ESA report: 58% of US’ers are gamers, 31% are ladies, parents taking more interest

The ESA has released a report which states that 31% of video game players are adult women, and 17 year old boys make up only 19%. This makes women 45% of the entire game playing population and 46% of the time they are the most frequent game purchasers.

ESA Nite to Unite raised over $800K for ten worthy causes

The Entertainment Software Association raised $822,000 at its Nite to Unite event this year, Destructoid reports. The annual black tie charity gala is in its 15th year and has raised over $12 million since launch. Beneficiaries for 2013 include the Federation of American Scientists, Parents’ Choice Foundation, Smithsonian American Art Museum and ThanksUSA. The event is mainly attended by industry insiders; Gabe Newell was inducted into its honouree ranks this year.

ESA forks out $90K for game related studies

The Electronic Software Association has chosen 30 US students to receive a $3,000 grant, Destructoid reports. The mini-scholarship go to those studying a gaming-related discipline in the 2012-2013 academic year, and have been snaffled by students in computer science, animation, programming, graphic design and software engineering, among others. EA, ESA, Institute of Play creating educational games via new non-profit GLASS Lab

EA, the ESA, and Institute of Play have joined forces to create GLASS Lab, a non-profit studio, which will create educational games for students. Funding for GLASS Lab in the sum of $10.3 million in grants, was awarded directly to the incentive from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The funding will allow GLASS Lab create new titles, and modify existing ones to help children learn skills which local and state school districts deem critical. Students will learn spatial reasoning skills, systems thinking, and other special skills which will help them prepare for college and, subsequently, a better career. GLASS Lab plans to make the titles available to students and schools for little or no cost. Thanks, Gamasutra.

ESA – E3 2013 may not be held in LA due to proposed stadium construction

ESA president Michael Gallagher has told the LA Times E3 may leave Los Angeles in 2013 if certain issues are not resolved. According to Gallagher, the trade body is prepared to “go elsewhere” should discussions with officials – which are ongoing – fall through. The issue at hand is the construction of the proposed Farmers Field stadium, which see the demolition of the West Hall of the LA Convention Center impacting admission to and set up of E3. Cities such as San Francisco, New York, Chicago and New Orleans are candidates should E3 be held elsewhere. Atlanta, where E3 was originally held, wasn’t mentioned as a possibility in the LA Times piece.
