Interview – Deus Ex: Human Revolution’s David Anfossi

For years, Deus Ex fans clamored for a sequel. And then they got one, and they didn’t like it all that much. So, what do you put in your pamphlet to re-hook those who renounced their faith and left the Church of Denton? Simple: a whole heaping helping of what they want to hear.
Based on what we’ve seen of Human Revolution so far, that’s definitely not a bad thing. The game’s shaping up to be the sequel fans have pined for ever since they were introduced to the first game’s mix of equal parts technology, intrigue, and trenchcoats.
But there’s still plenty more digging to be done, so we sat down with producer David Anfossi and quizzed him about how much pressure the team’s under to live up to Deus Ex’s legacy, the relationship between the game’s shooter and RPG sides, faithful series reboots versus those that stray off the beaten path, and plenty more. See it all after the break.

Eidos pull a Radiohead for Championship Manager 2010, pay what you like for it
Eidos have announced that you can buy Championship Manager 2010 from whatever price you like, from as little as 1p when it releases on September 10.
The scheme is mostly similar to what Radiohead did when they gave away their album, In Rainbows, back in October 2007: allowing people to pick their own price for the album.
However, unlike the Thom Yorke army, there is a minimum fee for delivering the game and the price you decide to give the game. This is the first time something like this has happened in the games industry.
More info here.
Thanks, Suikoden Fan.

Just Cause: The Movie – why not?

Parachuting, shooting, and parachute-shooting? Sounds like it’d make a decent popcorn flick to us. Adrian Askarieh thinks so too, which is why he recently acquired the rights for a Just Cause movie.
“Hitman was a very successful movie for Fox, and I wanted to find a similar project in terms of its genre, international appeal and ability to do for a price, but do it independently in order to maximize the creative and financial upside that a project like this could generate,” Askarieh told Variety.
Previously, Askarieh teamed up with Eidos to roll out the red carpet for Hitman and Kayne and Lynch’s silver screen debuts.

Batman: Arkham Asylum baddy profiles look wicked

Joystiq just posted a literal rogues’ gallery of villainous screenshots, profiles, and concept art from Batman: Arkham Asylum. Honestly, it all looks fantastic.
Click the link to learn about all the costumed nutcases you’ll encounter in Arkham Asylum. After all, you’ve at least got to be on a first name basis with someone before you can punch them in the face. It’s proper etiquette.

Eidos to remain mostly independent under Square Enix

Those of you who were afraid Square Enix would just convert Eidos over into another farm for effeminate young men — and then destroy that farm, giving the lads reason to journey around the world — can rest easy now, as the Japanese giant recently told GamesIndustry.biz that it doesn’t plan on giving Eidos much of a makeover following its acquisition.
“I felt that Eidos was a very good fit in terms of sharing the same culture and sharing the same foundation for the business,” Square Enix president and CEO Yoichi Wada said. “When I say ‘sharing the culture’ that includes the personality of the top management of the company, and the atmosphere in the studios.”
Current Eidos CEO Phil Rogers will keep his captain’s hat, and many other key staff members will continue in their current positions as well.
All Eidos franchises will also be free from Square Enix’s prying hand.
Looks like everybody wins. Check out the rest through the link.

Conan trailer looking peachy for May launch
Eidos has released a new movie from upcoming Funcom MMO Age of Conan – Hyborian Adventures, showing the game’s borderlands region. It’s all looking just swell, and probably worth the wait: the game’s been delayed on numerous occasions. A release date of May 20 is now set in stone, as you’ll see at the end of the trailer, and a simultaneous launch in the UK, France, Germany, Spain and the US is planned.

Gameplay first, not Lara: Tomb Raider producer
Eidos is focussing on Tomb Raider’s gameplay first and foremost, and not gaming’s first lady, Tomb Raider Underworld senior producer Sarah Van Rompaey said in this interview.
“We have to keep gameplay fresh as opposed to Lara,” she said. “Being able to utilise the power of next gen hardware means that we can do a lot more than previously possible, this extends to what you as a player are able to do with Lara in terms of movement and your interactivity with the environment. The environments can also be built in a much grander scale.”
But Lara, obviously, hasn’t gone without a make-over since Legend.
“Lara also looks different,” Van Rompaey added. “The goal was to make Lara feel three dimensional in the way that she looks, behaves and also how she looks within the world she’s operating in. She’s got new facial expressions, cloth movement, hair movement and superfine detail on clothing, expressions. Her fluid movement set has also been expanded significantly.”
Shots of Underworld released today are absolutely gobsmacking. Journalists who saw the game in London last week were seriously knocked out by it, so keep a very close eye on this.

