20130404_camelot_unchained_engine_demo

Camelot Unchained has a custom engine, a bold move designed to support its core conceit: genuinely massive player battles. In a Kickstarter update, Mark Jacobs shared a video showing off how the early engine tech can already support 10,000 characters on screen with no frame-rate drop. It comes at the cost of fancy lighting and effects, but the MMO’s signature, core feature is clearly possible. Take a look through the link.

Thanks, Massively.

Camelot Unchained will use RvR to generate “server pride”

20130308_camelot_unchained

In the latest Camelot Unchained developer blog, Cuty State Entertainment founder and former Mythic lead Mark Jacobs said that he hopes the unusual MMORPG can foster all kinds of “pride” among its users – pride in the race, class, guild, realm and sever they choose to play with. “This is not something that CSE can simply will into existence through great programming, clever design, or gorgeous artwork. What will bring server pride about are the players themselves,” he said, saying that this is why he’s pushed to build a realm versus realm system into Camelot Unchained. The MMORPG will be Kickstarted this month.

Camelot Unchained dev refuses to take the safe route

20130208_camelot_unchained

Camelot Unchained’s developers are willing to alienate the mass market if it results in a better game for a niche audience. In a developer blog, City State Entertainment’s Mark Jacobs said he’s willing to embrace features which appeal only to hardcore players, like slow levelling and a day-night cycle – things publishers wouldn’t take a risk on – and cited Dark Age of Camelot and Warhammer Online’s bold approach to new and interesting experimental features. The MMO is to be crowdfunded.

Thanks, Massively.

Zeschuk on BioWare and Mythic – “We’re not merged at all”

biowarelogo

BioWare co-head Greg Zeschuk has told Eurogamer that BioWare and Mythic are still two different entities, despite being pulled together into one EA group under Ray Muzyka’s leadership.

“There absolutely is still BioWare and Mythic, we’re not merged at all,” he said, speaking in London last week.

“That’s kind of how it all works. Ray and I, we’ve never operated by telling people what to do, that’s one of the reasons why we have great games: we don’t tell our team how to build Dragon Age. We say, ‘Here are the goals,’ and they go and figure out how they want it to work.”

It was announced last month that Mythic boss Mark Jacobs would be departing the developer, and that Muzyka would be assuming control of the new division.

Mark Jacobs bids adieu to fans and Mythic

markjacobs

Mark Jacobs has written a farewell of sorts to fans and former colleagues via his blog, Games are a Niche Market.

The former head of Mythic explains his departure and talks a bit about the changes at the company he co-founded with Rob Denton.

“Early in May, Electronic Arts let me know that they wanted to make some changes within the Games Label and as a result of those changes I have been out of the office (and out of touch with the team, game, etc.) since that day,” he wrote.

“If you are looking or expecting me to damn EA or anyone there, you will be sorely disappointed. Over my 23 years of making games professionally I have refrained from attacking the competition, former and/or current partners, other game developers, etc. except on a few very rare instances.

“I have no intention of breaking with tradition at the present time and I hope my track record in this regard remains unchanged for the rest of my career.”

warhammeronlinea9

Mythic staff are apparently reeling from the news that company boss Mark Jacobs has left the building.

“But they’re also excited to be working with BioWare. I can’t even fathom Mark leaving a company he loved so much, it was his life.

“Personally, I can’t see that this is voluntary in any shape or form.”

It was announced last night that Jacobs had left the company, with BioWare bosses Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk now in control of a newly-formed MMO-RPG EA group.
