GameStop shares drop 6% after Xbox 720 anti-used game report
GameStop stock has taken a tumble following a report claiming the next-gen Xbox will tether games to individual consoles, effectively biting into the used game market. Shares prices had dropped a slow as $23.75 over the course of the day but as of close of business on the East Coast had recovered slightly to end up at $25.20. That’s a 6% drop, apparently. Used game sales accounted for 48% of the retailer’s gross profits in 2012, and it takes a smacking every time this rumour arises.
Thanks, CVG.

Metro: Last Light pulled from GameStop’s digital store front
Metro: Last Light has been pulled from GameStop’s digital store front, Impulse. The firm’s VP Matt Hodges told Gamespot the move was to protect consumers in the wake of THQ’s financial issues and “uncertainty of delivery.” Customers can no longer pre-purchase the game digitally, and those who have already done so, can contact GameStop customer service for a refund. Physical pre-orders remain available, as customers can always shift the pre-order over for another game through the retailer. However, it’s unknown at press time if this option will be pulled as well in the future.

GameStop reports 15.6% drop in used software sales, digital sector up 40%
GameStop posted a 4.6% drop in sales for the nine weeks ending December 29, with global sales reaching $2.88 billion. Year-over-year sales declined 4.4 %, with US sales down 3.5% over the year prior, with international sales falling 6.4%. Hardware sales were down by 2.7% despite Wii U being around for the holidays and moving 320,000 units. New software sales fell 5.1%, while pre-owned software fell by 15.6%, a figure GameStop blamed on limited inventory “due to fewer new titles released throughout 2012 and less promotional activity negatively impacted sales compared to last year”. Digital sales, however, were up 40% year-over-year, and the firm’s global e-commerce sales were up 20.5%. Thanks, MCV.
