A new team, Grasshopper Social Network Service, has been created to work on a joint venture between DeNA and Grasshopper Manufacture for Japan’s Mobage platform.

“Our new venture with DeNA will allow us to explore creative ways to bring Grasshopper Manufacture’s universe to a new world of players,” said Goichi Suda, CEO of Grasshopper Manufacture. “Mobage’s world-class entertainment network and the power of social mobile games will unlock new types of experiences for our fans.”

A similar collaboration between Square Enix and DeNA was recently announced and will see a game based on the Final Fantasy IP hit the Mobage platform.

There’s no word on Western release for either project as yet.

Thanks, Destructoid.

Grasshopper boss Goichi Suda has said that an actual, potential collaboration between his studio and Kojima Productions on a projet is merely about timing, noting the busyness right now between KP and Hideo Kojima.

But he noted he’d definitely be up for it.

“I think it’s really all about timing,” Suda 51 told Joystiq at Tokyo Game Show. “Kojima is busy, Kojima Productions is busy, but if we have the right moment, sure.”

Suda and Kojima have been working on a radio play involving Snatcher, known as Sdatcher, but Joystiq’s wording of its question seemed to sugget an actual game.

Suda and Grasshopper are working on a multiple array of games, including Lollypop Chainsaw, Sine Mora and Diabolical Pitch, with Suda personally involved in Level 5′s Guild 01 for 3DS.

Kojima Productions is currently developing Metal Gear Solid: Rising, the HD Collections for Metal Gear Solid & Zone of the Enders and the next big game from Kojima himself.

A handful of Japanese creatives have teamed up to produce Guild 01, an unusual game to be released under Level-5′s banner.

This week’s Famitsu – as reported by Andriasang – unveiled the new 3DS title, which collects together four distinct games into one package.

Each of four respected creatives will head up one game each. Later reports give more details:

Grasshopper Manufacture head Goichi Suda will contribute a shooter called Kaiho Shojo, set one century from the present. Piloting a Kaihoki – “liberation machine” – called Kamui, players take on the role of Shoko, a schoolgirl who happens to be the president, in a bid to liberate New Japan from an invading force which has control of an energy source called Shinjuu. The 11 foot winged robot is controlled by the stylus, and the game features animation by Bones.

One-time development hopeful turned comedian Yoshiyuki Hirai offers his debut game, which lets players stand on the other side of the counter in RPG weapon shops. It’s called Rental Bukiya de Omasse, and allows you to make weapons and rent them to adventurers, choosing the right one for each customer. Poor decisions see customers killed off without returning weapons, while successful matches presumably drive business up. Players are assisted by a tool called Donai Natter which passes on useful information about customer’s quests and, um, whether the local bakery is having a sale.

Yoot Saito, probably best known for the Dreamcast experience Seaman, also has a management game. This one’s called Air Porter, and it’s about baggage handling. As the airport head, your goal is to see baggage loaded and unloaded fast enough to keep planes running on time. Loading can be chained together to form combos, and if you do well, and the airport will grow, eventually attracting the patronage of Air Force One for a top score.

Finally, ex-Square Enix staffer and Vagrant Story designer Yasumi Matsuno will offer a “dark fantasy” RPG titled Crimson Shroud, his first project since joining Level-5. The player is a “chaser”, someone who locates missing people, and the story is apparently set 1,000 years before magic became common, telling the story of how it arose in the world.

More details are expected at this weekend’s Level-5 Vision event.

Grasshopper released Shadows of the Damned, via EA Partners, this past summer to critical success, but very low sales.

Goichi Suda has said the gaming concepts at Grasshopper Manufacture pretty much stem from his ideas, but when it comes to the actual execution, it varies per game.

While explaining his role at the studio to 1UP during TGS, Suda described which hat he dons for each game. For example, with Lollipop Chainsaw, he is the executive director and the idea of the game was his.

With Diabolical Pitch and Black Knight Sword, after he came up with the idea for each, he turned the games over to different teams, but offers feedback as much as he possibly can.

Sine Mora is a bit different in that Digital Reality came up with the idea, and once again, Suda offers feedback.

