The NPD Group has revealed that EA’s The Sims 3 was the best selling game for the PC last month.

Unfortunately, the NPD Group no longer distributes PC sales data publicly, but it has revealed the above.

EA said that The Sims 3 sold 1.4 million in June.

Wedbush Morgan analyst, Michael Pachter, has weighed in on the June NPDs and feels that the industry is suffering from price fatigue.

“It appears to us that the weak results in March through June signify a weak trend that will continue at least one more month. It is easy to defend the poor results by pointing to a generally lackluster release schedule (especially in April), and to an inordinately successful release schedule last year.

“Compounding this is the continuing drag from the economy, the fact that Wiis are in plentiful supply (meaning that consumers no longer feel compelled to rush out and buy one whenever available), and a likely trend of the Wii audience to be more casual and more seasonal in purchase habits.

“Interestingly, the immensely successful DSi, with 1.7 million units sold in its first three months of release, could not drive a positive bump in DS software sales (-28% June year-overyear). We are most troubled by the decline in sales of the three major consoles. On a year-over-year basis in June, combined console sales were down 30%, with consoles down 41% and handhelds down 17%.

“We don’t think that a weak software lineup is enough to explain what happened, and can only conclude that consumers aren’t sufficiently interested in buying consoles to drive sales higher each month.

“We attribute this lack of interest to price fatigue, and note that the Wii has gone longer than any console in history without a cut of its launch price, while the PS3 has gone more than 18 months without a cut. As there has not been a console price cut so far this month, we expect a similar result in July.”

In June, combined DS and DSi sales showed movement of 766,000 units, more than all current-generation consoles combined with Wii marking its 21st consecutive month of being the best-selling console.

Broken down: DSi sold 424,000 units and DS 342,000, and Wii 362,000.

Wii Motion Plus moved 374,000 total – 205,000 were bundled with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 and 169,000 as a single purchase.

“More consumers continued to gravitate toward products that offer quality experiences and great value for the whole family,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Consumers again selected Nintendo systems for those experiences, particularly our hand-helds.”

Four games published for Nintendo platforms finished in the top 10 including: EA Sports Active at No. 3 with more than 289,000 sold, Wii Fit at No. 4 with more than 271,000 sold, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 with Wii MotionPlus at No. 7 with nearly 205,000 sold and Mario Kart Wii at No. 8 with more than 202,000 sold.

The June NPDs are out and while the figures may show things brightening a bit, there is some bad news too.

This is the fourth month of decline for the industry – down 31 percent to $1.17 billion – and the worst since September 2000 when the decline was at 41 percent. Even with the industry down 12% year-to-date, it could bounce back with a strong back half of the year providing more titles are not pushed into 2010 or later, according to NPD.

Reports show that 4 million new players entered the market since 2008, but some are new retail consumers and some are playing free online games and on mobile devices. The blame for this is being put on the economy, and NPD admits this is one of the first months the belt tightening has reflected sales.

“While some of the decline in retail sales could be a migration on the part of consumers to acquiring content via digital distribution, our reports on downloads and subscriptions reveal that it’s not yet having enough impact on the console market to be an overly meaningful factor in the retail down-turn,” according to NPD’s Anita Frazier. “That said, there are increasing avenues for consumers to game, including via mobile devices, and it’s clear the industry is sorting through how to manage all these opportunities while deploying resources appropriately.”

Xbox 360 was the only platform to have a sales increase over June 2008, and Wii sales while down are still strong.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2010 debuted in June and almost doubled the units sold in the first month compared to PGA Tour ’05 and ’07, which sold 272K units each.

This is the first month since launch that Wii Play has not been featured in the top 10 list for the month. However, good news for Nintendo come with Wii Motion Plus, which sold 169K units in its first month at retail, not counting those bundled with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10.

The June NPD numbers have been released and US hardware sales for the month came in at $1,697,000 instead of the projected $1,547,800.

Nintendo DS was the clear winner, moving 766,500 units, with Wii coming in second with 350,000 units.

The June NPD numbers have been released and Prototype was the clear winner last month, moving 419,00 units for the Xbox 360 version. UFC 2009: Undisputed came in a close second for Xbox 360, moving 338,300 units.

Total software sales came in at $625.8 million, which was 1.56 percent more that the projected $616.2 million.

Still, game sales are down 31 percent.

E3′s, like, so last week. It’s not, obviously, but a day’s a long time in videogames. It’s a day long. NPD released June data last night, showing monster sales for PS3 and a major milestone broken by Nintendo with Wii. Everything you need’s below.

Nintendo focused squarely on the fact Wii had overtaken 360 in US sales in its post-NPD statement last night, although, gallantly, refused to name the Microsoft console in its release.

“Equaling its status on a worldwide basis, Wii has become the best-selling video game console in the United States,” said the company.

“According to independent sales tracking information from the NPD Group, more than 666,000 Wii consoles sold for the month of June, and nearly 10.9 million Wii consoles have been sold in the United States in the 20 months following its November 2006 launch. The system is credited with breaking down the psychological barriers between gamers and non-gamers.”

Sony had an easy month when it came to its post-NPD press release this time, being able to confirm a huge sales victory over 360 in the US in June thanks to the release of both MGS4 and an exclusive Metal Gear bundle.

“PS3, led by the launch of the highly anticipated Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots PS3 bundle, continued to experience tremendous momentum in June 2008, selling 405,488 hardware units – 84% higher than Microsoft’s Xbox 360 (according to NPD June 2008 sales data),” said the statement. “PS3 year-over-year hardware sales growth exceeded 311% in June, with month-over-month growth exceeding 94%.”

SCEA boss Jack Tretton added: “The PlayStation brand is truly hitting its stride on its long-term opportunity across all three platforms. Our strong June numbers serve as proof to the continued momentum of the PS3 and affirms that we’re exactly where we expected to be.”

June NPD figures – as predicted by Reggie in Nintendo’s E3 press conference on Tuesday – have shown that Wii has overtaken Xbox 360 to become the biggest selling American home console of this generation.

According to the group, Wii has now sold 10.9 million machines in America, compared to Xbox 360′s 10.4 million.

June’s NPD figures have shown US game sales up 53 percent year-on-year, a spike caused by increased sales of Wii and DS, and the release of MGS4.

Total games-related sales hit $1.69 billion last month, up from $1.1 billion in the corresponding previous period.

Hardware sales grew 54 percent to $615.1 million from $399.2 million a year ago. Software sales jumped 61 percent to $872.6 million from $542.2 million.

“The video games industry continues to perform in the face of an ever-increasingly difficult economic environment as many turn to more in-home entertainment,” said NPD analyst Anita Frazier.

“Even if growth slows over the back half of 2008, the industry is poised to achieve record-breaking revenues of over $22 billion for the year.”

Surprisingly no one, NPD data for JUne has shown that Metal Gear Solid 4 was by far the bestselling game in the US last month, but a shock comes with Guitar Hero On Tour at number two with over 400,000 units sold. There’s no accounting for taste. Figures below.
