MS foot-dragging on 360 MMOs is “baffling,” says Cryptic boss
Cryptic CCO Jack Emmert has described Microsoft’s apparent deadlock with developers over how MMOs are to work on Live as “baffling”.
His comments, made to VG247 in this week’s podcast, mirror those given to us by the FFXIV team in Cologne this month, which said the Square MMO was a timed PS3 exclusive partly because the publisher was in ongoing discussions with Microsoft about how it’s to work on Live.
“Microsoft’s a big company, and they have to work out all the various issues related to MMOs,” said Emmert.
“It just takes time for the big beast known as Microsoft to get moving. I really have no explanation other than that, because it’s as baffling to developers as it is to everyone else.”
Cryptic has a 360 version of Champions Online which is “ready to go,” according to the developer, but the chances of the console game releasing anywhere near its imminent PC counterpart sound distant.
“This year? I don’t know,” Emmert said of the 360 release.
“Right now we’re just talking with Microsoft. Right now the ball is firmly in their court. We’re ready to go, but until we get the go ahead from Microsoft, right now we’re sort of waiting.”
Champions Online releases for PC in both the US and Europe next week.

Champions Online: Four content updates a year, DLC plans revealed “launch day”
Soon-to-be-launched Cryptic MMO Champions Online will see a minimum of three and most likely four proper content updates every year, chief creative officer Jack Emmert has told VG247.
“I think our battle plan is four a year, but we might have to scale that down to three a year; I don’t know,” said the developer, talking in our latest podcast.
“But certainly our goal is that every three months there’s something new being added to the game.”
Emmert added that new content would be put out “very, very regularly. I think launch day, you can pretty much guarantee you’ll be soon learning exactly what we’re going to be doing for free content. We learned that it’s absolutely vital to keep stuff flowing as a very, very constant rate.”
Paid or unpaid? Both.
“We are definitely planning on doing” paid expansions, Emmert said.
“When I say four updates a year, that would be including any paid content. There will definitely be free content, but in addition.”
Champions Online hits both the US and Europe next week.

Champions Online life-subs restriction “passed down from on high,” says Emmert, offers reinstated
Following news last night that Champions Online’s lifetime and six-monthly subs offers had been pulled, Cryptic’s confirmed that both deal are now available again, completely unrestricted, until 11.59pm PST on August 31.
Cryptic’s creative director, Jack Emmert, told VG247 on the phone last night that unexpected popularity for the offers had caused the company to pull the plug.
“The business folks had a certain amount of life-time subscriptions allocated, and the popularity of the program far exceeded their anticipations, so it was passed down from on high that we had to end it,” he said.
Fear not. You are now able to spend $200 on being a superhero for the rest of your life. Quick. Get to it.
The game launches next Tuesday in the US and next Friday in Europe. You’ll be able to hear our full interview with Jack in this week’s podcast.

Champions Online sequel is possible should the game be a success

Cryptic’s Jack Emmert has said that there is a distinct possibility of a a sequel to Champions Online should the MMO go over well.
It would run in a vein similar to City of Villains, and possibly be called Nemesis Online.
“Look, if Champions is successful and people want that, heck yea. But, I think that I already have a very different idea in mind for that,” Emmert told G4. “I think in City of Villains, we were asked to make the game in about a year, and so we were kind of focused on “We gotta get this done.” So, we just took the template of City of Heroes and copied it.
“If I were to do it over again, I would create a very different type of gameplay for villain worlds.”