“Black Knight Story’s original concept is reflected pretty heavily [in the final game],” he said. “I had this vision where the main character is a guy who hangs himself trying to die, but he can’t die and he actually gets possessed by this spiritual thing.

“So I actually wanted him to explore the world to find the three rarest foods in the world, but that doesn’t happen in the game. That was resisted strongly by the director…so that didn’t happen, but other than that, it’s pretty close to the original concept.

“Diabolical Pitch, I think it’s kept pretty close to the original idea. You know Randy Johnson, right? I really like him. I originally wanted Randy Johnson to do the motion capture, and I also wanted to put this pitching style that [a legendary Japanese pitcher] had, but that didn’t really happen.

“But other than that, I think we’re pretty close to the original concept.”

Grasshopper currently has around 120 employees and the firm’s Akira Yamaoka is currently working with DeNA studio on new social titles for the firm.

Yasuhiro Wada and Yoshiro Kimura have left Grasshopper Manufacture, according to a report on Siliconera.

The site has learned, according to the post, that the two men exited the firm during August, after having joined it last year. Yasuhiro Wada, known as the creator of the Harvest Moon games took a position with Grasshopper as COO, while Yoshiro Kimura, creator of Little King’s Story, was brought on as CCO.

Both were at one time high-profile Marvelous Entertainment developers, and Wada had worked with Grasshopper head Goichi Suda in the past as a producer on No More Heroes.

When the duo joined, Suda said the move would “help us produce games in a more stable manner,” and that having these two people join Grasshopper would “make us a more sturdily-organized company, and it’ll improve our development, technical, and release skills.”

It is unclear at the moment what, if anything, Wada and Kimura were working on, but Grasshopper has quite a few titles in the pipeline such as Codename D for Kinect, Black Knight Sword, Lollipop Chainsaw, Rebuild of Evangelion: Sound Impact, and Sine Mora.

A teaser video for Grasshopper Manufacture’s PSN and XBL shooter Sine Mora has been released. Co-developed at Digital Reality and scored by former Silent Hill man Akira Yamaoka, the “diesel punk” game has plenty of floating robots with octoarms, and massive trains and planes that do things only a fantasy setting such as this would allow. While the video doesn’t show any real gameplay, it does show off enough in-game footage to give you an idea of what to expect when it is released this winter.

Speaking in an interview with Destructoid, Suda said that he was aware that he had promised NMH3 for the next Nintendo console, and said he has no plans to break hearts on the matter.

“However, I was at the Nintendo booth yesterday and today, and I actually had a chance to take the Wii U into my own hands. And as soon as I grabbed it things started swirling in my head,” he said in the video interview posted below. “I don’t know if it’s going to be one male character, it seems like maybe there’s a possibility that I may come up with some ideas.

“I’ll leave it at that for now. We’ll see what happens. Of course I can’t reveal who that guy is in my head.”

Earlier this year, Suda said he would like to make a third No More Heroes game, but that it wouldn’t “happen soon”.

Thanks, Eurogamer.

Goichi Suda has said over and over again that Shadows of the Damned is a story of rescuing your lover – but it turns out, he had a very different plan in mind before EA stepped in.

“I wrote up the story … and just as we were just about done with the game, EA was all ‘Wait a second!’” Suda told Famitsu.

EA apparently asked Suda for a simpler plot.

“It’s what they call the elevator pitch. It’s easier to get into a story if you can explain it to someone in the couple of seconds you have before the elevator you’re riding reaches its floor.

“[EA Partners head] David DeMartini asked us to remake the story into something where the hero is trying to rescue a girl that’s been kidnapped.”

Producer Shinji Mikami, famed for his work on the Resident Evil series, said the new plot is “something completely the opposite direction from what Suda was doing right when Kurayami was nearly done”.

Kurayami, the project later transformed into Shadows of the Damned, featured a gun with a monitor attached. From this screen, a female character, who evolved over the course of the game, communicated the apparently complicated Suda-esque plot.

Despite this interesting weapon, the game didn’t start as a shooter, either.

