayed reasonably static, with the PSP churning out it’s usual 30,000 plus sales, and the PS3 and Wii remaining strong. The former saw a minor dip easily accountable by a release drought; only one PS3 game broke the top 20 this week.

According to data retrieved from Media Create, sales of used 3DS systems have doubled after Nintendo announced the system was getting a price reduction. According to Nintendo World Report, Media Create believes it’s due to players wanting to get in on the Ambassador Program before the price drops, or sue to retailers dropping prices on used systems by around ¥4,000 ($51).

In the US, it has been rumored that Walmart will be dropping the price of 3DS a few days early, which would ensure the big box store would get the jump on it’s competitors.

The Japanese hardware and software charts for the week ending July 3 finds 3DS back on top after being pushed out last week by PSP, and it’s all thanks to Namco’s Tales of the Abyss.

Luke, Natalia, Guy and co. win

Tales of the Abyss, which had a solid debut, moved 74,173 units during its first three days at market, beating out other chart newcomers Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition, ToHeart2 Dungeon Travelers, Goldeneye 007, Mashiroiro Symphony, and TDU2, respectively.

Still, second place SSFIV:AE didn’t do too shabby, as it moved 54,924 units during the same period.

All in all, there were 11 new releases in the top 20 for the week, which look quite a bit better than last week’s report.

Below is Media Create’s top 20 sales chart for the week ending July 3,2011. Last week’s figures can be found here.

3DS steals top spot back from PSP

3DS was back on top of the Media Create charts after last week’s vacation, with 30,233 units moved. However, it was a narrow victory as combined PSP hardware moved 29,871 units – a difference of only 362 units.

Other Nintendo hardware fared rather well too, with Wii moving 12, 423 units compared to last week’s 9,511 which can likely be attributed to GoldenEye 007 finally seeing a release in Japan.

Sales of older DS models were up as well, but not enough to raise the red line too much. Figuratively, the increase was so low, the line would be flat if you were to create a graph.

Xbox 360 moved 92 units more than the week prior, PS2 sales were down by a little over 100 units, and PSPgo managed to sell 7 units for the week.

PS3 sales were up 9,448 units compared to the prior reporting period, thanks to three software debuts in the top 20.

The Japanese hardware and software charts for the week ending June 26 saw the latest entry in the long-running Atelier series take top spot, but modest hardware sales.

No heavy hitters

It was quite a slow week in japanese sales, with Atelier Meruru: Alchemist of Arland the top performer at just 82,585 units sold, which is a let-down after last week’s two plus-100,000 sellers.

We were expecting to see a large Ocarina of Time sales spike after rumours of low stock keeping sales down, but either the new shipment hasn’t arrived or it was wishful thinking.

The PS3 and the PSP remain dominant on the charts, but it’s interesting to note four Wii entries. The usual first-party perennials are joined by Kadokawa’s Earth Seeker, sneaking in on the bottom rung, a mysterious post-apocalyptic action game. Another target for localisation campaigns, I suspect.

The West represented with the newly-released Mass Effect 2 PS3 and Grand Theft Auto IV complete edition. Hooray!

Below you’ll find Media Create’s Top 20 sales chart for the week ending June 26, 2011. Life to dat figures appear in brackets where applicable. Last week’s edition can be found here.

DS – 3

Wii – 4

PSP back on top
It was a poor week all-round for hardware sales. After last week’s Zelda-driven surge, the 3DS has dropped back into second place on the hardware charts. The PSP continues to sell steadily, but not to shine, with nothing spike-worthy in the summer software line-up.

The PS3 disappointed despite securing the top software spot and four other top-20 positions, noting only a blip of increased sales.

The Wii was the only system to see a significant boost in sales, up to 9,511 units from last week’s 6,678.

The DS, taken as combined SKUs, actually shifted about the same number of units as the Wii as both legacy systems wind down.

Japanese hardware sales, June 20 – June 26, 2011 (separate SKUs)

PSP: 29,168

3DS: 27,905

PS3: 16,993

Wii: 9,511

DSi LL: 4,903

DSi: 4,503

X360: 2,152

PS2: 1,332

DS Lite: 134

PSP go: 21

Can’t get enough of Dragon Quest Monsters

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 – Professional for NDS was once again the top software mover of the week, selling 43,886 units.

Patapon 3, which debuted in fourth place last week, moved up the chart to claim second.
