Rebellion head and co-founder Jason Kingsley has responded to GameSpy’s sudden server shutdown. Rebellion’s Sniper Elite servers have been canned in the wave of closures, and Kingsley has spoke out on the matter after seeing waves of his fans unable to play online without any warning. The new owners of Gamespy, Glu, have pulled the plug on servers attached to older games such as Neverwinter Nights, Sniper Elite, and Star Wars: Battlefront.

GameSpy has gone live with the first part of a 101 Free Games of 2012 feature. RPG, adventure and strategy games are offered in this initial round up, with puzzle and arcade due tomorrow; sidescrollers, platformers, versus battlers and WTF will follow. It’s also got links to previous year’s offerings, courtesy of recently-adopted sister site 1UP, resulting in a whopping number of freebies. IGN’s launched Direct2Game, an e-commerce solution that will allow developers and publishers to sell add-on content through in-game stores. The service will feature stuff like instant messaging, friend lists and matchmaking capabilities, as well as being able to sell direct to gamers.