“At the start of development Kurayami was largely concentrated around hand-to-hand combat,” Suda said.

“However, Mikami talked things over with EA and we decided to introduce guns into the mix as well.”

Suda didn’t let the abrupt shifts of direction break his stride.

“Both Mikami and I fervently want this project to hit it big worldwide, so we took that feedback as a cue to rework the game,” he said.

“We decided to create the sort of love story that only we could do, and that’s when the name changed to Shadows of the Damned.”

Mikami is also tolerant of EA’s drastic late-stage intervention.

“This is the first time EA has ever really teamed up with Japanese creators, so they were probably being too hands-off with us at first,” he said.

“Looking back, we both probably should have been more direct with our opinions from the beginning.”

Shadows of the Damned is due on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in late June.

Thanks, 1UP.

Shadows of the Damned

Drops early June for PS3 and X360.

Grasshopper’s sixth game to see western release.

Developed in collaboration with Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami.

Published by EA.

Official site.

Official Twitter.

Relatively little of Grasshopper Manufacture’s past oeuvre reached us in the English-speaking world, but what did has cemented the reputation of Suda51. The self-described punk designer isn’t afraid to break conventions, build unusual mechanics, and challenge players. But the studio’s latest is a traditional action game, which counter-intuitively seems like a major departure.

“Yeah, I guess. I mean, if you look at this game as being a 3PS shooter, and the enemy style, and the basic storyline, I guess you could say it’s traditional,” Suda agreed, through a translator.

“But in reality, if you look at assets and the level design and the actual adventure of hell, it’s quite exciting, and it’s really crazier than ever, so it’s not really traditional in that sense.”

But coming on top of No More Heroes – the most recognised Grasshopper title, marketed in the West in a kind of cartoony, kid-friendly way, but deeply bizarre at its core – the dark and gory Shadows of the Damned seems completely incongruent.

“I didn’t really intend No More Heroes to be cute,” Suda explained.

“It’s actually about a killer. I wanted to describe the life of this man, but not in a very realistic way but … the behind the scenes, imaginary [world]. But it ended up being hyper reality, and using cute characters in a way.

“It’s strange. It’s not just scary. I believed we could express something really different and it worked out really well in the end.”

Global appeal

Shadows of the Damned has strong Western-market appeal on top of its Japanese heart. In fact, Suda seemed uncertain whether the game carries a strong Japanese DNA.

“Actually, the world of Hell that we’ve created for this game is the merging – the conglomerate – of the Eastern world of Hell and then the Western side of Hell, so we probably can still feel a little bit of Eastern elements in Hell,” he hazarded.

Garcia Hotspur, the game’s protagonist, is one of the industry’s few Hispanic lead characters. Suda seems to feel this was the only possible choise for the character he’d envisioned.

“I always wanted to see an Hispanic character, and when I thought of the love story with Paula, I wanted him to be passionate.

“The type of guy who goes to save their loved ones. Naturally, the name Garcia came to my mind, and … I just wanted him to be very passionate. So.”

Hispanic stereotypes usually feature Casanova-like attributes and machismo. I asked which camp Garcia falls in.

“Relatively, I would say he’s the latter, machismo type of guy – but at the same time, he has this very romantic side again. When Paula is gone, he just gets really worried. He doesn’t know what to do without her.”

Suda sounded resolute on this point, and admitted, after laughing and exclaiming, that there’s a little of himself in Gracia.

TGS 2010 announcement trailer.

“Well, I think, the terror [for] my wife, so I guess that kind of has something in common [with me]. If anything happens, no matter what, I’ll go and save her.

“So, even on the eleventh of March, when the earthquakes hit, I went straight to my wife first.”

Shadows of the Damned famously opens with something horrible happening to a woman. Thinking back on previous Grasshopper games, I was hard-pressed to remember a strong female character who wasn’t being dismembered.

“Wow,” Suda said to this challenge, before pausing thoughtfully.

“Well, this one is my first time creating a love story. I usually create our female characters to be ‘bitch’,” he said.

“This is the love love story of hell, so [the female characters] ended up having a hard time. But the next love story… maybe. We’ll probably describe the ladies a little bit [more nicely].

