Laurent Fischer, Nintendo Europe’s MD of marketing, had a good E3. 3DS was the talk of the show and Nintendo’s press conference couldn’t have gone better. He was in a chipper mood, then, when we caught up with him in LA last week to ask him when we can expect a price point for 3DS, how Nintendo feels about Sony and Microsoft’s “rush to motion” and whether or not we’re going to see any price-cutting from Nintendo this year.
Hit it, innit.

Nintendo has announced the Nintendo Wii has sold 8.3 million units in in 2008 making it the largest annual home console seller in European history.
That figure is a massive 58 percent increase over 2007 figures and it takes total Wii console sales up to 14.2 million.
Nintendo DS also broke European records by selling over 11.2 million units in 2008. This is the largest annual sales figure for any games console in European history.
The DS has now sold 31 million units in Europe.
“The sales trend on both Wii and Nintendo DS, hardware and software during 2008 shows that more and more people in Europe are enjoying video games as part of their daily lives,” said Nintendo of Europe MD, Marketing and PR Laurent Fischer.
“This proves that Nintendo’s wish to expand the gaming population has strong potential in Europe.”

Like, dur. Nintendo’s Laurent Fischer has confirmed to GI that Frontier’s LostWinds is the most downloaded WiiWare content in Europe, followed by Gameloft’s TV Show King and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life As A King from Square Enix.
“We’re not communicating on precise figures – this is confidential – but LostWinds has the highest download level in Europe. And then you have the other titles which come close by, like TV Show King and of course Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles,” he said.

According to this GI story, Nintendo of Europe marketing boss Laurent Fischer has confirmed that a Wii storage solution is on the way – but it’s not going to be a hard drive.
“We definitely detect that they [gamers] are serious and we know there is an issue in this, so it’s something that we’re working on,” he said.
“Definitely there’s no plan to issue hardware, an external hard drive, but we know that we have an issue in that area,” he added. “It’s very obvious and we’re perfectly aware of it, but there’s nothing we can say beyond this.”

Nintendo Europe’s senior marketing director, Laurent Fischer, has issued a statement to videogaming247 saying he regrets saying that only “geeks and otaku” care about the issue of Wii storage, and never meant to cause offence.
“I have huge respect for those who, like me, share a common passion for Nintendo and want to make it clear that I would never use and I didn’t use this terminology in such a context or way to cause offence,” he said.
“I regret that this misunderstanding has created such offence and disappointment within the community.”
And that’s the end of that.

David Jaffe loves Nintendo. But he doesn’t love Laurent Fischer, especially after the Nintendo marketeer claimed the only people that cared about Wii storage were “geeks and otaku”. The God of War creator tells us so on his blog.
“This statement, especially coming from a marketing person, reeks of one of two things:
“A – Arrogance at a level that should make Nintendo – if this statement reflects the core of the company – very ashamed.
“B – A marketing person who has no real clue about games and thinks she’s being cute and coy by dissing the ‘geeks’ cause she thinks the mainstream loves them now. If this is the case, she really needs someone to sit her down and explain to her which side her fucking toast has been buttered on for years and will eventually get back to being buttered on.”
Laurent’s a man, David, but we get the sentiment.
