GREE buys iOS developer Funzio for $210 million

GREE has bought iOS developer Funzio for $210 million. The studio said it shared the vision of the Japanese social games company in that it can exist in “a mobile world where people can play together wherever and whenever they are,” according to Funzio CEO Ken Chiu.

Assassin’s Creed coming to Gree

Ubisoft’s announced it’s to bring an all-new Assassin’s Creed installment to social gaming platform Gree in Q2 this year. The game, which will come in English and Japanese with “other languages to follow,” will be “a new and innovative social gaming experience for the franchise.”

No more details were given on the game.

Japanese social games firm GREE sets up shop in San Francisco

GREE is setting up shop in San Francisco in order to facilitate the launch of its global platform during Q4 this year. The Japanese network operator, and social and mobile game developer, plans to use the time before launch to build relationships with local developers and publishers. Titles are to be offered through the firm’s existing service, along with that of OpenFeint – its most recent acquisition – and the first two will go live next month. It’s Japanese service boasts 190 million registered users, and it expects to its fiscal year-end sale to reach $2.1-$2.5 billion. Currently, the service offers over 7,500 games from more than 20,000 partners, and has its own internal development studio. Other offices for the firm are located in Beijing, Dubai, London, Sao Paulo, and Seoul. Thanks, Gamasutra.

Square’s Rebellion Overdrive is a new episode for GREE’s Knights of the Crystals

Siliconera has gotten to the bottom of a Square trademark it uncovered this morning called Rebellion Overdrive, and turns out its a new episode for the Japanese, GREE social game, Knights of the Crystals. The North American version on Facebook ends on February 29. So much for hoping it was one of Square’s Unreal Engine 3 games.

Inafune’s first game is a mobile titled The Island of Dr. Momo

Keji Inafune has announced his first game since leaving Capcom, and it’s called The Island of Dr. Momo. The game was announced during a press conference held by GREE, Index, Atlus’ parent company and Inafune’s Comcept. The Island of Dr. Momo is a social game for GREE mobile’s social gaming service. You play as mad scientist who loves cute things, and so you combine critters together to “make the world’s cutest thing.” The game will be playable on iOS and Android devices this fall, and will make use of microtransactions like most GREE games.
