Quantic Dream: “Games can be meaningful”

heavyrain111

Speaking in an interview with Gama, Quantic Dream co-CEO Guillaume de Fondaumiere has said that if done right, games could be “meaningful.”

He said: “I think that the most important goal for us is to show that video games can be more than just shooting, driving — that games can be meaningful.”

de Fondaumiere was talking in the interview of his hopes for the developer’s upcoming PS3 exclusive Heavy Rain, where he welcomed the coined term for the game “interactive movie.”

“The best short-form definition we found [for Heavy Rain] was ‘interactive movie,’ which is a double-edged sword quite simply because it reminds people of those games at the early ’90s when you were basically in a movie and you had the choice between going to the left or opening the door to the right — which of course Heavy Rain is absolutely not.”

Heavy Rain producer weighs in on MW2 controversy

heavyrain

Quantic Dream’s Guillaume de Fondaumiere has told MTV that the controversial airport scene in Modern Warfare 2 should not be treated any different than scenes from a movie.

“My take on it is very simple. I don’t see any reason why video games should be treated differently than movies, for instance,” he told MTV. “I think that we should leave game creators free of expressing their vision as they see fit. I think the guys at Infinity Ward had something very precise in mind when they did this scene.

“The real danger for me is, when you put out such a scene out of context. I can take any movie and take a sequence and make up a story and it will look like something that’s amoral or that crosses the line. This is most of the time what happens in video games [in the media].”

Heavy Rain will feature cultural censorship

heavyrain111

Speaking in the gameplay demo that was released for Japan on Monday, executive producer on Heavy Rain Guillaume de Fondaumiere has said that the game will undergo cultural censorship in some regions to get rid of stuff which will be alright in some areas, but not in others.

He does insist that the game will essentially be the same though everywhere, saying the changes that will be implemented won’t make a “big difference”.

“We wanted to have pretty much the same game everywhere, be it Europe, in the United States, or in Japan, of course, with slight adaptions — for instance, the Japanese version,” says de Fondaumiere.

“But I don’t think the changes we made will make a big difference, so that those are real modular things.”

Game is released next year. Thanks, D’Toid.

Heavy Rain delayed to get “its own release window”, says Quantic Dream

heavyrain

Quantic Dream’s Guillaume de Fondaumiere has stated that the reason Heavy Rain was delayed into 2010 was so it could get its very own release window.

“The first and most important reason [for the delay] was the fact that I don’t think that such an innovative game like Heavy Rain and a new franchise should be released at the end of the year in the crowded period when everyone’s releasing there games,” de Fondaumiere told CVG.

“A game like Heavy Rain needs space, needs to be explained and shown. At the end of the year, people can’t afford to buy all those games so we wanted to give Heavy Rain the chance to have its own release window, and for us to really talk about it so people really understand it.”

Quantic Dream: Heavy Rain QTE criticisms are “unfair”

heavyraina

Quantic Dream co-CEO Guillaume de Fondaumiere has said to CVG that any criticisms towards the Quick Time Events in Heavy Rain are unfair. He was speaking after the game made an appearance at GamesCom two weeks ago.

“I think they’re unfair. I think the QTE’s we have in our game are very different from the ones even in Shenmue, which I also think was a great game,” claimed de Fondaumiere.

He also admitted that the game was one of the more interactive games in many years.

“All the trailers – that’s me playing it. Everything we’ve shown so far, each screen, is all actions that you actually do. So it’s one of the more interactive games that I’ve seen in many years.”

Heavy Rain pushed into 2010 by “crowded” Christmas

heavyraina

Heavy Rain will release in 2010 to give it “space to live” away from the hectic Christmas retail period, Quantic Dream co-CEO Guillaume de Fondaumiere has told GI.

“Purely from my perspective, most publishers today realise that it’s not ideal to release a new IP or a new genre just before Christmas,” he said.

“It’s a very crowded place to be, and certain games need more space to live their life. Everybody at working on the project, both at Quantic and Sony, believe this is the right time.”

The thriller’s alpha was delivered on April 15, the developer added, “on time, on budget”.

Expect a better look from Gamescom in Cologne next month.
