Ueda: “This generation is about expressing ideas”
Speaking in the latest Famitsu (via 1Up), Team ICO head Fumito Ueda has said that the current generation of consoles is “about expressing ideas”.
Ueda, who is creating The Last Guardian for the PlayStation 3 currently, said:
“As a creator, technical skill is important, but I really feel like this generation is about expressing ideas, about what you do with the technology.
“I also got the impression that, instead of talking about what makes games innovative and so on, a lot of companies were pushing Western titles hard, positioning them as a new ‘genre’ for gamers to try out.”
He also admitted he was looking forward to Modern Warfare 2.
“It’s one of the few games, I think, that conjures up what’s going outside of the picture in your mind as well. I feel a serious sublime beauty in all of Infinity Ward’s FPSes.”

Ueda: “I have an interest in making first-person games”
Fumito Ueda has revealed that he has an “interest” in possibly making first-person games.
“I have an interest in making first-person games”, the Team ICO boss said in an interview at TGS with G4.
He also admitted a love for one First-Person Shooter in particular: Valve’s Half-Life 2.
“There was variation in terms locations. and also the way of storytelling in the game. Usually, you have to incorporate storytelling with constraints, but the way they [Valve] implemented constraints was something different that I enjoyed, compared to other games.”

Ueda: ICO/Shadow of the Colossus Collection meeting due this week
Fumito Ueda has revealed to Kotaku that the possibillty of an ICO/Shadow of the Colossus collection will be raised at a meeting to be held this week.
The Team ICO boss did stress an interest in the possibillty of an collection earlier, but with this news, the dream could become a reality soon.
“I do have an interest in that. Next week, I’ll have a meeting [about the possibility] … But it might not be so easy, because, with both titles we really stretched the limits of the PS2. It’s complex. So it’s not such an easy transfer to the PS3. But I want to discuss it.”
Demands of a Team ICO collection to prepare for The Last Guardian comes as SCEA announced the God of War Collection a couple of weeks back.

Ueda: E.T. an inspiration for The Last Guardian
Fumito Ueda has said in an interview with Dengeki that he cites E.T. as an inspiration for The Last Guardian.
“I have many obviously. To name two, E.T. and My Neighbour Totoro. We’ve also looked at the charm and qualities of different animals, but not only that – we’ve focused on the wild behaviour of these animals as well,” said the Team ICO boss.
He also mentioned that the trailer was based on Toriko specfically, and how natural his animations and expressions are.
“The natural expressions of an animal. With Shadow of the Colossus and its console, PlayStation 2, we were limited as to what we could achieve. We had to cut out an incredible volume of information. Now we don’t have to do that anymore.
Everything’s expressed naturally, even the movement of the eyes. If the object of attention moves, so do the eyes of the characters following it. We’re also able to express for the first time, thanks to the new hardware, the ferocious behaviour of wild animals. I hope we did a good job on that.”

Ueda hopes to see Last Guardian EU/JP sim-ship, Trico leak was “slightly disappointing”
Team ICO boss Fumito Ueda has revealed that he would “hope” to see a simultaneous release between Europe and Japan for The Last Guardian.
“I hope to see that, yes,” said Ueda to Eurogamer on the sim-ship.
He also revealed it was “slightly disappointing” to see the internal Project Trico video leak back in May, just before E3.
“Yes, it was slightly disappointing. Everybody was working so hard to make that trailer for E3, staying up the whole night – then the next day it was leaked, and everybody was so surprised.”

Ueda would like to see a ICO and Shadow of the Colossus bundle for PS3

Fumito Ueda has told 1UP that he would like to see ICO and Shadow of the Colossus bundled together for PS3, a la the God of War Collection.
“I always thought they were designed for PS2 and should stay there, he told the site. “But lately, I’ve been thinking it would be nice to provide the games to other platforms to reach more users.”
One can dream, we suppose. Start yelling about it and maybe it will happen.

The Last Guardian: Ueda explains reasoning behind Torico’s appearance

Fumito Ueda has elaborated a bit more on Torico, the creature in The Last Guardian, and Eurogamer was lucky enough to be the site he explained it to, plus get some screens out of the deal.
Turns out, Ueda wanted the animal to be both cute and fit in well with the game’s design.
“When we came up with this animal, we wanted to make an attractive and cute kind of character. We also created this design to match up with and comply with the game design itself,” he said. “So that’s how we decided on the size, the quality of the character and its physical capabilities – it was about fitting with the game design.
“We ended up having this animal which was much closer in style to the cat, but we also had some other options – a dog-type of cat and also a camel-type character.”
Since you can’t control Torico directly, you use food or objects to get the animal to so what’s necessary. Ueda explained, that these are thrown “to a place where you wouldn’t be able to go in normal circumstances.”
Ueda also said that the team is hoping for a simultaneous release in both Europe and Japan.

Fumito Ueda not impressed by GTA IV and Mario Galaxy

Ico and Shadow of the Colossus creator Fumito Ueda stated — in an interview with LEVEL (translated by neoGAF member “darkwings”) — that GTA IV and Mario Galaxy failed to blow him away.
Talking about GTA IV, Ueda said that “the biggest problem with the game is the lack of innovative things in the game. The graphic style impresses, but not the base premise, which is exactly the same as the predecessors.”
Next up, Ueda discussed Mario Galaxy, saying that he’d heard Miyamoto took some inspiration for the game from Shadow of the Colossus. Ueda, of course, brought the space-traversing plumber back down to earth.
“Yes I have played it, it was hard to not to since it was rumored that Miyamoto-san was inspired by me. But I had expected more, that segment, was like the rest of the game not so fun as it could had been. I think the fans made a big deal out of nothing when they said Miyamoto had stolen from me. The thing I am critical over isn’t that they didn’t borrow anything that isn’t unique for my game, but that they didn’t make more fun stages out of it,” he said.
Ouch. More through there, if you haven’t already torn down all your Ueda posters and burned them in effigy.

Yoshida “disappointed” at Last Guardian movie leak

Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has told OPM UK (via Edge) that foul play may have been involved in the leaking of Last Guardian footage last month.
“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed,” he said, speaking at E3.
“Maybe there’s a reason the person who leaked it waited until just before E3. But the reason we didn’t show early footage was because the team wanted to feel comfortable that the vision they created could be delivered.
“Everything we showed here was from the game engine, and they’ve got to the point where they know they can make this game and can see how it’ll be completed.”
Sony released first direct-feed images of the game this morning. Hit the link for a full interview.
