Diablo III beta still on slate for September
Blizzard game director Jay Wilson said during the firm’s gamescom press conference that the Dibalo III beta is still slated for release by September. That’s the good news. The sort of bad news but still expected news? The game will be released: “When it’s ready.” Thanks, Kotaku.

Diablo III redline targeting system “not going anywhere”
Poor old Blizzard. There it is, making what’s likely to be the most successful action-RPG of all time in Diablo III and all people can do is moan about the colours, the atmosphere, the price of cheese. Next up: having red outlines around targeted monsters.
“It’s still in and it’s not going anywhere,” said lead designer Jay Wilson when DIII.net asked him if he’d had thoughts about changing the system.
“I consider it absolutely essential for target selection. We tried tons of other systems, and that’s the one that worked really well.
“The complaint we get is that it makes the monsters pop out from the world, and our response is that’s exactly what it’s supposed to do.”
No one knows when Diablo III’s releasing. And don’t push Jay on it. You might get lamped.

Diablo III lead designer says Monk could get party-boosting skills

Over on the Diablo III forums at IncGamers, part two of an interview with lead designer Jay Wilson discusses some of the class skills for the Monk, along with his armor rating, weapon skills, and whether or not it will have defensive and supportive skills.
“Most of the Monk’s skills will focus on combat skills and attacks, along with his various escape skills,” he told Diii.net, “and we talked at Blizzcon that we’re likely to put some defensive and supportive abilities on him. Possibly Auras. We’ve not done the next round of skills on him yet so we’re not exactly sure.”
As far as giving the Monk having co-op or party-boosting skills, Wilson said that bitis still under consideration.
“We definitely want to do that with one class. Whether or not it’s the Monk hasn’t yet been decided,” he said. “The Monk does seem to be the logical choice. The only reason we might not do with him is that he’s too logical.”
Loads more about the class is through the link.

Diablo III will have content edited for certain regions

Diablo III lead designer, Jay Wilson, has revealed that even though Blizzard has included parental controls in its RPG, this will not be enough to get a release in some regions. Therefore, the game will have to be edited.
“Regions like Germany and Australia, we will have to change blood if we’re going to sell there. And that’s fine,” he told Wired. “Those are the standards for those regions, and we don’t really have a problem with catering to what they need and what they want. But China’s going to be hard for us. Because a lot of the restrictions there are really… we may not be able to do them. It may not be possible.
“With our relationship with NetEase, we recently got new information about what China really wants, and it’s a lengthy list. It’s really hard for us to cater to. We’ll try. There’s no reason we wouldn’t want to go there, but there is a certain point where we’d have to redo so much of the game that it’s not viable anymore.
“We could have a lot of trouble with China, but it would be our goal to go there. We haven’t decided what regions we’re going into, obviously. It certainly would be our goal to go there, but we will struggle to go to China.”
Considering the fact that Diablo III lets you punch an enemy so hard his skeleton goes flying out of the body, we can see where China would have problem with that. China, is a non-skeleton friendly bunch.

Next Diablo III class will make players “hate” Blizzard
Speaking to VG, lead Diablo III designer Jay Wilson said that you may well be up in arms about the next class decisions Blizzard’s set to reveal for the game.
“All the barbarian players are delighted and all the necromancers hate us,”he said. “I understand, I don’t begrudge them that. I would hate me too! But what I would say is that when we announce the next class, which is quite similar to a previous class, then all those players will hate us too.
“You can’t make everybody happy, but I think when the game finally come out players will find there’s a good class for them, one they will love as much as the ones that came before,” Wilson added. “And if they don’t, I absolutely promise that in the expansions we’ll consider bringing back old classes. We just don’t want to do it with the first release. We want to establish our identity.”

Diablo III tech “really solid,” team focused on content production
Speaking in the latest Blizzard podcast, Diablo III lead designer Jay Wilson has confirmed that the game’s underlying tech is basically done, and that the team is currently focused on making content.
“A lot of the team is really production focused now and we’re generating content for the most part; a lot of the tech and underlying engine is really solid,” Wilson said.
Don’t bet on seeing the game any time soon, however.
“If we haven’t rebuilt something five times it really doesn’t deserve to be shipped,” Wilson added. “That’s pretty much our policy.”

Diablo III trashes old Diablo classes, only fishes out Barbarian
How do you improve perfection? According to Blizzard, you don’t. Speaking with Kotaku, the chilly giant revealed that, aside from the Barbarian, you’ll see neither hide nor hair of any Diablo/Diablo II classes in Blizzard’s latest jaunt through hell.
Using the Necromancer as an example, lead designer Jay Wilson explained that Blizzard is letting the class rot because it was too awesome – “a victim of his own success.” Following that line of thought, the brutish Barbarian is staying onboard because he has “room for improvement.”
Barring that, however, you’ll only find newcomers surrounding Diablo III’s camp fire – including the eerily Necromancer-esque Witchdoctor.
Petition’s on the way, we’re sure.

Blizzard has “plans beyond” Diablo III
Blizzard’s confirmed to MTV that, while Diablo III will round off the plot from the first two games, there’ll be more Diablo to come. This is probably very good news.
“We’re not saying this is the end of the Diablo universe, but we are trying to bring this storyline to a close,” said Diablo III lead designer Jay Wilson. “It’s not just Diablo III — we’ve got plans beyond.”

Diablo III designer judges fan screenshots
Diablo III designer Jay Wilson has given a professional opinion of the “fan” screens that darkened down Blizzard’s official shots to make them look “grittier.” Read in all on MTV.
In a nutshell: some of it isn’t possible, some of it may end up looking a bit like it, and most of it would mean you wouldn’t be able to see all the enemies and furniture.
Consider yourself told. Now shut up.