Conan gets communal in Spain
Funcom’s launched its Spanish community boards for Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, the long-delayed MMO which now has an official European release date of May 20. American, UK, French and German versions will launch simultaneously.
“Online games are increasing in popularity, and there is no doubt that Spain is an important and a very exciting market to operate in,” said Funcom chief Trond Arne Aas. “That is why we are looking so much forward to releasing the game in Spain simultaneously with the other localized versions, and as such it is tremendously important for us to cater to the growing Age of Conan community in Spain.”

Hi-res Tomb Raider Underworld shots
As we said yesterday, this is looking tres awesome. CVG’s got a set of HD screens of Tomb Raider Underworld from Eidos, showing off acrobatics, levels, hanging off cliffs and loads more. There are good close-ups of the new Lara model and even some concept art. Take a look.
Update: CVG now appears to have pulled the shots and replaced them with a preview. Word on the street is there was a 5pm embargo on both the text and the shots, although the NDA covering all this stuff just says “February 1″. Expect more Eidos-related jiggery pokery throughout the day.
Update 2: EG’s gone live with its written TRU content. Big preview from Ellie there, who managed to mention the word “tits” four times.

Tomb Raider Underworld details and shots
Text here, shots here. Looks as though IGN got a good look at Lara’s latest, which has been tipped by UK journos as one of the best games on current gen hardware. Underworld, according to the game’s creative director, Eric Lindstrom, is about “the core elements of Tomb Raider” and translating “them into next-generation gameplay.”
This is going to be very cool. One to watch. Be sure to take a look at that preview.

More Just Cause 2 details and screens
Loads more stuff on Eidos’s Just Cause 2 here, in a preview taken from PSW. Shots here. The text contains news that the game’s mission structure has been completely revamped, with the concept of side missions being dumped completely. This presented something of a learning curve, apparently.
“From a design perspective, it was quite a challenge to design the new mission structure since we wanted to get that exactly right,” said lead designer Peter Johansson of developer Avalanche Studios. “We wanted to make sure that the game world is filled with things to do and gives you enough freedom to play the missions you choose and approach them in any way you want.”
There’s no release date for this yet other than “2008″.

Just Cause 2 to include flyable Boeing 747
Good gravy. According to this, you’ll be able to fly a jumbo jet in Just Cause 2. Also, you’ll get “better enemy AI, a targeting system similar to Crackdown’s aim-at-specific-body-parts one, better vehicle handling, better vehicles (including a…Boeing 747), less ‘dead space’ on the game’s maps and Rico’s grappling hook is now a permanent addition to your arsenal”. Zowee.
These are pretty much the first details seen on the sequel to Eidos’s free-roaming action adventure, and the 747 alone should keep you interested. Let’s hope it doesn’t suffer from the fate of the original and stumble at the final hurdle.

Lara wins best mobile action game from Spike
Every cloud has a silver lining, right? Despite Eidos going through all sorts of traumas in the past few weeks, Tomb Raider: Legend has been awarded the best mobile action game at America’s Spike Video Game Awards. Spike, for those unaware, is an MTV division, which makes that lining shine all the brighter.
“The 3D mobile version of Tomb Raider: Legend adds to the accomplishment of a growing brand on mobile and mirrors the success of a brand which has enthralled gamers for ten years and is still one of the best selling videogame franchises of all time, with over 32 million copies sold,” said an Eidos press release.

There must be more to Gerstmann “firing”, says EGM editor
EGM editor Dan Hsu (who recently spoke out about untoward treatment towards his magazine from Ubisoft, “Sony’s sport department” and Midway) has reached the common sense conclusion that there was more to the Jeff Gerstmann “sacking” from Gamespot than meets the eye.
“I’d be really surprised if what everyone thinks happened really happened,” he said, speaking in a GameTrailers Bonus Round interview (see below). “Because Eidos complaining happens all the time. That’s pretty normal… If they threaten to pull advertising, then it’s Gamespot’s duty for management to protect its employees and defend its editorial integrity. Jeff Gerstmann’s been there for so long, I find it really hard to believe that even if there’s new management… that it’s like, ‘You’re gone,’ and not think about all the ramifications of how’s it going to affect morale, how’s it going to affect how we look to our readers and our editorial integrity; there’s a lot of consequences from that. So I kind of feel there must be more to the story that we’re not hearing.”
Gerstmann left Gamespot last November, apparently due to friction over a 6/10 score for Eidos’s Kane & Lynch and the publisher’s subsequent threat to pull a large advertising campaign.
“The buzz seems to imply that he got fired for a negative review, but I don’t know,” said Hsu. “Maybe he was sleeping with the boss’s wife, or something… I think very few people know the full story.”
