Square Enix still working on post-Final Fantasy XI MMO

ffxi2

The public has been aware of a “post-Final Fantasy XI MMO” for quite some time now, and while little to no news has been heard about it, there’s no need to fret. Square Enix is still working on it.

Speaking to investors, boss Yoichi Wada said that when FFXI starts to slow down, the company needs to start the transition phase to Square’s next major MMO.

“The question is where do we go from here, and we are currently developing a post-FFXI flagship title”, he said.

No word on whether this is another Final Fantasy or not, but “flagship” sounds like a meatier form of MMO than a free-to-play casual encounter.

Square pulls back time it takes to kill FFXI mega-bosses

ffxi3.jpg

Following news that a Final Fantasy XI guild had to back out of a battle with game boss Pandemonium Warden after 18 hours and physical sickness from players, Square Enix has admitted the challenge may be a little overboard.

“Included in the version update scheduled for early September will be modifications to the degree of difficulty of Pandemonium Warden (and associated pets), Absolute Virtue (and associated pets), and Jailer of Love,” said the company on the official FFXI site.

“The aim of these changes is to create battles where a decisive outcome may be reached within a shorter period of time.”

While sensible, we can’t help being a little disappointed. Are you lamenting the climb down? Are you harder than hardcore? Email us and whinge.

Thanks, Kotaku.

US police fail MMO crime victim

Man with hat plays FFXI for four years. Man with hat gets 75 million Gil’s worth of items nicked by mate. Gil is worth $3,800, man says. Calls police. Police won’t help because they think money from games isn’t worth money in real life. Oh noes, says lawyer. Big heap terrible.

“What happened here is somebody stole almost $4,000 and got away cold,” said Joshua Fairfield, an associate professor of law at Washington and Lee University in Virginia. “This is just a matter of zeros. The first time IBM loses $10 million, we’re going to see some police action.”

End of.
