Free Realms to hit PS3 during middle of 2010, likely to have Eye support

During the Q&A session following John Smedley’s keynote at GDC Austin, the SOE president informed attendees that Free Realms should land on PS3 sometime during the middle of 2010 and may also support the PS Eye.
“It’s next year sometime, toward the middle of the year,” he said. “For the PlayStation 3 version, it’s very likely that the Eye is going to be something we support.”

Free Realms officially hits the 5 million users mark

Free Realms has officially hit the five million users mark, according to SOE’s John Smedley.
Speaking during GDC Austin, Smedley revealed the number during his keynote.
The free-to-play MMO has been live since April 28, and back in July Smedley told Gamasutra that the game was close to the five million account mark then.
Looks like it finally made it.

Weekly MMO news round up – Aion Cleric Class, Second Life Avaline service, WAR’s Wild Hunt event

Loads of World of Warcraft stuff is coming out of BlizzCon 09, but you knew that already.
We also told you about the new CCP game Dust 514 this week thanks to GamesCom, but there is other stuff that went on in the world of MMOs as well.
The Avaline service is now available in Second Life, Warhammer Online is having it’s Wild Hunt Event, an Aion has revealed the Cleric class.

Free Realms hits close to the 5 million registered mark

Sony Online’s Free Realms has close to 5 million registered players and the game has only been live since April 28, according to SOE president John Smedley,
During it’s first ten days, the game hit 1 million subscribers and has steadily grown by leaps and bounds each week.
Smedley attributed the popularity and success of the game to the company’s free-to-play business model, with microtransactions.

Free Realms getting the comic treatment from DC

Sony and DC Comics are to publish a comic based on the Free Realms MMO
WildStorm will handle the distribution and J.S. Lewis, author of the Grey Griffins children’s series, will pen it.
First issue is expected July 29, and includes the “Spider Bite Sword” which is a free in-game item.

Free Realms gets guilds

SOE’s launched guilds in Free Realms, it’s 3 million user-busting micro-payment MMO.
We weren’t aware it didn’t have a guild system in the first place, so this is great news all round, as far as we’re concerned.

Free Realms beats 3 million users in 7 weeks

Hold on to your hat, granddad. SOE said this morning that teen MMO Free Realms has punched through the 3 million player mark in under seven weeks.
The publisher claimed 2 million players a month after ship.
The title released on April 28. All usage signs are pointing to a mega-hit.
The game’s a micro-transaction-based affair, with the basic game being free to play.

Free Realms users hit the 3 million mark

In just seven weeks, Sony’s Free Realms can lay claim to 3 million users.
On May 27, the MMO already had 2 million, so in the span of 2 weeks, it jumped another million.
“SOE worked diligently over the past four years to ensure that Free Realms would take the online space by storm,” said John Smedley, president of SOE.
“We are pleased to be able to provide such a vast, in-depth and, most importantly, fun world to an average of 500,000 new gamers per week.”
Wow. Just wow.

Weekly MMO news round-up E3 edition: Torchlight, LotRO, Warhammer, SWTOR

E3 was a very busy week for all involved whether they were at the show or not. Loads of games were unveiled, peripherals, and tons more stuff happened.
MMOs were there too though, and while the majority didn’t make the front page, loads of stuff pertaining to the genre happened or is going to happen.

Free Realms has pulled in 2 million users in a month

Free Realms has been out a month and already it can claim over 2 million unique users.
According to Sony, 75 percent of the players are under 17 years old, 46 percent are under 13, and a third are female.
“In less than a month, Free Realms has captivated a core player base of tween and teen gamers, while also strongly resonating with MMO gamers,” said SOE president John Smedley.
“We wanted to create a game to play with our families and are excited to have hit the mark with our intended audience.”
Earlier this month, Sony announced that within 17 days 1 million users had already flocked to the game.

Over one million users flock to Free Realms in 17 days

Sony has announced that over one million users have signed up for its MMO Free Realms during the first 17-days of launch.
In celebration, SOE is rewarding all current Free Realms players with limited edition in-game T-shirt featuring special graphics, a matching pet T-shirt for their four-legged friends, and 200 Station Cash to use toward the purchase of in-game items.
The one-millionth player gets a lifetime membership to the game, a one-of-a-kind in-game astronaut suit, and 10,000 in Station Cash.
“The excitement surrounding Free Realms, and the positive response the game has already received, is overwhelming,” said SOE’s John Smedley. “To achieve this milestone so rapidly speaks to the quality and the fun gameplay experience Free Realms offers to players of all ages.”

Free Realms launching today

As you can see from the game’s official site, SOE’s Free Realms is launching today.
The MMO’s aimed at teenagers, but that probably won’t stop some of you. You can be a goblin with a traffic cone. Or a squirrel. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Weekly MMO news round-up: EQII Brewday, adult Second Life content, no MMO for Zork

This week wasn’t too eventful in the way of MMO news, other than Warhammer consolidating server populations and luring gamers back with some goodies. But we already touched on that, it’s, like, old.
Today, news reached us that Second Life is trying to deal with all of the adult content in the game, Zork is no longer going to be an MMO, and EverQuest II players are currently inebriated with Brewday. Who wouldn’t look forward to Brewday?

Free Realms to launch in early April

SOE MMO Free Realms will launch in early April, Eurogamer reports.
The news comes from a press event in London today.
The beta test will begin very soon – within “a couple of weeks”, according to associate art director Sebastian Strzalkowski.
The game’s aimed at 10-14 year-olds, but when did that stop anyone?

Free Realms PS3 still TBD, says SOE
Sony Online Entertainment has confirmed to IGN that family-friendly MMO, Free Realms, is yet to be dated for PS3.
The confirmation came after an ESRB listing revealed a Q2 release date for PC, but nothing for PS3.
SOE said that a PlayStation 3 version is still planned, but could no offer nothing more specific than that.
