Hirai: Firmware 2.40 retraction “shouldn’t have happened”
Speaking to Edge, PlayStation boss Kaz Hirai said that issuing PS3 Firmware 2.40 with a fault then pulling it back in for fixing is something the Sony should have avoided. We kind of worked that one out by ourselves, to be honest.
“My personal reaction is that shouldn’t have happened,” he said. “I made sure that my feelings were felt.
“We were able to identify the issue very quickly; we pulled it as quickly as we could, and for those consumers whose consoles froze on the XMB we are dealing with them on an individual basis and dealing with the firmware and getting it back to them as quickly as possible. I’d like to think that we got in front of it, but quite honestly it’s something that shouldn’t have happened.
“On the other hand we do a lot of these and this kind of thing is very rare, and that’s because of the extensive testing we do before any of these firmware upgrades do go out.”

We’re still working on 2.40, says SCEA
Speaking to Loot-Ninja, SCEA’s Jeff Rubenstein has confirmed that work is still ongoing on Firmware 2.40.
“We’re still examining the cause of the problem,” he said. “We’ll announce as soon as we are ready to resume the system version update.”
Firmware 2.40, the PS3 software that adds in-game XMB and various other anticipated features to the console, was pulled after being available for less than a day after various complaints of system lock-ups.
Hopefully we’ll get more on this during UK working hours today.

2K and Insomniac add themselves to the no trophies list
Insomniac and 2K have added themselves to the list of developers shy on adding retroactive Trophy support, saying that neither Ratchet and Clank: ToD and Resistance: FoM will be getting patches.
Earlier today, Infinity Ward said that there would be no Trophies for CoD4.
Thanks PS3F.

SCEE: Super Stardust HD Team Expansion patch removed as part of 2.40 pull
SCEE just told us that the Super Stardust HD Team Expansion is still available for download from its servers, but you won’t be able to access any Trophy functionality unless you’ve already installed Firmware 2.40.
“SuperStardust HD and the Expansion Pack are still on the store and available for download,” a rep told VG247. “However the patch that is required to enable Trophies is part of the 2.40 update. So, people can still download and play the game now, but they will not be able to access Trophies without the 2.40 firmware update.”
As you should all know by now, Sony pulled Firmware 2.40 last night after various reports of system lock-ups.

SCEE on 2.40: “We’ll keep you updated as to when we expect the firmware to go back up”
SCEE’s responded to a comment request on the status of the now-pulled Firmware 2.40 update by saying that it has nothing to add to the statement already made by SCEA’s Patrick Seybold on the US PS blog.
“We’ll keep you updated as to when we expect the firmware to go back up,” a UK rep told VG247.
SCEA took the decision to remove 2.40 from the PS3 update servers last night after myriad reports of system lock-ups.

SCEA confirms Firmware 2.40 status – it’s down, but SCEA working “diligently” on problem
Update: SCEE’s made a statement here.
SCEA comms man Patrick Seybold has confirmed on the US PS blog that PS3 Firmware 2.40 has been removed from the company’s servers after receiving a “low volume” of complaints regarding installation. The complaint being that the update “bricked” people’s consoles.
“As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline,” said Seybold. “We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3.
“While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.”
Threads on the official boards began popping up yesterday afternoon saying that installation of the software was literally breaking some customers’ PS3s.
SCEA took the decision to remove 2.40 from its servers late last night.
Expect more on this later today.

Sony takes a jab at Xbox Live’s new delisting policy
In an interview with Next-Gen, Sony ‘s Eric Lempel found time to criticise Microsoft’s newly-formed policy of dropping old and unpopular Xbox Live Arcade titles.
“While naturally we only want to keep quality titles on the network we do have room for a lot of them,” he noted. “I think if I look over at the competitors’ UI they may have some issues just displaying content, and scrolling up and down lists isn’t the easiest way to find things.”
In addition, Lempel reiterated Sony’s promise that PSN will never charge a subscription fee, come hell or high game prices. But then, he didn’t even mention Qore.
Hit the link for the full interview. There’s a lot in there on the Firmware 2.40 release, so it’s well worth a read.
