ASA dismisses Change4Life ad complaints

The UK Advertising Standards Authority has dismissed complaints made against a government ad campaign which promotes exercise by showing a child holding a gaming controller.
But Tiga and MCV lodged complaints against the Change4Life image, which they claimed suggested the government was linking early death to playing videogames.
“Whilst the ASA Council understood the concerns of Tiga and those complainants who worked in the videogames industry, it noted that the ad did not claim that playing computer or console games alone would lead to illness or premature death,” wrote the agency.
“The Council considered that most readers would understand that the ad was discouraging a sedentary lifestyle and used the example of playing a console game as an illustration of the type of behaviour which might lead to long-term health problems if no exercise were taken alongside more sedentary activities.
“The Council considered it unlikely that most readers would infer from the ad that playing videogames was the sole contributory factor in the development of the health problems mentioned in the ad.”

GameStop stamps on Woolworths buyout rumour
An MCV rumour that GameStop is looking at buying dying UK retailer Woolworths is incorrect, the US chain has said in a statement.
“Claims originating from games industry publication MCV hold no merit and are completely inaccurate,” the company said.
MCV did not comment on GameStop’s release.
The site’s original piece cited an anonymous source who said, “[U.K. retailer] GAME frustrated GameStop when it bought GameStation. Bosses at GameStop had pretty much given up on launching a U.K. assault – but now, thanks to Woolies, that door is open again. They’re up against other bidders, but they’ll fight tooth and nail.”

Houser: Powerful people want me out of business
More from the MCV Sam Houser interview. Apparently the high-ups want Rockstar dead. Life’s not really like a film, Sam. you’re not going to find a horse’s head in your bed.
Houser’s biggest challenge has been “surviving in an environment in which powerful people want to put you out of business for their own political or economic capital,” he told the UK trade paper.
No wonder GTA ended up the way it did. Do you see a knife in every shadow, Sam? We bet you do.

Reuters source rubbishes “$1.5 billion Viacom for Take-Two” story
This Reuters report, quoting a source, has said that this story rumouring a £23 per share offer from Viacom to Take-Two is incorrect.
“Media conglomerate Viacom Inc is not in talks to buy video game maker Take-Two Interactive Software Inc, a source familiar with the matter said on Thursday, disputing reports of an offer.”
The piece continued, “Reports on the Web and a video games trade publication Web site said Viacom had offered $1.5 billion for the maker of the popular ‘Grand Theft Auto’ games franchise, citing unnamed sources. Shares of Take-Two rose as much as 12 percent on Thursday on the rumor.”
Viacom has refused to comment on the situation.
“This is very unlikely,” Pacific Crest Securities analyst Evan Wilson said of the speculation. “Video games are a hot space and media companies are interested in participating in the growth, but for Viacom, they are pursuing a completely separate strategy.”
“I don’t think any of those media companies has the appetite to get into a new business,” added super-analyst Michael Pachter.
