SCEA has announced today that the PlayStation Network is three years old this week.
Wow. Time flies when you’re having fun.
“We are extremely proud that in just three years into its lifecycle, PlayStation 3 and the unmatched digital offerings of PlayStation Network have helped to redefine the connected home entertainment experience,” said SCEA’s Patrick Seybold. “From a tremendous lineup of blockbuster titles, to Blu-ray movies and games, to access to a library of thousands of movies, TV shows and games on the PlayStation Store, no other system on the market today delivers a more complete entertainment experience or a better value than PS3.
“With the continuing addition of new features such as Netflix and Facebook integration, highly anticipated break-out games like MAG and God of War III on the horizon, and the on-going evolution of connected experiences through PlayStation Network, we’ve only just begun scratch the surface.”
Sony said that because of the “strong consumer demand for rich, digital and connected entertainment experiences”, popularity for the service has grown as “what began as an online commerce option for games and content has evolved into an innovative entertainment network in just three short years”.
Currently, there are 17,400 TV episodes and movies for rent and purchase; 450 games for PS3 and PSP, 4,000 pieces of add-on game content and the new “minis” and the “digital comics,” section which is to be available later this year.

PS2 has turned nine years old, folks and was unleashed on the world October 26, 2000.
To celebrate, Sony has sent along some figures and information on the system that you may not have known:

- 140 million people around the world own a PS2
- The SOCOM franchise has become one of the most played of all time, with over 530 million online hours logged since the debut of SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs in 2002 equaling 60,000 years of online play
- More than 500 million software units have been sold for PS2 in the US
- More than 485 developers have developed for the platform since its launch
- By the end of this fiscal year, nearly 10,000 titles in total will be available for the system
“With nine years under its belt, the PlayStation 2 system shows no signs of slowing down and at $99 it still offers hours of fun for the whole family”, said Sony.
“The PlayStation 2 system is well on its way to delivering ten years of value to consumers and will continue to serve as a testament to the leading innovation and unbeatable entertainment the PlayStation brand provides its consumers.”
Happy Birthday, then.

As noted the US PS Blog, PlayStation 3 was launched two years ago today in America.
The machine had released the week earlier in Japan, on November 11, but unlucky Europeans would have to wait another four months for the console, which launched on March 23, 2007 on the Continent.
Lots of chest-beating through the link.
