Retired NFL players suing EA and Madden for putting them back in the game

johnmadden1

Old people play videogames now, EA. You’re going to have to find a new place to break the law. That is, if a lawsuit — headed up by NFL retiree Bernie Parrish — succeeds in landing the mega-publisher firmly on its hindquarters.

According to the jilted ex-player, John Madden has pulled in “over $100,000,000 in royalties” from the ungodly successful pigskin-tosser, while retired NFL players haven’t seen a single cent, even though the games allegedly use their likenesses. Parrish and co. plan to sue in response.

Last year, retirees scored $28 million in a similar suit against the NFL Players Association. EA and Madden are probably having one final, excessively passionate makeout session with their money before saying goodbye.

EA handed over $35 million to the NFLPA in 2007

nefl

Dave Pear, Oakland Raiders defensive tackle, has published a National Football League Players Association report that shows how much EA payed out to the NFLPA in 2007. The grand total amounts to a staggering $35 million.

This figure does not include the cash EA paid to the NFL for the right to use any licensing, which if you take into account the different team logos, names, stadiums, and other NFL-owned properties, would amount to “a lot”.

The news of this large monetary amount adds more fuel to the fire started by NFL retirees last year, who feel they’ve been shortchanged by the NFL.

EA: Sequels will be 2010′s big hitters, says JR

EA’s just predicted that a slew of sequels will form the bulk of the company’s revenue for fiscal 2010.

Madden, Need for Speed SHIFT, Bad Company 2, the next Harry Potter game and The Sims 3 were named as the those likely to be the biggest games for the firm in the next financial year by CEO John Riccitiello.

BioWare’s Dragon Age was the only original IP named in the list.

EA announced a loss of $641 million for the quarter ending December 31 today, and the loss of 1,100 jobs.

Madden back on PC next year, says Moore

Speaking in last night’s first quarter EA earnings call, EA Sports boss Peter Moore said that Madden and other shelved PC sports games would be back on the format next year.

According to this IGN story, Moore said the firm would be “retooling these titles to take advantage of the online connectivity in a bigger and more meaningful way. Stay tuned for more on this.”

Moore pulled many of EA Sports’ franchises back from PC this year saying the firm faced “significant challenges” in making sports games work on the format.