“Maybe a love story with Cameron Diaz?”

A wacky punk rom-com of two oddballs falling in love and stabbing each other repeatedly, I suggested – which seemed to go down well.

A unique, adult vision of Hell

Quick Q&A

If Shadows of the Damned were a film, who would have been the director?
“Robert Rodriguez.” (Desperado, Sin City)

So there’s no Quentin Tarantino vibe?
“Probably I would say Rodriguez is better.”

“The Hell that we’ve expressed in this game, it’s a different world from what we see in daily life. It’s gross. It’s bloody,” Suda said.

“But at the same time what’s scary is the demons, the enemies, [their] attack and how they look. So I guess it’s not too grotesque, it’s more the atmosphere that terrifies you. And it also attracts you at the same time.”

It’s a very different picture from EA stablemate Dante’s Inferno, which Suda seemed almost dismissive of.

“I think the Hell that they have is really mainstream and standard,” he opined.

“But I think our vision of hell is really different from theirs. It would be very interesting as you play to see the difference.

“Our version of Hell is really funny, and it’s actually closer to you than what you envision as Hell.

“It’s scary, but at the same time it’s really fun to play, so I definitely want the player to see the difference between ours and theirs.”

Hell? Funny?

“It is an adult’s game, but at the same time, we’re getting a lot of reactions and feedback, a lot of people are saying this is crazy and funny.

“You probably can see some similarities with No More Heroes, especially this game is going to be released in Australia. That means it’s not too adult,” he joked.

“It depends on the degree of difficulty, probably about 10 hours,” Suda told MeriStation. “Maybe more if you try to collect everything.”

In the game, you are basically packing a demon around in your hand so one would naturally assume the latest motion controls from Sony and Microsoft would come in handy – especially the former. However, Suda said neither will be supported in the game. This is due to the control scheme implemented, and also because the release dates announced for both Move and Kinect “influenced,” the developer’s decision.

Grasshopper does have a Kinect game in the works though, as we all know called Codename D, which uses Kinect; therefore, the studio is not adverse to motion controls. Plus, No More Heroes: Hero’s Paradise was released on PS3 in Japan with Move support and is slated for release in the US this summer.

Shadows of the Damned is set to release on June 21 on PS3 and Xbox 360, while Codename D

The incomparable Goichi Suda has said he’s not the only one pushing the boundaries with new game design, citing Dead Space 2 as an example.

IGN suggested the No More Heroes, Killer 7 and Shadows of the Damned designer was less risk-averse than the majority of designers, but Suda wasn’t hearing any of it.

“Really? Well, when I played Dead Space 2 for example, I was kind of surprised!” he countered.

“I thought, ‘How could they do this?’ I thought there were so many creators who are very adventurous. I think creators who take risks, create really edgy games – they get a lot of respect for that from the players.”

The Grasshopper Manufacture head once more invoked punk culture – singling out The Smiths – as a strong influence on his unique work.

“I write the stories myself and I think of design when I write. In that sense, you get the punk style,” he said.

“And I always think about making people laugh and providing shock elements to it too.”

Suda’s next game is Shadows of the Damned, due through EA on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on June 7.

Famitsu, via Andriasang, reports Suda mentioned the possibility at a Grasshopper charity initiative yesterday.

“Although it won’t happen soon, I’d like to do it at some point,” the designer said, and to colleagues on stage, “Let’s make it together.”

Suda has said in the past that further entries in the series will not be released for the Wii, and that while he didn’t originally envision sequels, the first game’s sales convinced him to have another go.

The first No More Heroes and its sequel, 2010′s Desperate Struggle, were both produced for the Wii and published outside Japan by Rising Star and Ubisoft. Both games scored well with critics and sold surprisingly well given their kookiness. A PlayStation 3 revamp of the first game, with the subtitle Heroes Paradise, is expected to release from Konami in several Western territories soon.

“It’s not just me who’s crazy,” Suda protested, speaking to Destructoid.

“Our staff members are crazy too.

“For example, art director Masumo – he’s crazy also. So he comes up with all sorts of crazy ideas.

