Quakecon – No “major announcements” in press conf, says Willits
There will be no “major announcements” in tonight’s Quakecon keynote, id super-boss Tim Willits said at the Texan event today.
The exec said that the press conference will instead focus on updates for already-announced games.
And that means no DOOM 4 for you, Ringo.
Willits dropped the tidbits in an overheard press room chat. The walls have ears, Tim.
We’ll be liveblogging Quakecon’s opening speech from 9.30pm BST tonight. Get more details on that here.

DOOM, Rage and Bethesda games snapped on Quakecon stage
We’ve received the first image of the Quakecon stage as it’s being set up, and it looks as though we may be getting a look at something DOOM-related tonight.
The DOOM logo’s on the banners at the side of the main stage for today’s event, as are Brink, Fallout 3, Rage, Wolfenstein, QuakeLive and Rage.
Looks like Quakecon isn’t so much about Quake any more.
We’ll be liveblogging both the main conference and the John Carmack presser this evening, kicking off at 3.30pm Texas time.

id will show “new stuff” at E3 this year

id Software’s Todd Hollenshead had told Gamespot that the firm will show off “new stuff” at E3 this year.
“I expect that we’ll have some new stuff at E3 that we haven’t announced yet, along with Wolfenstein and other known projects,” said Hollenshead.
It’s unknown whether or not id will demo Rage and its next Doom game.
“I’ll leave that as a tease,” Hollenshead added.
Wolfenstein is expected sometime this summer for PC, 360 and PS3.

John Carmack surprised id with Wolfenstein for iPhone

John Carmack had Wolfenstein 3D all ready for the iPhone a week before anyone knew a thing about it, id bossman Todd Hollenshead has told VentureBeat.
The public found when word hit that an unlocked iPhone could visit the company website and take a look at the game.
“I got off the plane and all hell was breaking loose because someone wrote about how you could take a jail-broken iPhone and go to a secret web site to get Wolfenstein 3D Classic for free,” he said.
“It was a secret page on ID’s web site. It was really source code that John Carmack had staged to put the game up on the Apple App Store.
“One programmer speculated that search programs will do random searches on web sites until they find something. They found it, it got linked to.
“Then everybody wanted to download the game for free. But you couldn’t do that. It was staged to go up on the Apple App Store.
“We got it up, and we’re selling it for $4.99.”
Apparently an ID Classics label will soon be up on the App Store, along with the original Doom.

Ex-Midway guys: Unreal Engine 3 tinkering put Midway in “spiral of doom”
To be frank, things aren’t looking so hot for Midway. But according to Variety, at least now we have something to blame: Unreal Engine 3.
“The mistake we made was, instead of just taking the base Unreal 3 engine that Gears of War was made on and building games off of that, we let our tech and product development guys try to really modify the engine to add all these diff things,” an ex-Midway employee said.
“It was a ton of new technology which they just weren’t capable of doing. It put all the games way behind schedule.”
And thus, Midway was forced to grab a few hundred shovels and dig itself into the hole in which it now resides.
“The delays of next-gen titles pushed them into a window where money became very tight for the company,” said former CMO Steve Allison.
“When that happens decision-making can become focused around not always what is best for each title, but how to fix cash flow issues. This is a spiral of doom in videogame publishing because you can’t ship compromised titles against the exceptional quality level of competition that is on the shelves.”
Hopefully, we won’t be getting the full-disclosure treatment from any more “former” employees, since we imagine Midway would prefer to keep those they currently have. Good luck, everyone.
