Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain has “enormous volume,” and as such, will take some time to complete. Creator Hideo Kojima has also explained why the game will take so long, and why he chose to split the title into both Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain segments.

Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes, the prologue to The Phantom Pain, was almost released right after Peace Walker and according to Hideo Kojima, it could have been either PSP or PS3 title.

With the FOX Engine, Metal Gear Solid 5 looks great both on current-gen systems as well as the new ones, but “great” isn’t the goal — Kojima says they want “photo-realistic graphic quality.”

Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima has made comments that allude heavily to Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain being a gameplay experience that will extend well beyond consoles. In typical fashion he wasn’t terribly specific, but he has in the past hinted at second-screen functionality.

After a half hour gameplay showing at TGS last week, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’s prologue Ground Zeroes has attracted ire from a section of fans who are worried that certain elements of gameplay, such as the introduction of regenerating health, are too far removed from the series’ previous iterations. Hideo Kojima took to Twitter to respond.

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima said at a press event at Kojima Productions’ new Los Angeles studio Thursday that one of the reasons they decided to open a new office near Hollywood was to make it easier to explore transmedia possibilities. Kojima may even already have such projects in the works, but he won’t confirm or deny that.