“And also we have concept artists from Poland… We have a lot of staff members who love punk style, and they want to create a punk rock style game.”

Suda said the the game’s design “employed the style of Eastern European punk” and was inspired by his observation that “you don’t see too many [games set] in Hell”.

Shadows of the Damned is a multiplatform collaboration between Suda’s Grasshopper and Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, to be published by EA. Nathan had a look at it at GDC.

Spicy Horse’s Alice: Madness Returns, the sequel to cult favourite American McGee’s Alice, will hit PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on June 14.

Shadows of the Damned, the name game from Goichi Suda’s Grasshopper studio, will land on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on June 7.

The latter is an action horror collaboration between the eccentric Suda and Shinji Mikami of Resident Evil, Devil may Cry and Vanquish fame.

Presumably these dates are for the US only; stay tuned for local equivalents.

Both announcements were made during EA’s GDC event.

Goichi Suda has give out a couple small details on his Kinect title Codemane D to Famitsu, and when we say small, we’re not kidding.

In the magazine, Suda and other developers chat to the magazine about creating games for Kinect, which to Suda, it means freedom “for the player, freedom of hands has the meaning of greater freedom and openness”, and for Grasshopper Manufacture, ” “a game design that reduces burden”.

That’s all well and good Suda, but what about Codename D?

Not much really. He revealed the action game was set in an amusement park where strange and atrocious creatures reside. That much we knew from TGS. However, this bit is a bit fresh: “Using Kinect, you become the controller and face off against enemies, clearing missions in the hopes of restoring your lost self.”

“It’s a no gun, no sword action game,” reiterated Suda. “It’s a game that will let you experience the invigorating feel that can be had because of Kinect.”

It sure sounds interesting enough, but how are we supposed to fight men with Tiger heads without a gun or sword? Using our fists and wits? Possibly. We’ll find out sooner or later.

Codename D is expected to be released next year as an Xbox 360-exclusive.

Thanks, Andriasang.

Shinji Mikami will continue to be the producer on Shadows of the Damned despite the buyout last week of his new studio Tango Gameworks by ZeniMax, VG247 can reveal.

Mikami will continue alongside director Goichi Suda and audio director Akira Yamaoka at Grasshopper Manufacture on the EA Partners-published horror, even though Tango, founded by the Resident Evil creator, was bought by the parent of Bethesda last week.

“Shinji will serve as creative lead on the games developed at Tango Gamework and will fulfil his remaining obligations to Grasshopper pursuant to their prior agreement,” a Bethesda rep told us.

Mikami recently served as director of OTT Platinum action title Vanquish.

Shadows of the Damned was finally revealed at Tokyo Game Show back in September following a previous announcement of the collaboration in 2008.

It will release next summer for PS3 and 360. Watch the short Halloween trailer for it here.

ZeniMax announced the buyout of Tango Gameworks last week, its third accqusation following id Software and Arkane Studios.

It isn’t yet known what its currently working on, but artwork that was outed earlier today from the developer’s blog may point as an indicator.

Grasshopper Manufacture’s Goichi Suda has said Shadows of the Damned was originally planned for not only PS3 and Xbox 360, but PC and Wii as well.

Speaking in a TGS interview, Suda said he couldn’t comment on why the game would be skipping PC and Wii or about how the game’s tech would’ve worked on Wii – considering it uses Unreal Engine 3.

Suda did reveal that the game, originally dubbed a horror title, had changed over the two years it’s been in development, and the reason for this was that action just seemed the better choice.

“As we developed the game, we found that it would be a lot better with action elements,” he said. “Garcia, the character, is very strong and cool, so we thought we should probably switch to become more of an action game.”

Suda also said the game was still on schedule and and had suffered no internal delays.

Get caught up on everything Shadows of the Damned through here.

It’s out during summer 2011 for PS3 and Xbox 360.

Cologne’s so last week, darlin’. It’s all Tokyo from here on out.

EA Partners boss David DeMartini has hinted we may see a reveal of the horror collaboration between Goichi Suda and Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami at Tokyo Game Show next month.

DeMartini said Suda and Mikami have total freedom to make the game as they see fit.

