gears22b

Remember how the Doom movie was sort of about Doom, but not really? This is probably going to be kind of like that. But worse.

Or better, depending on your level of loathing for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Movies: Gears of War producer chats about his vision

gearsofwar2a10

Gears of War film producer, Wyck Godfrey, has told Making Of that he would like to tell the story of Emergence Day instead of just creating a movie full of battle, bullets, and macho muscle men.

“We went to the guys that created the game and just sort of made our pitch about how we’re going to put it together,” he said. “Right now we’re working with Len Wiseman on it at Legendary and New Line.

“The hard part is to make it into something that doesn’t feel like a world torn asunder and people just in battle. You gotta figure out — I think we really want to focus on the idea of a world that’s running well and then its Emergence Day.

“Kind of make it impactful and immediate and the survival of those 48 hours, as people survive Emergence Day – more like Cloverfield or something like that.”

Sounds cool. Watch the video through the link.

Microsoft beefing up Natal team, 343 Industries; looking for lead on Gears of War, Shadow Complex

shadowcomplex

Hey EA cast-aways, paddle your cardboard boxes in Microsoft’s direction, because the console powerhouse recently posted a heaping helping of job vacancies.

More specifically, Microsoft’s looking for 54 fresh faces, most of whom will join either 343 Industries or the Project Natal team.

Interestingly, the company’s also hoping to scare up a lead producer to “work with an experienced team at MGS and the world-class developers at Epic to drive the success of Gears of War and Shadow Complex in the highly competitive and fascinating world of interactive entertainment.”

And Shadow Complex? But that game’s already out! Surely they’re not suggesting a… sequel? Why, that’s practically unheard of in the videogame industry!

Thanks, Develop.

Gears of War 2 triple XP event starts today

gearsofwar2a10

Epic has announced a Gears of War 2 triple XP event starting today and running through Monday, November 16.

That’s nine days there, folks.

Additionally, players will be able to play in the new tactical mode across all multiplayer games which has increased weapon damage and reduced ammo counts along with increasing “down-but-not-out” health for revives.

Public Horde’s difficulty will be “bumped to hardcore”, and playlists can also include individual game types.

Brink single-player to “compete” with “Halo, Call of Duty, Gears”

brink2

Brink’s single-player will be comparible in size – and quality, from what we saw of it today – to the biggest names in the action business, Splash Damage boss Paul Wedgwood said in his EG Expo session this afternoon.

When asked how long the game’s story would be, the developer said: “In terms of unique gameplay, we’re still kind of nailing exactly what that’s going to be, but it’s certainly going to compete with other big triple A shooters, so if you think of things like Halo, Call of Duty, Gears, that sort of thing: it’ll be along the same lines.”

Wedgwood added that the shooter will have much replay value and backstory.

“A big goal for us is to make the game really, really playable. In the same way you have a racing game, you go through the story mode but there’s still a hell of a lot more to still unlock and play and Achievements and things to do,” he said.

“We’re doing that a lot with our environment design… At the centre of the map I just played through there’s a huge ship called Hope, which is an old chemical ship, and there’s a whole backstory to that ship. And the more you play that map and the more you play through the environments you become more aware of its backstory and everything that’s going on.

“There’s a definite a reward for exploration rather than just playing through the game once.”

Brink’s out for PC, PS3 and 360 next spring.

Mark Rein never said making games for Wii was a “waste”

markrein1b

Mark Rein has clarified to VG247 his stance on making games for Wii, stating that Silicon Valley Insider misquoted his remarks regarding the system during his interview with IndustryGamers.

According to Rein, he never said nor implied that designing games for Wii was a waste, just that it’s not Epic’s specialty.

“The kind of games we make just would not work well on Wii,” he told VG247. “With our high-end engine, making a game work on Wii would spread our resources too thin and cause us to lose focus.

“Hardcore games have been hit or miss on Wii. Some have done well, some have not and we would not expect Gears or any of our games to sell well on the system. Games like Madden are great, especially since the developer designed a user interface specifically for Wii, but again, doing something like that would take up resources we are using to make other titles.

“Again, I never said making games for Wii was a waste. There are some great games for it, but it’s just not for us.”

Here’s a link to the original post, which has been fixed to accommodate this new information.

Silicon Valley Insider has also updated its original post.

Epic’s Mark Rein says making games for Wii would spread recourses too thin [Update]

gears2art

Mark Rein has said that despite having over 50 million users, Epic won’t be making games for Wii any time soon.

According to his interview with IndustryGamers that has been quoted to death, the firm would have to scale down Unreal to even try to accomplish such a feat. Therefore, it’s just not worth it.

“If you stretch something too thin, it becomes very thin,” he said. “How do you support that? We don’t make games for that platform because we don’t see a market for the kinds of games we make – let’s be honest.

He goes on to say that if Nintendo came out with a system with more processing capabilities, it might be a go, but at present, developers that have tried to simplify games for the console have garnered nothing but flops.

More over on Silicon Valley Insider.

Update: Mark Rein has contacted VG247 and explained that the article on SVI misquoted his response to questions regarding Wii with IndustryGamers. We have posted our conversation with him here.
