Rockstar has announced the Rockstar Legacy Collection of PSP games.

Starting today, Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition, Midnight Club: L.A. Remix and Manhunt 2 will be available for digital download from PSN for PSP.

An official Rockstar-branded storefront on PSN will also launch on October 22, and it will offer new and Legacy Rockstar titles for the PSP system, including Beaterator, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, and The Warriors, all available for digital download.

Rockstar’s put live nine new screenshots of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for the PSP.

The game is out on October 20 in the US, October 23 in the UK and Europe.

Original Story: Rockstar’s announced it’s bringing Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars to the iPhone and iPod Touch.

It was previously released on the Nintendo DS, with a release on the PSP due this autumn.

“Chinatown Wars is a perfect match for the iPhone and iPod touch. We are very excited to bring this incredibly ambitious version of Liberty City, with this level of detail and immersive gameplay on Apple’s new gaming platforms,” said Rockstar president, Sam Houser.

Meanwhile, Rockstar also announced it’s bringing Beaterator to the Apps store.

“The simple, pick-up-and-play nature of Beaterator lends itself so well to the Apple platforms. We are happy to deliver an application that allows for such unprecedented sharing and ease-of-use.”

It was also appearing on the PSP as an exclusive to the system, and is in fact due for release next month.

No dates yet on either apps.

Rockstar’s released the first shots of the PSP version of Chinatown Wars – get them here.

The new version, according to Rockstar, includes “upscaled widescreen graphics, enhanced lighting and animation and including all new story missions”.

These are presumably the beginning of the “lots of announcements” expected from the publisher today.

The handheld GTA title releases for PSP on October 20.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars players who are a member of the Rockstar Social Club will have a chance to receive the rare Bulletproof Hellenbach vehicle.

The in-game content will be available for limited time starting May 1, so if you want one, this is what you have to do:

1. Become a registered Social Club member before 11:59 PM ET on May 7th 2009 (Thursday)
2. Link your Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars Nintendo DS Friend Code to your Social Club account before 11:59 PM ET on May 7th 2009 (Thursday)
3. Sync your stats anytime after your Friend Code is linked.

Your car will then be available at the Auto Merchant in BOABO, and is the last car shown on the dealer’s list.

Michael Pachter has told Gamasutra that a mature audience just isn’t “there” for Nintendo DS.

Citing the lower than expected sale for Chinatown Wars, Pachter estimated that between the US and Europe, only 10 percent of the DS user base are males age 18-30. This is the target audience for Mature rated games.

The analyst feels that this has a lot to do with the way Nintendo advertises its product.

“There may be a lot of ‘adults’ who own DS hardware, but look at the ads: America Ferrera, Liv Tyler, Beyonce, and Carrie Underwood are all targeted at teen girls or women,” said Pachter. “It’s pretty clear to me that the ‘older’ DS demographic is largely female, and that they play Brain Training, Nintendogs, and Rhythm Heaven, not GTA: Chinatown Wars.”

Pachter believes that this is not because the market is tired of the GTA franchise, only that it would rather play the series on a console.

“I do not believe the market is tired of the GTA franchise,” Pachter says. “The other dimension is that the 10 percent of DS owners probably own a console as well, and if they’re inclined to buy GTA, they would probably do it on a console first. Few people buy the same game on the DS and on a console.”

Take-Two plans to continue it’s advertising support of the game, to try to raise awareness for the franchise on DS. Pachter, however, feels the company may be wasting its time.

“We can’t say that Take-Two made a bad game or marketed it poorly,” he said. “Instead, they created an M-rated game for a largely E and T audience, and those DS owners who are legally allowed to buy an M-rated game are not particularly interested.

“There’s no point making games for an audience that is not there.”

A photo posted over on NeoGAF shows a German version of GTA: Chinatown Wars with an amazingly large warning label on the package.

The USK label underneath the big red sticker apparently wasn’t enough.

Germany has shown renewed vigor over violent and mature videogames since the Winnenden school shooting earlier in the month.

Rockstar’s released a new gameplay clip from Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, which will be land March 17 on DS.

The clip, “Dealing and Delivering,” gives players a look at what moving goods around Liberty City will be like for protagonist Huang Lee after hitting the streets on the order of his uncle, Wu ‘Kenny’ Lee.

Kotaku’s posted a proper trailer for GTA: Chinatown Wars, and it looks as good as you’d expect.

There’s a bit of gameplay in there, and a whole lot of art. Essential stuff for the DS-loving hardcore out there.

Never one to shy away from topical humor, Rockstar has put out a new Chinatown Wars promo poking fun at the recent bank bailout, saying that only “corporate criminals” get handouts.

Rockstar said today that Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will get a sales boost when DSi hits stores.

Speaking with MCV, Rockstar UK boss Neil Stephens said that the general retail buzz around the new Nintendo handheld will directly influence sales of the game, even though it is to be released two weeks prior to the system’s launch.

“The launch of a new piece of hardware into the DS family will garner a new level of buzz and get some more hype going for the system”, he said.

“I think anyone releasing high profile titles on the DS will definitely benefit from that. We also think there is the potential to attract lots of new owners into the market, particularly from our fans who may have played our GTA titles on the PSP.”

Game hits stores on March 20.

MTV Multiplayer has got the lowdown on just how the drug dealing in Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will work.

Basically, it’s just a way to make some extra dosh on the side, innit.

“Huang Lee [your character]will not be a crime boss or top-earning mercenary,” the Rockstar rep said. “He’ll make peanuts for his anti-social efforts. So he’ll need to make extra money to buy extra weapons and who knows what else. Dealing is one such way to make the money.”

Drug prices will vary across town, but Rockstar ensured that as places to buy and sell are abundant, you can take care of business en route to a mission rather than having to drive back and forth across town every time you wanna make a quick buck.

February’s Edge magazine also reveals a rather excellent, innovative gameplay twist to the proceedings:

Chinatown Wars’ Dope Wars-like trading minigame is lent greater depth by an economy that’s affected by CCTV cameras. When destroyed, these cameras are the equivalent of ‘”GTA IV”’s pigeons or “GTA III”’s hidden packages, but have a distinct effect on the economics of the area they’re in. Prices tumble in regions where cameras have been taken out, while remaining higher where they still work, though the risks of being caught in the act of dealing are also greater.

All sounds very good indeed.

GTA: Chinatown Wars is out March 17 in the US with Europe getting it three days later.

Rockstar put out a bunch of new GTA DS shots this afternoon, and it’s all looking like serious business to us.

According to Edge, Rockstar has announced that bar a little bit more spit and polish, work on Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars is complete.

In what is a full hands on with the open world DS game, Edge writes:

Central to life on the streets is player character Huang Lee’s PDA, which is displayed on the DS touchscreen. Taking the place of GTAIV’s mobile phone, it shows the minimap, which is identical to GTAIV’s, even down to the way the sat-nav works. It’s also where you access such staples as emails, the main map and now Ammu-nation. The weapons chain is no longer found scattered around the city – it’s now an online store that delivers goods direct to your safehouse.
