Nintendo: Next Metroid Prime might land on the DS

Metroid: The Other M may be hogging all the series’ face time right now, but Prime isn’t ready for the retirement home just yet. Speaking with ONM, Nintendo’s Kensuke Tanabe indicated that Metroid Prime’s next foray might be a return trip to the Nintendo DS.
“We are always planning to make new games in the Metroid Prime series. Depending on the timing and the situation, we cannot deny the possibility of realising it on DS or DSi,” he said.
Well gee, that’s a funny way of saying “new 2D Metroid on the DS.” That is what he meant, right?

Rumor: Nintendo to release new DSi with bigger screens

Is it time for another Nintendo DS iteration already? Fortunately for our wallets, the answer appears to be “no” – for now, anyway. However, according to a Nikkei Shimbun report obtained by Wired’s GameLife blog, Nintendo is touching up the DSi in a few crucial areas.
If the report is to be believed, Nintendo’s set to release a DSi with 4″ screens – a nice chunk of added real estate over the current model’s 3.25″. It’s supposedly coming out this year.
Can you guess what Nintendo said when asked about this hardware revision? “We don’t respond to rumors.” Oh Nintendo, you crazy kook – what won’t you say?

Rumor: DSi-only games coming to stores this fall

Kotaku‘s reporting that DSi-specific games will be out in the wild this fall.
According to the site’s “sources,” DSi-only boxes will be visually distinct, so as to ward off poor, neglected DS Lite owners.
DSi-exclusive games were announced earlier this year. However, specifics — such as a game titles and a release window — weren’t discussed.
Kotaku contacted Nintendo for comment, but Nintendo basically whistled and pretended not to hear. Hopefully we’ll find out more soon.

DSi Facebook update also fights piracy

Like a mild-mannered Joe Everyman who suits up and fights crime by the moonlight, the recent Nintendo DSi Facebook Connect update does more than advertised. In addition to plastering Facebook with embarassing snapshots of you and your friends, it renders many DS flashcarts useless, reports MCV.
iPlayer, EZVi, and AK2I are among those thwarted by the Facebook-clad crusader, meaning that illegally downloaded games will no longer function in conjunction with them.
There ya go, Yves. Nintendo’s got your back.

Non-DSicrimination: NPD not separating DS and DSi sales in monthly report

NPDs? What about ‘em? They’re basically our gods.
Anyway, after all the hubbub surrounding Nintendo’s recent DSi launch, Ars Technica contacted the NPD group to find out whether or not gaming’s premiere abacus would be giving DSi sales their own space on its monthly report. The answer: Nuh-uh.
Well, mostly.
According to the NPD Group’s David Riley, separated data won’t be passed out to the press, but NPD clients will be allowed to witness the beginning of the DSi’s glorious conquest. Even money-counters need money, after all.
Guess we’ll just have to hope that Nintendo spills the beans in a moment of success-intoxicated honesty. Stranger things have happened.

GDC: Nintendo working on “DSi-enhanced” game cards with DSi-specific features

DSi, you definitely got your great, great grandpappy‘s genes.
Speaking during his “Inspiration Behind Nintendo DSi Development” GDC talk, project leader of the Nintendo DSi Hardware group Masato Kuwahara said that Nintendo plans to release “Nintendo DSi-enhanced game cards,” which will hold more features than your obsolete, back-of-the-closet-bound DS Lite can handle.
“For example,” Kuwahara said, “you will use these features if you want to create textures from photographs taken with the DSi camera.”
The game carts are still in development.
Thanks, Kotaku.

GDC: Nintendo unveils WarioWare: Snapped for DSi

The DS officially has its You’re in the Movies-killer.
At today’s GDC keynote, Nintendo gave conference-goers a look at WarioWare: Snapped for the DSi.
The game requires that you line up your head and hands for the camera before catapulting you through a, er, typical WarioWare gauntlet so that it can then play back recorded footage of you playing the game after you’re done.
Sounds like the kids’ll soon have a new set of questionable tapes to innocently stumble onto. God help us all if the game has multiple save files.

GDC: Nintendo announces new Zelda for DS

Nintendo just announced a new Legend of Zelda title for the DS. It’s called Spirit Tracks, and will be out later this year!
A quick video showed Link on a train “conducting it,” according to our lady on the scene, and then him fighting a monster thing “like an owl.”
There was nothing else shown. We’ll have plenty more soon, with any luck.

Nintendo president thinks DSi downloads will drive system sales
Oh sure, you’ll sneak a DSi into your stringent, economy-friendly budget because your DS Lite’s obsolete insides can’t handle a spicy slice of DLC, but you’re probably some form of “hardcore” gamer. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, though – he believes that every member of your family pines for two full screens of their own. The greedy, disgusting pigs.
The DSi, Iwata explained in an interview with Yomiuri Shimbun (via Wired), by virtue of its ability to download games, can be “customized for the individual.” Thus, he hopes to “create a trend in which each family member will have his or her own DSi with their favorite software installed.”
Certainly, downloads are the way of the future, but isn’t Nintendo’s holy writ able to be stored on an SD card after being downloaded to the DSi? Couldn’t family members simply supply their own SD cards while gathered around a communal DSi?
We fear we’ve said too much.
