Mincecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson has apparently cancelled 0x10c, his ambitious space sim, but a group of fans is hoping to bring it back to life.

Minecraft creator Notch participated in a first-person shooter game jam, and he had to put something together in seven days, and what came out of that is a Unity-powered arcade-style zombie arena called Shambles in which the mouse sensitivity is too low. There’s no objective; just run around killing for points and to collect health and ammo drops while trying not to die. Note: there is no auto-reload here.

Psychonauts 2 looked like a faint possibility last year, after Minecraft creator Markus ‘Notch’ Persson Tweeted Tim Schafer saying that they should band together and make it happen. As it turned out, the game would need $18 million to become a reality. Needless to say, Notch is out.

Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson has personally donated $250,000 to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a not-for-profit lobby group favoured by the games industry for its work in digital rights advocacy.

Wurm Online finally has a launch date after spending six and a half years in beta. According to the developer blog, the free-to-play MMO in which everything in it is crafted and created by players, will release via version 1.0 on December 12. Created by Code Club AB, the game’s development was overseen by Markus “Notch” Persson and Rolf Jansson under Onetoofree AB and includes servers with a focus on PvP, PvE, or one on virtual economies. Wurm went into beta in 2003 and went gold in 2006. Persson left the project in 2007.

Minecraft developer Mojang isn’t expected to grow into a mega-studio despite its phenomenal successes, because the team wants to retain its independent approach and atmosphere.

0x10c codes were handed out by Markus “Notch” Persson, in celebration of Minecraft reaching its 8 million sold milestone on PC. The way the codes were handed out though, was a bit tricky.

Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson is very quietly working away on his next project, space adventure 0x10c. It’ll be a while before there’s any solid gameplay to squizz at, but this video shows how the sim’s lighting and physics are coming along.

Shooting the breeze on Twitter, Mojang boss Markus “Notch” Persson has shown enthusiasm for Oculus Rift, a Kickstarter-funded VR headset which has attracted the likes of id’s John Carmack and teams at Valve.
“Very excited about the Oculus Rift. Can’t wait to start playing with it. If we get it to work with Java, 0x10c will support it,” the developer promised, adding that Minecraft support is up to lead developer Jens Bergensten.
0x10c is Notch’s new space exploration game, still in early development.
