Bethesda confirms round of lay-offs at id Software

qlogo-art

Bethesda has confirmed a round of lay-offs have occurred at id Software, after a tweet and NeoGAF post on the matter surfaced. Speaking with Joystiq, the firm said the lay-offs occurred through “standard business practice” as id Software “regularly evaluates staffing to ensure it has a workforce that meets the needs of the studio.” That being said, the official statement on the matter also noted id was “still recruiting and hiring qualified developers” as work on future titles at the studio “continues unabated.” [pic]

Quake removed from German index list

20111201quake

The German Government had removed classic 1996 shooter Quake from its list of indexed titles. Prior to its de-indexing, general retailers could not offer the iD Software title for sale, even through mail order. Bethesda seems to be in the process of appealing the indexing of iD Software’s back-catalogue, as Doom and Doom 2 were recently let free, too; Germany allows appeals after ten years.

Thanks, Joystiq.

Doom 3 source code available now

20111101doom3

Id, as promised, has released the source code for Doom 3. A delay was threatened when tech director John Carmack recently tweeted that lawyers for Bethesda were “skittish about the patent issue” with a trick called Carmack’s Reverse that was used in the full game, but the law, quite clearly, is an ass. It’s now available from GitHub. Get to it.

Thanks, Gamefront.

Outdated GPU drivers blamed for Rage PC issues

20110609rage

AMD has released new drivers, available on its website, in response to complaints of screen tearing, texture and performance issues with the PC version of Rage.

According to the Bethesda Blog, Id is working with Nvidia to push out a similar fix. Users are advised to wait for the Rage-specific update rather than upgrading willy-nilly.

Of particular note are those using drivers updated for the Battlefield 3 beta, which will need to be rolled back.

Rage released yesterday in the US and arrives elsewhere by the end of the week, for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Reviews have been largely delighted.

Thanks, GiantBomb.
