Interview: StarCraft II’s Dustin Browder on the beta, GDC, and finally going home

Dustin Browder, StarCraft II’s lead designer, wants to go home. He’s a tired bunny. He’s been working on a game that’s been in development since 2003 and finally, thankfully, the end is in sight: StarCraft II is gearing to launch in the first half of this year.
At least Dustin hopes so. The developer was kind enough to break off a Hard difficulty play-through last night to give us 20 minutes of his time on the phone, and talked about the monster RTS’s ongoing beta, what’s going on with Battle.net 2.0, StarCraft II’s day one patch and tons more.

StarCraft II has planned trial versions, says Blizzard
Blizzard will release “trial versions” of StarCraft II, Blizzard’s confirmed, although you’ll have to wait until the game itself’s shipped to be able to try before you buy.
“We’ve got lots of different SKUs planned,” said lead game designer Dustin Browder, speaking at Blizzard’s HQ on a recent press trip.
“I don’t even know what they all are right now, but there are trial versions planned, and all kinds of stuff.”
Added design boss Rob Pardo: “We’ll do those after release, though. We always do those after release. ”
The sequel’s planned for a 2010 launch.
We got to play StarCraft II’s single-player component in California last month. Impressions here, Rob Pardo interview here, Campaign screens here.

StarCraft II has online verification, but Battle.net connection not necessary for single-play
StarCraft II will require both an online verification check and a Battle.net account to play, Blizzard’s confirmed to VG247.
“You need to connect once to install the game,” said lead game designer Dustin Browder, speaking at Blizzard’s HQ on a recent press trip.
Offline single-play is allowed, however.
“After that you don’t need to be connected,” added the developer.
Being connected to Battle.net is obviously the preferred way of playing the game.
“If you want access to your Achievements, and your Friends List, and all the good stuff that goes with it, you need to be connected,” said Browder.
“But if you don’t care about that stuff, then you’re free to play offline.”
StarCraft II will release next year.

New Battle.net is “up in the air”

From comments made to Shacknews by StarCraft II lead designer Dustin Browder, it sounds as though the next version of Battle.net isn’t exactly imminent.
“I can’t tell you a whole lot because in reality, anything I say might be a lie,” said the developer.
“We’re still working on it, and it’s kind of up in the air. I kind of wish it wasn’t, but it kind of is.”
Browder said the version used to show the beta build of StarCraft II to the press isn’t even the general direction planned for the final product.
“What you saw today is not where we’re going,” he said. “It’s a version that we have that has a lot of problems that we don’t like.
“It was never meant to be the final version, but we’re getting further and further away from that being close to the final version. We’re trying to do more and more stuff.”
All of which is a little disconcerting. StarCraft II and the new Battle.net were supposed to be a simultaneous released.
There’s a long interview through there.

Blizzard: Starcraft II to allow players “to get a lot closer to the gameplay experience”

Blizzard’s Dustin Browder, lead game designer on Starcraft II, no less – has told Destructoid that the team wanted to create a much stronger, single-player experience that allows the player (that’s you) to “get a lot closer to the gameplay experience” than you did in the first game. You’re going to have to expand your mind too, apparently.
“Well, what we’re trying to do is create a game that hearkens back to the legacy of the original,” he said.
“We felt the original was such a strong game that we didn’t want to run off and abandon it and do whatever. We wanted it to feel like you were coming home to a game that you knew and loved.
“At the same time, we’re trying to create all-new gameplay elements, trying to create a gameplay experience that still has as much learning for you as the original StarCraft and the original Brood War did.
“You feel like you have to expand your mind, try new stuff; you get a chance to be creative, [and] you might be able to discover something no one’s ever seen before, which is clearly not as likely these days with StarCraft and Brood War,” he went on.
“We want to create something that lets players get a lot closer to the gameplay experience, get a lot deeper into the characters, and really gets to be a 21st-century look at storytelling in the StarCraft universe, which a lot of our competitors have been doing – really great stories.
“We wanted to do something that we felt matched our quality level and was really out there doing some awesome stuff.”
The gaming internet has published it’s Starcraft II previews this morning and we’ve picked a couple out for you have a look at: Eurogamer (which has some new screens too) and IGN.
Fill your boots.
