Moore: PES is in FIFA’s “rear view mirror”

fifa083

EA Sports president Peter Moore told Eurogamer last week that there’s “distance” between the quality of FIFA PES.

The Konami game is now in EA’s “rear view mirror,” said the exec.

Moore, added that he’s demanding a Metacritic rating of 90 for this year’s version, up from the 87 accrued by FIFA 09.

“I want 90,” he said. “It’s a challenge, and as I said in the presentation, it’s not easy with sports games to continue to raise the bar every single year – and it’s half tongue-in-cheek as I know how difficult it is.”

The stats group claimed the top five sellers in the UK, US and Japan didn’t include the game, instead pointing to Mario Kart, Wii Fit, GTA IV, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and CoD: World at War as the main titles in 2008.

Brown also claimed that Need for Speed Undercover had sold 5.2 million copies.

And the reason there’s no Wales in FIFA 09 is…

daffodils.jpg

In the words of an EA rep this morning:

“We were unable to secure the official Wales license.”

It popped up overnight that Wales isn’t included in FIFA 09, something Welsh fans are getting quite miffed about. Was Welsh football playing hard to get, or something?

We’ve left a voicemail with EA to clarify the situation, so hopefully we’ll get something more later today.

FIFA 09 doesn’t include Welsh team, man is angry

welshflag.jpg

According to this Wales Online piece, there is no Welsh football team in FIFA 09. Rather obviously, some Welsh people are a bit pissed off about it.

“In all seriousness you have to wonder how we are not in the game and yet New Zealand are,” said punter Noel Davies.

“In earlier versions of the game they used to have a Wales team. I imagine the market for this game in the UK is huge, so to ignore Wales is ridiculous. There are enough gaming members of the public in Wales. I find it really insulting.”

Baffling. Patch it, EA. Cymru am byth.

FIFA 09 hits 1 million in five weeks

fifa083.jpg

According to this MCV story, FIFA 09 has broken the 1 million sales barrier in the UK after only five weeks on sale.

“We are delighted with the success of FIFA 09,” said Dan Holman, marketing manager for EA Sports.

“We have continued to listen to gamers and football fans and the result has been the fastest-selling FIFA game in franchise history.

“To sell in excess of one million copies in five weeks, beating our previous best by one month is incredible and the development team at EA Canada deserves a lot of credit for delivering the best football game ever.”

The news means the franchise has now sold more than 10 million units in Britain in the past five years.

PES 09 looks destined to score lower than FIFA 09

fifa084.jpg

EA will probably already be soaked in champagne, covered in streamers and pushing for the “wrong hole” with the secretary in the cleaning cupboard: it looks as though FIFA 09 is going to beat PES 09 at review.

It’s probably going to be a close thing, but the games on Metacritic seems staggered in the opposite direction to normal, with the PS3 version of FIFA on 87 with most reviews in, and PES on 86 after the first – usually the most positive – reviews now in place.

Eurogamer’s just scored PES a 7/10 compared to its 8/10 FIFA review, a fact that’s likely to snap a small part of the internet, especially in Europe.

Keep an eye on that Metacritic PES score, football franchise fight fans.

FIFA 09 sells 1.2 million in Europe in a week

fifa083.jpg

EA’s confirmed that FIFA 09 has become the fastest selling game in the series, with 1.2 million units sold in Europe in only a week at retail.

“FIFA 09’s great kick off is a testament to our loyal fans across Europe who simply can’t wait to get their hands on the game,” said EA Sports boss Peter Moore.

“FIFA 09 is EA’s best football offering to date featuring game modes such as Be A Pro: Seasons, 10 vs. 10 Online Team Play, FIFA 09 Clubs and the adidas Live Season service. This is our fastest selling FIFA game of all time and it’s rewarding to see the game so high on the list of must-have titles this holiday.”

It’s out in the US on October 14. Press release after the drop.

FIFA team talks Be A Pro

fifa089.jpg

There’s a video on Kotaku of the FIFA 09 team outlining the game’s Be A Pro mode, and it all looks very good, to be fair. The idea is that you take a player through his career, the goal of which is to become a “national legend.”

Just a shame it’s football, really. Take a look.
