Disney acquires Marvel in $4 billion deal
Holy shit. Disney’s announced it’s acquiring Marvel for around $4 billion. That’s roughly $50 per Marvel share, a 30 percent premium to Marvel’s current share price.
“This transaction combines Marvel’s strong global brand and world-renowned library of characters including Iron Man, Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain America, Fantastic Four and Thor with Disney’s creative skills, unparalleled global portfolio of entertainment properties, and a business structure that maximizes the value of creative properties across multiple platforms and territories,” said Disney head Robert A Iger.
“Ike Perlmutter and his team have done an impressive job of nurturing these properties and have created significant value. We are pleased to bring this talent and these great assets to Disney.”
Disney now owns over 5,000 Marvel characters. There may be some videogames involved.

Marvel finished with “crappy” movie-based games

The executive vice president of the digital media end of Marvel, Ira Rubenstein, has told Joystiq that Marvel is finished with making “crappy” movie-based games.
Still, it would like to have games tied to the release of movies, but each character will stay in his/her own little world and used the lastest Marvel game X-Men Origins: Wolverine as an example.
“We are not doing movie-based games anymore,” said Rubenstein. “Actually, wait … we are not doing crappy movie-based games anymore. You can quote me on that.”
Rubenstein told the site that Iron Man 2 has been in the works since the first game was finished, and since he was not involved with it, not to blame him for the quality.

Marvel MMO creator Gazillion is really, really busy. It’s got up to seven games in the works, in fact.
“We actually have six or seven titles that are in production right now,” marketing boss Paul Baldwin told Joystiq at GDC.
Gazillion, founded in 2005, was announced as being the developer of Marvel MMOs for the next ten years earlier this month.
The first “adult” game to emerge from the partnership won’t hit till 2012. A children’s title, based on cartoon Superhero Squad will hit in 2010.

Marvel MMO not out till 2012

According to this BigDownload article, Marvel’s “grown up” Gazillion MMO won’t release until 2012.
Apparently the date’s been picked as there’s a bunch of Marvel movie content turning up in the same year.
Given that’s the projected date, and MMOs are the least stable of all development projects, waiting for this is likely to be something akin to “pissing in the wind”.
You haven’t got anything better to do, though. Right?

EA and Marvel quit partnership
EA and Marvel have confirmed that the companies will no longer be co-working on fighting games following the closure of EA Chicago, the developer of upcoming projects based on the partnership.
“EA and Marvel have jointly agreed to discontinue development of the Marvel titles under the EA Games Label. This was a business decision based on EA’s portfolio strategy,” said an Electronic Arts spokesperson here.
One title, canned in the closure, would have been the second fighter to emerge from the deal, the first being Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects in 2005.
A Marvel spokesperson said that the dissolution of the EA deal “will not affect Marvel’s ongoing plans to release fighting games based on the Marvel properties in the future.”