“We’ve allowed [Suda] the opportunity to fully explore his creativity,” he told Eurogamer.

“The key thing is not for us to tone down Suda or try and westernise Suda, but to try and make sure the game gets broad enough exposure that more people appreciate it.”

When asked by the site if a Japanese reveal in September was likely and made sense, DeMartini only said: “Yes”.

As for Suda, all he said to EG at an event in Cologne last Wednesday, where he announced his new PSN and XBLA title Sine Mora, was this:

“Don’t worry. It’ll come soon.”

Does next month sound soon enough, Goichi?

“I’m not sure. But of course, please come to Tokyo.”

The project between Suda and Mikami was announced in 2008. EA confirmed it was a PS360 and PC title at the time, although DeMartini only confirmed to EG it was a PS3 and 360 game.

EA’s hosting a Tokyo showcase before TGS begins, where new games are expected to be announced.

That sound you hear is two and two being put together.

Some of the biggest name names in Japanese games development have gone on the record about how 3DS is a “perfect example,” according to Capcom’s Keiji Inafune, of the “three things videogames need to be successful.”

Here’s the lot, all taken from the next issue of Famitsu. Sounds as though 3DS is going to be a ‘bit popular’ with the Japanese development community:

Atsushi Inaba (Bayonetta, MadWorld) “I’m being struck with the intense desire to make something on it. It’s the same sort of excitement I had when I first saw the Wii and DS in Nintendo’s office, but now it’s at a whole new level. This may the first time in the industry where the terms ‘next generation’ and ‘personal dream’ were so appropriate. I’d gladly throw away everything else for a shot at touching the 3DS.”

Keiji Inafune (Mega-Man, Dead Rising) “Video games need three things to be successful: a concept, a technology platform, and good marketing. The Nintendo 3DS is a perfect example of those three things bundled into one.”

Hideki Kamiya (Okami, Bayonetta) “3D on a large screen has an impact on you and gets you that much closer to the game or movie you’re watching, but 3D on the 3DS’s smaller screen is interesting in its own right. Instead of feeling like you’re ‘really there,’ you feel like it’s ‘really in the palm of your hand,’ so to speak. Having these dynamic home 3D titles is great and all, but personally, I want to take a different approach and make games that take advantage of what a 3D portable has to offer.”

Hiroyuki Kobayashi (Resident Evil 5, Devil May Cry) “Our own Resident Evil was shown on the show floor and was well received, but when I saw Metal Gear, I felt the new potential of the 3DS. I’d like to make something.”

Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear, Metal Gear Solid) “I wear glasses, so I’m happy that 3D glasses are not needed. I directed the E3 demo. It was based off Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater, but the backgrounds and character modeling were all redone in high polygon. It’s not finalized, but we’re thinking about CO-OPs and other things — elements fitting of a 3D and portable game machine.”

Toshihiro Nagoshi (Super Monkey Ball, Yakuza) “Nintendo has been re-examining the concept of game consoles as ‘toys’ ever since the Wii, and I think the 3DS is the final result of those efforts. If you believe that gamers will demand more social features and immersiveness in their portable single-player or multiplayer experiences, then Nintendo certainly has that covered with the 3DS’s Wi-Fi and 3D features. There’s a lot of ideas I’d like to work with.”

Yoshinori Ono (Street Fighter IV, Super Street Fighter IV) “We’d like to put in some ideas that make effective use of the portability.”

Goichi Suda (No More Heroes, Killer 7) “It really makes me feel the speed at which the history of video games is unfolding — like, ‘We’ve really made it this far, huh?’ You have a living, breathing world you can touch right in your hands. I think we’ve finally gone from an era of constructing virtual worlds from pixels to one where the world is truly, honestly there. If I had to sum up the sort of game I’d like to make, I would simply call it ‘the next game,’ because the 3DS marks the arrival of the ‘next platform.’”

Shu Takami (Phoenix Wright, Ghost Trick) “As a creator, I feel that a new challenge has started… I’d like to show a mystery in a 3D space.”

3DS will release worldwide before the end of March next year.
