FASA founder says Microsoft “destroyed” its development culture after acquisition

jordanweisman

FASA Interactive founder Jordan Weisman, has said that after his studio was acquired by Microsoft, it “destroyed” the development culture of the firm and almost did the same to Bungie.

“When Microsoft bought FASA Interactive and incorporated it into Microsoft… the two reasons they bought us was, one, they wanted the catalog of intellectual properties and, two, they felt that we had developed a really good development culture,” Weisman told GI.biz. “And the reality is that, pretty much from the day we moved to Redmond, that development culture was destroyed. I don’t think the studio ever really had a chance. It was destroyed right in the beginning.

“When we were acquiring Bungie, they wanted me to sit down with the owners of Bungie and tell them how well the transition went, and it was like – ‘what planet are you guys on?’ This transition did not go well. And actually I became the lead vocal pain in the ass to get things done very different for Bungie.

“I tried to convince them to leave Bungie in Chicago, but not winning that I did succeed in getting them to put them in a walled off room, which didn’t follow any of the other Microsoft stuff. We were much better able to defend Bungie’s culture than we were FASA’s culture.”

Weisman’s in the process of getting some of his IP’s back from Microsoft, and is currently in talks with Piranha to get a new MechWarrior made.

Crimson Skies could be next in FASA revival

crimsonskies

FASA founder Jordan Weisman has told Gamespot that Xbox flight-combat oldie Crimson Skies may be brought back to life as a result of the ongoing fortunes of his new company, Smith & Tinker.

“Most of my time is invested in [Smith & Tinker], but in the wee hours of the night, I spend time thinking about the older properties. I think Crimson Skies is something we’d love to get some energy around, and we have some devious plans – we’ll see if those materialize.”

The first FASA property to be brought back from the dead thanks to the emergence of Smith & Tinker is Mech Warrior, announced early last month.

“I wanted to start with MechWarrior, because it really struck me as the one that had the largest existing fan base and it had been the longest since a MechWarrior title was done right,” Weisman added.

MechWarrior is full reboot – screens, details, movie, AWESOME

mechwarrior2

IGN’s gone live with full details, screens, a proper movie and an interview on what has now been confirmed as a full MechWarrior reboot, and it looks very fucking cool.

The PC and 360 game is set on the planet Deshler in the year 3015, and places players in the role of Adrian Khol, a wayward nobleman who prefers partying over training and studies.

When House Kurita launches an invasion to conquer Deshler, resulting in the death of his entire family, Khol goes mental with his big robot.

We’re psyched. Watch the movie. It includes a mech with a massive skull. Good enough for us.

No date.
