Next Final Fantasy XIII game to be announced at anniversary event
This week’s Famitsu, via Andriasang, has a few more slim details regarding a promised announcement at a Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary event. Producer Yoshinori Kitase said Square Enix will announce a new title in the Final Fantasy XIII series. The new game, if that’s what it is, has just gone into production, and is being called “Lightning Saga” until the official title is released on September 1. Good news for fans of FFXIII-2, less so for those hoping to hear something Versus XIII.

Final Fantasy XIII announcements expected September 1
Square Enix has detailed its plans for a three day Final Fantasy 25th anniversary event, and according to Andriasang, will give a presentation on the future of the Final Fantasy XIII “project”. It’s not entirely clear what this means although there won’t be any more DLC for Final Fantasy XIII-2 – so we may be graced with a XIII-3, if domain names are anything to go by. But wait, there’s more – maybe the publisher will finally give us some hope for the long-delayed Final Fantasy Versus XIII, or a sequel to Type-0, both once touted as part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis sequence. The FFXIII presentation takes place on September 1.

Final Fantasy XIII-3 not on the cards despite domain registration
Speaking in a podcast, Square Enix public relations officer Akio Ofuji has explained a Final Fantasy XIII-3 domain registration as a defensive measure. According to Andriasang‘s translation, the registration was made by the US office, and Japanese staff weren’t aware about it until the story was picked up by press. Final Fantasy XIII-2 is due in Japan this month, with a Western release early next year on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Final Fantasy XIII-3 domain registered by Square Enix
Square Enix has registered a domain called FinalFanasyXIII-3.com. As noted by Joystiq, Corporation Service Company was who signed the domain, but its done domain registrations before for the publisher. XIII-2 was first uncovered before its formal announcement via a domain registration back in January. You probably should’t read too much into this, though: it’s probably a bit of safekeeping from domain squatters by Square.
FFXIII-2 launches in January for PS3 and 360.
